  • This wasn't a blockbuster, but certainly was a well-integrated, delicious classic, old-style Cali Cab. Perhaps it was lacking a bit of sweet fruit, but what was there was nicely balanced by the acidity and that Rutherford dust. If only California still made wines like this.

  • Foil cap oxidized and fill is just below the shoulder. Purchased from LastBottle with appropriate caveats. Opened 20 minutes ahead of time. Pure, classic Napa cab aromas, dominated by cedar. Palate is a mixed bag, with some oxidation and some pruniness, but the underlying fruit shows through and shows well. Flavors of spicy plum, cassis and saddle. Lingering finish.

At the one hour mark, the sweetness has receded and the flavors have become more integrated. There is a hint of Rutherford "dust" and the flavors have become less pruny. It is clearly past its prime, but still remarkably spry for such an oldster. And it is California Cabernet the way I remember it back when I liked it. For that I would be quite willing to make allowances but with this bottle at least, I don't have to.

  • Purchased as an experiment. This one turned out well.
Nose of old damp cedar. Color is very much alive; garnet-red with hints of crimson on the edges. Maybe some brown on the very edge- maybe. Palate shows some red fruits of bing cherries and red raspberries. Hints of forest floor, old leather and soy. I was actually shocked how well this drank. The nose did not promise much but it did deliver nonetheless. After about 30 minutes this was crescendo-ing to the fullest it would ever be again in this world. A light weight mouthfeel with some elegance and poise. Not being one for 'old' wines, I can report: This did not suck.

  • Consumed from magnum at the home of Jim and Dana Irwin. Magnum brought from my personal cellar (my last bottle of this wine in any format). Immediately upon decanting, the wine show intense plum, red cherry, coffee, cocoa and cigar box. Medium-bodied on the palate, with similar fruit-filled but complex flavors. The evolution is equally as good as the attack, and leads to a long, smooth finish. This wine has never disappointed. Bravo!
