  • From 375, stood up for an hour before opening. In the glass, pale clear yellow, only the faintest hint of a shift to orange. On the nose, a petrol note that never quite cleared out, honey, and a secondary note of dried fruit (apricot?). On the palate, mandarin orange, honeysuckle, and a note of vanilla bean, with a silky, not-quite-oily texture, leading to a medium-long finish.

  • A solid Sauternes, perhaps a tiny bit too sweet for my personal taste, but squarely in the classic Sauternes flavor profile. I believe it's mature but didn't see any signs that it was near the end (or past) its drinking window. Paired with seared foie, torchon, and brioche.

  • The wine looks yellow brown colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like orange, raisin, fig, apricot, plum, banana, papaya, mango, light toast, orange blossom, peach blossom, butterscotch, honey and sherry. It tastes like raisin, fig, apricot, peach, plum, mango, papaya, light toast, vanilla, orange blossom, peach blossom, butterscotch, honey and sherry. The body is full. The wine has oily texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

  • I can’t imagine a wine acting more perfectly than this. Great mouthfeel, and ample acid to match the dried apricots and honey. I’ve had 5 vintages of Y’quem, including the 1990 13 years ago*, and none have come close to providing the complete satisfaction that this bottle delivers tonight.

Also, there is a coconut note on the nose, in case you got the impression that this only smelled and tasted like honeyed apricots.

*I understand that 2010 was too early to drink a 1990 Y’quem, but I’ve never had Y where someone didn’t say “it needs more time”. Maybe you can only drink the stuff that was produced before you were born.

This Guiraud is ready to go now, and costs about 10% what that other wine costs. Overperforms and undercharges.

  • Informal notes from phone -

Nose - honey, beeswax, dried apricot, apple
Palate - honey, dried apricot, apple
Other - gold color, long apple and pineapple finish, almost cloying, just enough acid to keep it under control, not my favorite vintage I have had but still a good choice for a reasonable price
