A bit past its prime but fun to taste and ponder as the last wine of an evening. Some parts of the wine still intact, others faded, so overall a bit disjoint.

The complete surprise packet. This is a richly flavoured and balanced cabernet that shows aged gamey touches around the edges - perfect. Plush and soft berry fruits early; excellent varietal definition. Fruit is very fresh and front ended, and very pure. Trails off a touch on the finish.

Giaconda Vertical (Sydney, Australia): Tobacco, blackcurrant/cassis, with some hints at floral notes as well as some more funkiness. The palate is elegant, but in this case it lacks complexity, texture and the overall impressive structure of the '99. Will drink nicely over the next couple of years, but I don't think it'll get a whole lot better.
