  • DOA. I guess there will be no repeats of this one. :(

  • Started out with a bouquet that's verdant and leafy, making us a bit fearful that this hadn't exactly 'ripened' in the bottle, but all fears dissipated the instant it crossed the lips as this was just packed with classic Graves smokiness and scorched earth, as classic a profile as you could ever hope for and every bit as distinctive and terroir-driven as Haut-Brion itself -- something true of all three vintages in fact, which will be putting me on a Haut-Bailly buying spree. And it did manage to lose the green leafiness with some time in the glass, developing instead an antiquey scent of old wooden cabinets. The only thing that might have made me think this a notch below the '47 is that it didn't feature the same perfect consilience between scent and flavor, but it is still one of the best Graves I've ever had from any address. And it is deceptively rich too. I think this may have had denser material than either the '47 or the '49.
