  • Fully-mature, medium-bodied, tobacco, leaf, wet earth and red currant packed peppery wine with an austere character. This wine is fully developed and requires consumption.

  • This claret was aged for nearly 20 years now. Overall quite disappointing. Cork in perfect condition. Initial fragrance out of the bottle was good and reminded of good aged Claret. Nose from the glass appeared quite dusty. Some spices. Little fruit. More and more dust (but no hint of TCA). On the palate the wine showed good structure, however, aromatic ally out of balance. I do not expect that this wine will improve with further aging. Compared to the Canon La Gaffeliere from the same vintage 2002 that I enjoyed 2 weeks ago, this here was so disappointing. The Canon in contrast was so vivid with a wonderfully balanced mixture of fruit, minerality and marzipan...

  • 13% alcohol. Very good dense cork. Decanted an hour ahead. The smell from the neck of the bottle was very promising at that stage.
The colour is medium to deep, with some thinning at the edge of the rim. The nose is youthful, with bright fruit, spices and some significant traces of alcohol. The mouth is similar but a good deal worse as the alcohol is more centre stage and tends to overcome the fruit. No tannins and no oak sensation; grip is fine nevertheless.
Not a harmonious Médoc at this stage, and I am not sure if it will ever be; try again in a few years to see if it has calmed down. Not a patch on the Lagrange of the same vintage that I had a few weeks ago. A disappointment then.

  • Just like the last one - nose of black cherries, cedar and graphite. Full of black cherries and blackberry, quite a large-scale mouthful but with a long and pleasingly crisp finish. Very enjoyable indeed and probably still excellent value.
