Semi blind tasting flight of 6. Blind for the rest of our group. 2014 DuMol Finn, 2009 Jaboulet Chapelle, 1988 Sandrone Cannubi, 1999 Tignanello, 2014 Cos d'Estournel and 2017 Penfold St Henri
Last of 3 bottles bought at an auction back in 2015 (before the hype) Smokey fruit on the nose showing age. Still dry with high acidity, a bit hollow maybe but the finish is still rather balanced and fun. Drink up. Group's no 6.

The wine was corked. Just a slight hint in the nose at the beginning that became very present over 4 hours in the decanter. However, on the palate it was not that bad, just slightly. The potential of the wine is still great and would be again on a 95 pts level, if the there would not have been the cork.

not unlike a left bank Bordeaux of similar age. Colour showing some age, orange rim, nose , very complex, leather, mocha, rich, complex, and tannins still gripping. Balance is great, even tannins are still assertive . Lovely wine

Napa 2023 - The Sequel; 8/23/2023-8/28/2023: PnP with early moldy funk that took 15 min to blow off. Mushrooms, oysters, saddle leather, dried tobacco, dried red cherry. Good for what it was, glad I had a chance to try. Not familiar with the aging curve on these but seems past peak for my palate.

Return to Italy: Pio Cesare, Gaja, Oddero, Tignanello and more (Flour Shop, Charlotte, NC) (Charlotte, NC): Slow-ox for 3 hours before serving. Complex nose of young dried cherries, leather, and tobacco. A wine displaying high quality tones and brimming with confidence. Notes of dried cherries and lightly smoked meat on the pallet. A wine with both power and finesse. Richly flavored and demonstrating great depth resolving into a long finish to red and black fruits. My wine of the flight. 3rd place for Wine of the Night.

Joel's Tuscan Lunch (The wilds of Kent): Just a hint of browning in the glass The nose has a surprising fresh herbal note with lifted dried cherry and plum. Surprising intensity in the glass - really sapid and delicious. The bright red cherry element speaks of Tuscany. Lovely stuff

Tuscan Lunch chez Joel (Kent countryside, UK): Forest floor and sweet red fruits on the nose with some musty library books. There are bright acids, freshness and very good balance with succulent red fruits and persistence. Loved the style and was a treat to drink a Tig with bottle age.

Medium reddish garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty notes, cocoa/coffee, spices, tobacco, leather, iron, herbs, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, cranberries & plums with earthy notes, mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering smooth & supple finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 24 years of age it is close to or at its peak of development. I doubt any further development would occur from additional aging. Fill was at lower neck; cork stained 1/4 but intact.

This was a part of 1997 and 1999 Tuscan tasting including 3 Brunellos and 2 Super Tuscans, same producers from each year. Leather, dried cherries, tobacco, forest floor. Well structures palate with very fine tannins, well integrated. Good acidity to provide structure. Also time to drink up, but no rush.

Utterly stellar. Purchased on release from a local retailer and stored for 20 years. Cork was perfect. Explosive nose with incredible secondary notes of balsa and sandalwood, textbook Sangiovese, but some tobacco and stern iron as well. Mmm, what a palate, deep currant, iron, blood, yet a lifted cranberry and red fruit note from the Sangiovese.

As since 1982 the grape composition is fixed 80% Sangiovese, 15% CS and 5% CF. Great opportunity to taste 2 bottles of ‘99 side by side. Intense complex aroma of leather, barnyard, dried cherries, dried tomatoes, meat, sweet tobacco, tar, underbrush. Medium body, broad flavour profile of dry berries, smokey and spiced hints, medicinal balsamic touches, delicate texture, well integrated acidity, structured fine tannins. On a verge of passing its peak, so drink up.

Hmm. Difficult to judge. Drinking well (?) for the vintage and age, but I expected Better for some reason. Chalk it up to inexperience with old Italian wines.

