  • 2018 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer

Really good. Single vineyard Clos Hauserer was planted in 1973 by Olivier Humbrecht’s father, lying between GC Hengst and the Häuserer road below (the road to the houses in reference to an old roman settlement not far away.) Similar geology to Hengst: silaceous marl. Warm in summer but the soil remains cool. Warm vintage so has that honeyed ripeness but so fresh! Rich in the house style. There’s an expectation of sweetness but that taut mineral freshness cuts beautifully and everything is in balance. Lovely classic Riesling oily/petrol nose. Lemon peel. Punches way above its weight. Drinking beautifully now and will go the distance. Fabulous QPR. Hopefully (for consumers) Alsace will remain unfashionable because it’s dynamite value right now.

  • 2021 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel

My Day 1 notes consistent with MKS83 below. Lovely nose hints at future pleasure. Not ready yet, 2-5 years at least. Thick seam of bitterness, drying tannins and maybe just a hint of greenness (vintage?) From a spotty and generally very average vintage in the Southern Rhone: this was one of the highlights. Perrin thought it a good Coudoulet and so did the critics. Some heat from the alcohol. Much to enjoy. Way more complex, long and broad than it has any right to be at this price point. This cuvée regularly over-delivers (like the Guigal CdR) and is fantastic value. Definitely a mini CNdP. Should easily last a decade or more, no rush. Give it plenty of air if trying soon.

  • 2011 Château Guiraud

Sauternes: made by masochists, drunk by hedonists. Sign me up! For a Sauternes this is a spicy and muscular bruiser of a wine compared with the delicacy of, say, Yquem, but it’s so light on its feet and beautifully balanced despite the weight. Just starting to turn that beautiful amber that says “pleasure awaits”. Really delicious. Powerful. Intense honey and mead sweetness initially then lovely waves of acidity cleanse the palate and keep you going back for more. Very long finish, minutes. Classic botrytis profile and that lovely Seville marmalade orangeyness. Some ripe tropical fruit flavours here too, and the better for it. Excellent food wine, not easily overpowered. Feels like it’s only just getting into its stride with years ahead of it. From a very good Sauternes vintage; Suckling scored this higher than Yquem and rated it possibly the best ever from this property. Very, very good. In fact it’s time top up the glass again…
