  • the only wine on the night that had some controversial opinions. Labelled "DRY RED" , as i think a Cabernet may not have been made that year???, it decanted as a dark deep crimson red, with a porty volatile nose masking itself with disapproving aromas and a monolithic monster facade. others were concerned this was just unbalanced and would never come together. i gave it more faith , due to the fact i have lots of old MW Cabernets and especially those from the 70's are still rich and long and drinking beautifully. I do not know what happened in 1978 or whether this was a second wine or anyway - who cares, i felt if it was to get some air into it, it would sing. Like giving an old carburettor V12 the Italian tune-up of jamming it into 2nd gear at 100kmh and flooring it until all the black carbon has been burnt off and showered the cars behind you, i knew this big old gnarly monster was going to be tamed and i felt it would purr like a kitten in time. And this is exactly what it did. after about 30 minutes the naysayers were ( quite rightly) telling Yodamark he was right and this wine really strutted it stuff. impossible to blind taste and pick as 78, it drank very much like a slightly less refined murkier version of 78 Latour. big, dense, chewy, chocolaty and with years to go, if you have bottles give it 2 hour decant then enjoy after 2030... Outclassed on the night by other wines but the competition it was up against was immense.