Deep ruby, and still pretty homogeneous despite age. Pronounced nose with rose, violets, bell peppers, and paprika. Still some bright acids while tannins quite rounded, and a classic blackberry, sour cherry, and grassy hit, and later exhibits peppery, paprika, and clove nuances. Quite a long, tar-dominated finish. Nice!
Tignanello 1999. Perfekt moden nå med søtlig tobakk, lær og krydder. Silkemyk og sømløs i munn - elegant. Nesten helt pulveriserte tanniner, men likevel med et lite bitt. Pen lengde på ettersmaken. Nydelig. 92p

Weekly tasting group RWP #347; 1999 (@ BS): Complex bouquet with dark berries, leather, earth and rustic flavors as well as some chocolate. On the palate red and dark berries, autumn forest, beautiful acidity, soft acidity and a great length. Completely ready for drinking with still a lovely bite. Great wine.

At Lalimes in Berkeley. Served blind to Walter Michael and Charles along side the 2001 version of this. 3 hour decant for both bottles. Maroonish red in color. Floral cedar nose. Dark fruit in the mouth particularly dark cherries and blackberries. A touch of acidity with complexity on the finish. Likely to be in a 3 year peak period, but should last a few years after that. Most guesses were Bordeaux or California Cab, but I believe Walter said Super Tuscan right before the unveiling. Well done snd an excellent wine.

Good color with no bricking whatsoever. Full bodied and tannins are still at the forefront. A touch sweet which I like. I would say the peak of this wine is in about 3 years. Medium finish.

Claw Dee Puss and I shared this bottle and this is my take on it: D+45min: purple red colour, smells of leather and a little bit of blackberry, smooth in the mouth, dry, but not in a tart way, in the mouth leather, acidity and a little bit of blackberry, in the aftertaste blackberry, leather and a little bit of acidity, good length (30 sec), good, liked it a lot
Terrific. One hour decant this is gorgeous and in a prime drinking window. Terrific nose of red berries, tobacco. Opens on to a fleshy well integrated palate that has layers of interesting flavor. The tannins are still robust but not distracting. Medium finish with early complexity. Dare I say this can drink another ten years but it is so good now.

Pas le nez le plus flamboyant, mais très beau sur le cuir, tabac, étonnamment encore quelques notes fruitées primaires. Un vin qui a vieillit remarquablement, tout en finesse. Une bouteille légèrement supérieure à la dernier bue.

One of the best tastings of Tignanello I've had. Amber in colour and it lasted almost a week with Wine Saver. Very good with pasta and meats. Very fine and full of character. I think this wine needs to be cellared to show its full potential. Drink now and over the next 5yrs.

This is great, but drink up. In many ways this reminded me of a lovely mature St Julien/St Estephe, but with an Italian twist. Brightish red colour, indicating this will not last for another 5 years. On the nose leather, gentle wood, truffle and very ripe red fruit. On the palate very soft tannins, red fruit and leather. We had this with grilled steak with porcini raviolis, some chestnut mushrooms and green beans. To top it off we had some slices of foie gras. I was amazed by how well the foie gras went with the wine, perhaps even better than with the steak! All in all this was absolutely brilliant and I will definitely have a Tignanello again.

Deep red color with some cloudiness. Aromas of red fruits, rhubarb and wood spices. Ripe, beautifully structured and integrated fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and great persistence on the palate. At peak but delicious with the lamb chops and veal at Aroma Restaurant. Drink up!

Deep rust red with pink rim. Deep brooding red and blue fruit. slightly stewed pluminess. Cigar box and sweet vanillin woody oak. Enough gravitas on the nose to suggest this has some way to go. On palate. Tannins are fine but still unresolved. Good dark fruit intensity but oak still dominating at this point. Savoury finish suggests this will be interesting.

The wine was opened several hours beforehand and decanted for 45 minutes. Color was crimson and dark, less sediment than expected and the nose was filled with berries and a hint of eucalyptus. The fruit was all in harmony, raisins, stewed plum, some cocoa and a finish that lingered on the palate. A classic super Tuscan. Paired well with roasted meat. Perhaps it has another 2-3 years left but you will not be disappointed by drinking it now.

Tasted next to the 2012. Nicely evolved in colour and on the nose - forest notes, dried fruit, mushrooms, old leather, smoke, roasted herbs. On the palate very well balanced and quite intense with good fruit, soft tannins, great freshness and length. Really smoky and dusty. Very elegant. A lovely wine at or close to its peak. 93-95

Dark ruby red in color. After about 1 h in the decanter, a lovely and complex nose shows aromas of dark cherries, leather, tobacco, forest floor and truffles. A rather youthful palate follows through with good depth to the crushed and dusty dark cherries & cassis, cedar, medium (+) acidity, some fine grained tannins on the long earthy finish. Superb and very Bordeaux like on the nose and the palate.

