Tasting this alongside a 2019 Domaine Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the 2021 Coudoulet de Beaucastel was a great experience. The Usseglio, of course, won the night, but it was fun and educational to see how the others compared. While the Coudoulet was feminine and the Usseglio supremely handsome, the La Bouïssiere Gigondas showed the rusticity and meatiness of the AOP even to the point of being brutish.

Domaine La Bouïssiere's 2020 Gigondas is a deep ruby blend of 75% Grenache, 21% Syrah and 4% Mourvèdre. Tasted over a three-hour interval from a bottle that had been decanted through a Vinturi aerator, it unfurls an aromatic array of blackberries, Morello cherries, Provençal herbs, white pepper, licorice and dry earth. Full-bodied, fresh, lightly oaked and with well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%), it delivers flavors in line with the aromas. At this early stage the tannins are still a bit astringent and pervasive on the solid mid-palate and lengthy, lifted finish. Delicious now, this Gigondas will benefit from a couple of years in the cellar, during which time the tannins will better assimilate. It may merit an even higher score in the future. If you choose to pop the cork now, give it at least an hour of air. Drink 2025-2035.
