  • Unlike the previous bottle of this i tried a little while back, this bottle was in a foul mood. Brooding, surly, tight, deep dark impenetrable red still, it was very much not interested in partying at all. But structurally it was all there with a massive core of dark ripe Cabernet lurking fruit and probably a generous hunk of Malbec. Perhaps going into a late adolescence at nearly 40 yrs old!!!!. I would love to put it up against first growth Bordeaux at 50 or 60 years. In some respects it was harder to drink than the 82 Riddoch along side it. After 4 hours it had gone no where if only to confirm its annoyance at being opened and instead of giving up and partying like we often experience with old wines, it said " i told you so and now i will teach you a lesson". So be in no rush whatsoever to consume this wine . Excellent condition well cellared bottles have 25+ to go. A ripper. And fast becoming another favorite vintage of YY DR 1 close to 85 and 90.

  • Well life is tough. The wife made lasagne. I found another 4 bottles of this wine in the cellar so thought I would try it again for the second time in as many months and drink it on my own. Because I can I guess. Again another fabulous dry red 1 at nearly 40 yrs old. In honesty it's not as good as the bottle tried recently but still a cracking wine. And evolving all the time. Black raspberry earthy and sweet but a lovely briary savoury twist with a hint of cabernet leaf. The palate is also oily fat and long with some residual sweetness caught between your teeth that you keep tasting 30-40 seconds later.
This one is at its peak but superb. Bloody hell I can still taste it even after writing this note in a minute or two.

  • Followers of Yodamark, ( now up to 3 i think) know my love of YY DR1. Especially the 85. I have not had a 1982 before but i know it was a good Yarra valley vintage having had 82 Mt Mary and St Huberts and Yeringberg before. All of which are lovely wines but drink like vinegar compared to this. And comparing the 85 to this is borderline a struggle as well. This was laden with blackcurrants, sweet cedar, cassis syrup, and a dark red/purple dense brooding colour that could easily have been a big Cabernet at 10 years old, not nearly 40. Yet again Bailey Carrodus continues to send shivers up the Yarra Valley old Cabernet spine with masterful, full bodied, youthful, ethereal immortal wines. Im lost for words. Glad i have 4 more bottles. Im speechless......and thats hard for me

  • Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 - The Complete Vertical 1975 to 2006 (The Ledbury, London): Smoke, game, a bit of the farm, some curry powder, but ripe and deep, rude, but fascinating

  • Over the years the 1982 YY1 has consistently been one of the very best wines I've ever had, with its mouthwatering fruit, its energy and its weightlessness, but tonight was a bit of a let down - very ripe, chocolately fruit, a fine grainy texture, dense. I'd have guessed an exotic '82 st emilion. Actually a very nice wine burdened by our expectations.