Well, this was no '97. It got much better with air and gained weight until the last glass. Started with a bitter/tannic finish that all but disappeared later. There were some cherry, leather, plum, and cedar flavors. Good but not great.

Inviting nose with lots of sweet red fruit but also scents of vanilla. The more mature notes came out after a while. Relatively high acidity and fine but grippy tannins still. I wouldn't completely disagree with previous comments but as I knew it was Sangiovese (tasted blind with a couple of Brunello's) I thought this was one of the Brunellos and I was surprised that this felt more on the younger side. Good fruit and well balanced. This should keep well, but why not drink it now? Long fruity finish. Kept getting better in the glass so still in good health. 91-93

Same bottle as KARL_EK. My wine, did not taste blind.
Mostly clear, medium intense garnet colour. There is some sediment visible.
Clean, developing nose with medium+ intense aromas of dried fruit, stable floor, dried herbs, cassis, leather, ashes, coffee grounds, sour cherries, old wood, a hint of tar, compost heap, ceder and a touch of menthol. Very Bordeaux indeed.
Dry on the palate with medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium body, medium+ tannins (quite grippy but well integrated without any hard. bitterness). Medium+ intense flavours of cassis, dried fruit, dried herbs, barnyard, earth, ash, tobacco, sweet cherries and a bit prunes. The finish is long!
Outstanding. I was surprised that this felt so young. Had my doubts. There is plenty of vibrant fruit and intensely complex nose. This is indeed in a perfect drinking-stage right now. Open up!

On the nose the wine is developing with a medium(+) intensity. Aromas of black fruit - cassis and plum, tobacco, leather, stable, horse skin, mud, decaying leaf, forest floor, oak, coffee, cedar wood and a hint of green bell pepper. Classic Bdx-nose.
On the palate the wine is dry with a medium(+) acidity, body and tannins. The tannins are really robust and grippy. The intensity is medium(+) with flavors of cassis, plum, dark cherry, oak, cedar wood, coffee, tobacco, leather and green bell pepper. The finish is medium(+).
I was 100 percent Bordeaux, right bank, early 2000 on this one. After all that wasn't that bad of a guess. I've only tasted Tignanello in it's youth and never liked it. Clearly it needs a good amount of aging cause this one is really great! In a perfect drinking-phase right now.

3 hr decant prior to bringing to restaurant. This had great nose right at opening, cab sauv. elements showing mostly, cassis, cedar, tobacco. At restaurant this open immediately well and was very resolved of tannins and had great mouthfeel. Slowing the main varietal sangio. started showing with big dark cherry notes followed the typical cab sauv elements. Great place now.

Needed 30 minutes to show. Has not held up as well as other 1999 bdm ccrs and st wines I have had recently. Probably best 2-3 years ago. Medium body, slight nose, falls off midpallete. To me 1999 was an under appreciated vintage but this wine is not a great example of it.

I wish people wouldn't rate wines compared to other wines! On its own merit, this is a fabulous wine. A little closed and acidic on day one (after 40 minutes on the glass and consumed over an hour), this had developed into something extremely special by day 2. A great (and underestimated, in my opinion) vintage in Tuscany, this had silky smooth tanins and layers of flavour which lingered for ages. A perfectly balanced and very special wine, this easily has a few more years left before reaching its peak.

Zachy's Wine Auction - Winter 2014 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): Poured from a mag. This is a nice wine, but suffered a bit from the competition @ the table. Provided by Zachy's during the auction given the Antinori theme. I continue to like my Italians with some age on them - this was much better than the '11 that was poured. Felt like this was drinking perfectly actually - tannins had softened, flavors were integrated. Still get that cough syrup flavor that I find in IGT's, but I liked it. By itself would have been a great wine to drink, but overshadowed.

This somewhat improves with open time. Hints of a corked bottle, (not barnyard), but that seemed to blow off in about 15 -20 minutes. Nose is dominated by tobacco, leather, and desert creosote bush.Tannins are there yet approachable, but fruit is almost non existant. Not up to previous tastings. Can't see this improving. Purchased at release and stored at 55 temp. Last bottle.

