I'm admittedly charmed by this wine which, despite arguably being past its best (others thought differently), still offers a vivid, energetic, lithe redcurrant and wild raspberry fruit profile accented by wonderful aged leather, cedar, loam, and black pepper. Juicy palate but there's no doubt that the rugged and abundant tannin, perhaps a signature of the 45 vintage, persist.

The wine started with hefty acidity and a very lively colour without signs of age; the acidity decreased and the colour continued. I suggested '53 (The year of birth of my friend Loek, who served this wine) or '37 (also high in acidity). The style seemed to me Saint-Julien (I thought Gruaud). Let me explain the points; 89 points for the overall impression, one for the very lively colour and one for the fact that this wine has survived a low shoulder period; Belgian bottling

A fabulous nose with light fruit, old leather, white pepper, and an umami funkiness. Palate with light spice, metallic notes, light tannins and an overall elegance. After 30 minutes in the glass the palate began to thin and fade, taking on a tart complexion. But for the first 30 minutes this was a glorious wine. Best consumed on its own, without food.

Ducru-Beaucaillou vertical (Institute of Directors, London): Opaque still, mushroom and fruitcake nose, this too was savoury, but not very appetising - but nowhere near as bad as Linden seemed to think it was.
