  • I was really worried about this bottle, thus had no expectations going in. I was extremely surprised and pleased with the result and glad I decided to open it now. This bottle was kept in my mother's basement for a minimum of 20 years, and never moved until recently. Not the most optimal conditions for the longest of ageing, but adequately worked better than most. Thinking 1980 was an off year, I underestimated the finesse and staying power of this little Chateau. Immediately on opening there was a strong ethereal layer of smoke, black licorice, cinnamon/nutmeg, and cedar. This only developed further after decanting and by the last glass it was a subtle, still lightly tannic on the finish, balance of those notes on the nose plus bursting cherry and red fruits, with an acidity that rivaled a crisp sauvignon blanc. A lush, mature, and extremely well made blend from Graves to be able to survive 20+ years of sitting in a basement. Incredible.
