A trio of Guiraud tonight: 2009, 2010, 2011. We had them at first alone, then with « foie gras poêlé » as a starter and then at the end with dessert. The clear winner was the 2010: a classic of classics. Superb thick, almost oily mouth. Great concentration of fruits, a little acidity to keep it balanced. We were two giving it a 99 (ok maybe we were overenthusiastic and should have give it a 98 instead). One gave it a 96 and the fourth a 93. She found the little bitter orange taste not to the her liking. I thought it gave a wonderful complexity. The 2009 was also superb: 96 for me and 95-97 for everyone. It had an irresistible marmelade taste and a complex finish. The 2011 was simpler but also excellent: 94,4999 for me, 95 for the others. The three were at the beginning of their drinking window but are so good now, why wait ?

Pnp, then tasted again the next night with consistent results. Toasted coconut (especially on the nose), dried pineapple and spice. A bit short/simple to warrant a higher score, but a very enjoyable wine.

Sauternes: made by masochists, drunk by hedonists. Sign me up! For a Sauternes this is a spicy and muscular bruiser of a wine compared with the delicacy of, say, Yquem, but it’s so light on its feet and beautifully balanced despite the weight. Just starting to turn that beautiful amber that says “pleasure awaits”. Really delicious. Powerful. Intense honey and mead sweetness initially then lovely waves of acidity cleanse the palate and keep you going back for more. Very long finish, minutes. Classic botrytis profile and that lovely Seville marmalade orangeyness. Some ripe tropical fruit flavours here too, and the better for it. Excellent food wine, not easily overpowered. Feels like it’s only just getting into its stride with years ahead of it. From a very good Sauternes vintage; Suckling scored this higher than Yquem and rated it possibly the best ever from this property. Very, very good. In fact it’s time top up the glass again…

Amber-gold colour. Dried citrus, honey, dried apricot, and earthy mineral nose. Sweet and luscious palate with very good balance and length.
