  • Fairly advanced bricking; the wine was a rusty red. VA is noticeable on the nose and palate; indeed it is starting to become the predominant feature. But, especially after 30+ minutes of gentle aeration, one can also appreciate other notes -- a wee bit of fruit (cranberries, and a hint of orange), and some herbal and woodsy notes. Mostly it reminded me of an older mid-range Barolo (which I've had far more of than 40+ y.o. Burgs). For enjoyment rather than dispassionate analysis, this wine demands food -- a roast chicken and then a fairly stinky Epoisses both helped tame most of the (volatile) acidity. Clearly this wine is in decline, and I suspect this cuvée was not made with nearly as much care and attention 40 years ago as it is in recent years. Still, it has pleasure left to offer, especially to those with a soft spot for 1979 as a vintage year.

(good fill, cellar-corroded label; bottle stood up for a week; cork came out easily enough with an Ah-So + worm, as I didn't have my Durand)
