At first the acidity made me think this wine was on the verge of turning to vinegar, but with the second and subsequent glasses all I can say is that this is a VERY FINE, SMOOTH WINE! Even after 50 years!

I did not have high expectations for this wine given the combination of age and average vintage. This wine is, in many ways, a tribute both to excellence in winemaking that you will find in some establishments and "old school" winemaking in Medoc. No, this wine is not trying to wrap you in jam or layers of oak or even a rich texture. The wine is certainly on the leaner side with pleasant herbal, spicy and earthy aromas, BUT it is well made and harmonious. Is anyone making wine like this today? The tannins are resolved and must have been tight years ago. Incredible accomplishment for average vintage after 49 years.....

Tasted at the Cincinnati Mondiale du Vin "cellar treasures" event. An aging fading wine that still has surprising vibrance. Very light clear color with brown/brick tint - like fall leaves. Nose of tobacco, dried flowers, and tea. Medium palate with some persistent ripe fruit, leather, and dried leaves. Pleasant acidity. Decent length. Much better than expected.

A Night to Remember - Don and Sally's 50th Wedding Anniversary (Don and Sally's Home): Spectacular. More deeply colored, still salmon to the rim, a core meniscus of vibrant red orange. Lead pencil, cedar, soft ripe warm red fruit, plums, earth, long finish, still some structure remaining. Brilliant. My third favorite of Flight #2.

Ducru-Beaucaillou 1961 to 2004 over dinner (Hawksmoor, Spitalfields, London): Served blind alongside the '57, this was warm, ripe and rich, not very big, but taut, bright and alive. I guessed '76.
