This wine belies its age by decades. Medium garnet with only slight browning, quite transparent and very pretty to look at. The nose is clean, focus and majestic, with black cherry, dried plum and mild tertiary aromas in the background. Light on the entry yet feels substantial as it glides across the palate with a pure, vivid fruit core and perfectly balanced acidity. Impressive length, with tiny hints of tannin in the finish. A wine of first-growth quality that transcends its appellation.

Late Nov 2009, "steaks and wines" evening: original cork; into the neck fill; opened (not decanted) 15 minutes before consumption; restrained aromas/flavors of chocolate, coffee and red fruits; clear and well-balanced on the palate; medium body; slightly tanninic finish.
A 1945 is always a great experience.
Daniel Saunders (Barsac) bottling (see picture).
Next and last bottle of the evening was a Kreydenweiss Kastelberg Riesling SGN 1990 (see tasting note).
