  • will keep this short as i have written about this wine several times. its just unreal and again last night yet another stunning bottle. In all honesty i thought it was 1 point behind other bottles with just a tad of development and a poofteenth less richness just off the pace but it is pure penny pinching and semantics and only a tosspot like me would be able to see the difference. it was the earlier bottling with the blank lead seal and good to see it is no different to second bottling with the printed seal.

Just a great wine with years ahead of it

  • well all i can say is yet another simply stunning, rich, decadent, juicy, full bodied, luscious dark berried mouthful of divine Cabernet wine from master Bailey Carrodus. As i have written before Bailey told me this would be immortal and at 35 years and a quick impromptu opening from a bottle sitting base neck or VHS , this was stunning and years to go. it got better and better, fatter and richer with more air. Problem is that is so bloody good you tend to guzzle it as your taste buds immediate crave for more like a dependent drug... words are failing me.....give it 20 more years in the cellar.. Im 51 yrs old and this wine could outlive me.

  • I remember talking to Dr Bailey Carrodus a year or so before he died about this wine. basically he told me it will be immortal. I think he is right on the money. here it is at 35 years of age and it still hasn't got anywhere near its peak. i still have several bottles an inch into the neck, must have used ripper quality corks, every time i open it i am blown away at the rich dense purple tinged colour and deep ripe plummy Cabernet fruit. Can stand tall against great 85 Bordeaux any day. and must be one of the greatest 85 Australian Cabernet's made, its better than Mt Mary, Yeringberg, Moss Wood, 707, Cyril to name a few. it remains on a slow glacial ageing pace that will outlive me i suspect. similar to the 90 and 98 which appear to be the younger brothers of this. hard to find good level bottles now but an amazing drop. Cellar for another 15-20 years yet.

  • Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 - The Complete Vertical 1975 to 2006 (The Ledbury, London): Stalky, peppery, some farmyard pong, grippy tannins, but very fresh and complex, quite enticing. [Apparently the 1985 was recalled by the winery as being sub-standard]

  • Auswine offline (Darlinghurst, Sydney): No ullage. Incredible deep deep red colour with no hint of lightening. Magnificent nose dominated by secondary aromas – cedar, tobacco, and a patina of polished leather over aged blackcurrant fruit. Rich and spicy, a full palate free of holes, powerful and yet subtle, with a long finish. Absolutely delicious, a magnificent wine from an ignored vintage. Wow!
