A wine on a SAGA cruise - easing itself gently yet gracefully towards its twilight years. Enjoyable with a pale, almost burgundian robe. The dregs worth a slurp, as the sediment provides a hint of former days. Past its best, but there's no reason that a well-cellared bottle of this won't suddenly fall from the perch.

Drunk for dinner of braised ox cheek. 14.5%. Deep, opaque garnet. Stewed black fruits - plums and cherries - with damp forest floor and truffles. A bit of warmth from the alcohol was in evidence. The tannins were still there but had blended in well. Overall it was better on day 2 with the extra air. Nice balance and length. A very good, mature Gigondas - this bottle was drinking really rather well.

Dark garnet, tones of red fruit, dried plums, humus, leather, some tobaco, still firm tannins