While I had some dissapointing encounters with Tignanello from lesser vintages ('98, '00 and '05) lately this bottle restored a bit of the magic that comes with the name. But it also confirmed that a Tig is not buildt for the very long haul. But never mind that, its still a great wine to drink now!
Opaque ruby color, no sign of ambering yet. Full aromas of blackcurrant and some cassis with some laurel, licorice and soft earthy tones. Following trough full bodied with silky smooth tannins that are nicely integrated with the dark fruit and some fresh acidity. The finish is long and fresh echoing the dark fruit on the nose and palate. This wine is drinking great right now, very smooth and complex, and while it will last for some time I don't expect it to improve. Drink now - 2014.

A bunch of Italians on a Saturday afternoon: Ruby/purple. Lots of barnyard on the nose. Slight spice. No fruit left. Dried out on the palate. Nice texture, but lacking fruit. Still, there is a nice earthiness about this too. Slight tannins. This was good, but probably should have been better and probably was a few years ago. Not sure how pristine this bottle was.

A good wine, no doubt about it. Should have some years left, but do no think it will reach higher than 91-92. No complexity to speak of. I'm starting to have a problem with Italian redwines. One can buy just about any redwine between 20-50 euros, store it for 5-10 years, and then it turns out tasting cherries. How interesting is that?

Blind tasting of 3 “Super Tuscans” -with one similar Umbrian blend added for confusion. Tasting ccompanied a dinner of historical Tuscan recipes. Garnet colored edges medium body, moderately long finish. Surprisingly tannic on initial tasting 45 minutes after opening; after 2 - 3 hours tannins were nicely integrated with wonderful multi-layered complex flavors: initial dark fruits (e.g., blackberry, plum) and hint of red fruit (e.g., raspberry), followed by tobacco, chocolate, leather with nice finish. Well balanced lovely wine. First choices split between this Tiganello and a Tenuta dell'Ornellaia.

Medium red with amber bricking. This needs serious open time for the nose to develop. First pour had some interesting barnyard funk. This blew off and then good cigar tobacco, and then some sweet spicy pipe tobacco (you all know the difference). Also some oak and faint herbal notes. And subdued red fruit. Good sangiovese dominated grapes here. Pretty well balanced with acidity carrying through the finish of soft/medium tannins.

Opened and ran through Vinturi. Stingy nose. Little Fruit. Slight improvement after an hour in carafe. Rather light in color/bricky. The best one can say is "faded beauty". Has been in my cellar since 2002 at 58 degrees so believe it was well kept. Surprisingly different experience than others are reporting but consistent over several bottles. Maybe it will get better with a few more hours in the carafe.

Tannins are fully resolved on this big red, but it was not a generous bottle, with some garnet-to-rust in the glass and a sense of the wine being slightly stewed. Took three hours to settle in the carafe, but drinkable. There may have been a faint cork issue with this one.

Compared to the 98 Tig recently tasted, this had less plum, more black than red cherry, lots more cocoa, some brown sugar (I would have guessed some merlot in it had this been blind.) The herbal component did not emerge until about an hour after pouring. Less pepper and leather than the 98. Drank with london broil which had been marinated in balsamic cream, evoo, oregano, garlic, salt & pepper, then grilled indirectly with maple wood.
Day two revealed cherries and pepper, but little else. Still tasty, but not nearly as complex.

Opened and allowed to sit in the bottle for a few hours, decanted and served an hour later. It actually only really opened up after another hour. Deep red in the glass with a somewhat muted nose of black cherries. It had the smooth delivery of darker red fruits I remember from the 97 version of this wine, but it lacked any real precision and complexity - enjoyable enough with dinner, but nothing memorable.

Very clear but in the glass it's still dark with some age around the edge. Cherry (macaroon?), some wet earth and a hint of herb. Still very black - absolutely no signs of color changing. Beautiful dusty earth, dark blackberry and black pepper on the nose. Soft burnished tannins, blackberry fruit and more dusty earth on the palate - just in a beuatiful spot right out of the bottle. Picked up more weight and intensity as it opened up - some more rich coffee, mocha and brambly leather notes started to show up on the nose and the fruit intensified on the palate. Excellent.

This wine is drinking beautifully. It is soft and supple with notes of tobacco, blueberry, burnt toast, and slate. It was open right out of the bottle and it has shed almost all of the dryness that I tasted 3 years ago when I last made notes. There are still some subtle herb scents, but they are muted and actually add to the wine's character. You can taste the Tuscan sun in this wine right now. It isn't going to get much better than it is showing right now. Salut!

