(Yarra Yering Dry Red #1) Yarra Yering Dear Friends, More cellared classics from Yarra Yering - amazing wines that deserve the utmost respect and consideration. If you cellar red wine and can defer your gratification, the Dry Red #1 should make your short list as it morphs into something nearly unexplainable (see my notes on the web site regarding the 1990 version of this wine enjoyed with James Suckling): VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Please note: If we run out there are 3-4 cases floating around the East Coast at this price as well (I don’t know who has them). 2001 Yarra Yering Dry Red #1 Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus8080

This followed the magnificent 91 Mondavi, but it wasn't far behind. Lush ripe fruit, the oak surprisingly prominent, with a luxurious coconut quality.

Ripe, mellow, some tobacco notes. Reminded me of my 1985 clarets, though perhaps it’s a bit warmer than them. Lovely wine.

Medium intensity nose of capsicum and blackcurrant. Light to medium bodied, supple texture, high level of acidity (a high dose of tartaric acid may have been added) and some plucky tannins remain on the tongue, primarily blackcurrant flavours through the mid palate with some clove and earth notes.

It’s a nice old red but less exciting than hoped for. A touch of leather. Still marked VA (the YY style back then).
Match carefully with food. Better with white wine dishes.
