  • A little fruit clinging on, the nose is not in any way intense! Slightly diffuse tertiary notes. Some cedar and undergrowth; quite light and lacking fruit on the palate. Tannins still apparent on the finish. Way past it's best but not undrinkable.

  • A lesson in how moving wine affects its taste in the short term. I moved 6 bottles of this wine from the cellar in France to London via car a few weeks ago - a 5 hour journey. The wines were then left in the cellar in London for about a week. I had two bottles in the first two weeks and they were tannic and acidic with a thin smell and taste. Just opened one up tonight after it had 4 weeks to settle and another 3 days sitting upright in the kitchen. A lot of sediment but much richer and much more complex and pleasant. Aromas of meat, spices, earth - still quite powerful- appearance - medium bodied bordering on dark - clear but with large chunks of sediment in the glass. Taste - somewhere between mature and tannic, some grip on the teeth. Overall quite good considering the year. Previously I had said that this wine might mature a bit more but I have changed my mind - this needs to be drunk now.

24-Jan-08: Had another bottle tonight and this was a belter. On the nose really dark and meaty with the smell of peanuts (not sure I've ever smelt peanuts before in a wine - first time for everything) really complex and spicey.

  • I thought this wine would be thinning quite a bit and showing its age but infact it still has a lot of body left in it to make me think it would age for another 3-5 years, maybe more.

The colour is still inky black with very little thinning at the rim. On the nose it is very powerful with the smell of white pepper, smoke, minerals, grafite, spices, dark fruits, prunes and with buttery creamy undertones. In the mouth there are still quite a lot of tannins but with an earthy taste and quite a bit of acidity to balance it all off - the wine has good grip and is still quite compact. I think the flavours will probably develop with more time in tbe bottle.

I see a previous reviewer had a bad experience with this wine ($10 was a bargain price to pay for this wine) so perhaps the bottle had been spoiled, but the bottle we had was stored in the same cellar since 1997 and it was very good.

  • Uninteresting and mostly wood on the palate. Most of this hit the sink.

[$10; bought at a bargain bin sale; Decanted 30 minutes but it didn't help]