I am not a super fan of this wine; although far better than the 2000 vintage I tasted last year. There are wood, fruit, cigar / tobacco in the aromas; Dry, medium body - fruit and quite acidic on the palate; a reasonably good wine all in all.

Excelente.

Not sure why I open a bottle like this now. Tig notoriously needs lots of cellar time. Probably will be much better in 5-10 years. Good concentration and fine tannin but still holding a lot back.

Dark purple in color; Not giving much on the nose but delivered through the palate and finish; Lots of cinnamon notes overlaying blackberry fruit. Very nice velvet texture and balance. From previous experience there is some bottle variation with this wine whether is be from provenance or bottling. This was one of the good bottles but definitely not a blockbuster.

DAWGS OL (IL Sole Restaurant & Wine Bar): This again was one of those wines that seemed to be somewhat acidic at first, and was somewhat disappointing. But, I persevered and poured it a total of three times during the night, and it significantly improved during the last two tries. I dedicated a glass to it and gave it good aeration. Definitely went well with the steak I was having.

Tasted July 27, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue thoughout. Very tight/closed nose giving up perhaps some leather notes, pepper and perhaps dried herbs. Not a lot on the palate as well, maybe some mixed red fruits. However, the wine seemed to have medium acidity and tannins. Is this wine still shutdown or is provenance an issue here? Not sure. My first guess is a provenance issue or perhaps simply an off bottle. Maybe I tasted it too early on. I didn’t get a chance to revisit with airtime. Withholding a rating or recommendation. This wine should have performed much better than this.

Dark garnet. Thick stripes. Nose of ripe cherries and blackcurrant. Good structure with adequate acidity. Medium to full bodied with good tannins and sweetness. Some distant sangiovese herbal notes. A well-made wine. Rating: 90+

Tignanello Vertical Tasting and Dinner (Establishment Restaurant, Manchester): A much more closed nose - duller and a touch green … and uh-oh, there's a tell-tale whiff of TCA. Interestingly, and here's an object lesson in not swirling the wine when the sommelier gives it to you taste, the TCA blew off a little with a lot of aeration. It didn't blow off on the palate though, which remained thin, acidic and largely fruitless throughout the evening. Not that that stopped Ray pouring himself another glass at the end of the evening. Corked.

Very light fruity nose, very young with light rasberry and plum showing through on the very tannic finish. Binnys made no attempt to decant this or the Ornellaia, but that fault was more apparent with this wine. I have never been a fan of Tignanello and this didn't pursuade me any more.

Smokey fruit on the nose showing age. Still dry with high acidity, a bit hollow maybe but the finish is still rather balanced and fun. Drink up. Group's no 6.

Deep ruby, and still pretty homogeneous despite age. Pronounced nose with rose, violets, bell peppers, and paprika.

Lunghezza importante. Sicuramente un vino che ha visto momenti migliori, è stato comunque gradevole sorseggiato dopo cena, su un prato sotto le stelle.

Rating: 90+

Opened 2 hours before drinking. Pairled with rack of lamb. Dark fruit with hints of oak and tobacco. Another consistently good bottle from Antinori.

Corked.

Smooth well balanced wine. Its drinking very well and has an easy going nature that will appeal to many. Not bad at all but it lacks a bit more fruit and punchline.

Meet The Dohrmans at Momo's: Inky. French oak. Concentrated. Clearly flavors of Bordeaux varieties and a nod toward their winemaking style as well. Black fruit. Not great with Italian food, but tasty.

Dark ruby/garnet colour. Aromas of eucalyptus, black fruit, black olive, and plums. Medium-full bodied with pepper, oak, figs, and crushed red berry fruit. Moderate-long finish, ~ 30-40s. Has many years of life ahead of it.

Very light fruity nose, very young with light rasberry and plum showing through on the very tannic finish. Binnys made no attempt to decant this or the Ornellaia, but that fault was more apparent with this wine. I have never been a fan of Tignanello and this didn't pursuade me any more.

Red Carpet: Dark scarlet, not a big nose, bit closed; smokey w/hi notes in there; light silky mouth; coffee, slight bitter fin. Unbla. at this early age?
