This wine aged nicely. The color was a dark garnet. The taste included black and blue berries. My wife also sensed licorice. The finish was long and graduated. Unfortunately, it was my one and only Bottle.

Decanted about one hour and had with grilled steak tips. Wine is tasting great right now….patience pays off! One more of this vintage left…won’t be waiting long to drink that one as I don’t want to risk it turning.

sb Still deep ruby black; with just a hint of age at the rim. Light blackberry dark currant aromas Very soft yet rich mouthfeel Still lots of dark berry fruit, Oak totally integrated/faded Absolutely the best showing of this wine so far. Well stored bottles may be fantastic. This particular bottle was leagues ahead of my most recent in 2015. YFS
Wonderful, a crowd favorite on Xmas eve. This baby was fully integrated and singing. Typical Caymus profile, cassis and chocolate, but without the flabbiness. Doubt further aging would add value, it was drinking at apex IMO.

Drinking very well still. Lots of fruits and deep rich dark red appearance. Tannins have really fell to the side and the true expression of Caymus stands out. Did not stand up to the long evening of being opened and began to lose it fruit forward flavor. Drink now if you have them.

Good garnet color with no signs of ageing on the edges. Has aromas of blackberry, cherry and stoniness or minerals. It has flavors of black berries, black currant, cherry and dust but they are starting to fade. Tannins are still well pronounced and are more prominent than the fruit. Medium body with a long finish. Need to drink soon.

Drinking very well right now. Sometimes I find Caymus too new world in style but this has mellowed into a very enjoyable, lush, integrated wine. I would not let these sit too much longer since I believe in the law of diminishing returns.

Classy wine, in a sweet spot right now. The fruit is still primary with loads of blackberry, but time has rounded this wine, and the balance is sweet; spice here, some soft tannins still, but certainly no harm in popping one now. Went perfect with ribeye

Solid wine. Still holding firm. Fruit is not overwhelming. Some chocolate. Much better than the 2004 that I drank a few nights ago, which was all fruit.

decanted for 1.5 hours and only could not dent the jammy fruits, still there after all these years. tried pairing with smoked baby back ribs with a honey and brown sugar rub which did not go well (fruits clashed with the sweet smoked flavors from the ribs despite some lingering tannins). last bottles in my cellar.

Decanted for 2 hours which seemed to mellow out the jammy fruits. Mild Tannins. Paired well with bone in ribeye (smoked and reverse seared on grill). Drink up.

PnP. Easily the wine of the night. Tannins are virtually gone and the fruit was still very forward. Dark inky black look to it and nose full of ripe red fruits. Lots of chocolate and cassis in the mouth. Lots of good comments from novice wine drinkers at NYE party. Drink now if you have some to drink.

i am not a big fan of big fruity california red but this paired well with smoked brisket for christmas dinner. decanted for 1.5 hours and it settled down a little but still too much fruit forward, jammy, fig, current flavors that almost overpowered the smoked meat.

PnP this bottle. At first it was a little tight, but had very good structure for its age. After an hour, this wine opened up very well expressing toffee, blackberry, figs and currant. Very nice finish and better than expected dark fruit notes and tannins.

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Mature, maybe a bit past actually, nice typicity, black currant, bramble, boysenberry, pepper, and wood. Medium plus body, nice tannins. Brighter at first with nice black fruits, this seemed to lose something and come off more oaky after the first hour. Drink up.

My fellow tasters liked this wine and it's good for a regular cabernet. But with Caymus you always expect more and I thought it petered out pretty quickly. Medium body with ripe varietal fruit character.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), strawberry, flint, oak and vanilla. It tastes like black currant (cassis), blackberry, cherry, flint, oak and vanilla. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

This got better as it sat opened. Patience rewarded us with a nice mature, Rich, juicy wine that is well integrated with a nice blend of tannins, fruit forward, with a touch of vanilla and oak making for a short to moderate finish. Drink up now.

This particular bottle (the last) was quite good. Smooth, balanced, integrated, in a great drinking window. It still has some stamina, but it's hard to see how it's going to get much better with additional cellaring.

Well, as with couple other notes this one was disappointing, not much of a nose, some vanilla, dark dried fruit, tobacco, slight hint of familiar vanilla. On the palette tobacco and blackberry, jammy. Did not open up much over 2 hours. I feel this one is past its prime now, at least my bottle.

This bottle has lay in the same spot since 5/09, unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment, muted nose, the palate was a bit alcoholic with hints of dark plum, currants and chocolate, better and more complex after being opened for a couple of hours but based on this bottle fruit was fading. Drink soon!!

I think this is drinking really well right now. Initial nose was flawless. Needed 30-45 minutes to open up but first sip was delicious even when tight. Loads of oak on the finish, rounded out tannin and good/high alcohol with medium acidity. Super smooth lingering finish and nose improved with every sip. I think the 06-08 vintages are hitting their stride.

Opened and poured into Bordeaux glasses about 90 minutes before tasting and consumed over the ensuing 90 minutes. Currants on the nose, along with some vanilla and hints of charcoal/smoke. Medium-full body. Currants and vanilla (or chocolate) on the palate along with hints of tobacco and creme brulee. This was a big boy, with a long, fruit-driven finish. Completely integrated and still reasonably tannic, so it's either at its peak or it's approaching it. After three hours of air, the hint of creme brulee became quite prominent. Delicious.

Opened about 30 minutes before tasting. Terrific nose - mostly currants. Currants and plums on the palate, with no secondary flavors whatsoever. Rich, velvety texture and pretty damned tasty, but the finish was OK at best. Compared to a bottle less than six months ago, the tannins were barely noticeable, making it a little too smooth. Given the absence of tannins and my recent experiences with the '04 and '05, I'd say it's time to drink up.

I really liked this wine. It was incredibly silky and smooth with some classic CA Cabernet flavors. I opened the wine at 1PM and started really drinking it around 6PM. Good mix of fruit, vanilla with some leather.

Medium deep ruby garnet. Sweet vanilla and cassis flavors that fade a bit in the mid palate much more than previous bottles. Still an easy crowd pleaser, and not the slap you in the face 2012 Caymus, but this comes off a bit disappointing in context. Not cracking up by any means, but seems to be fading a tad. Drink now(?) while it still has crowd appeal?

I had a couple '05s recently that were underwhelming, but this one is the real deal. No signs of age. Big nose - black fruits and a hints of leather and vanilla. All black and blue fruits on the palate. Not particularly complex, but this is about yumminess, not analysis. Huge fruit and serious viscosity lead to a very nice, long finish. My wife, who'd never heard the phrase "Rutherford Dust", said the finish was "dusty", and indeed it was. Textbook.
Dark ruby color. Black fruit nose. Monolithic and linear, and a little flabby on the palate with soft rounded tannins. A bit of a fruit bomb with a medium finish. Not very complex. Nice wine if that's what you like.

Excellent wine. Nose had dark fruit, currants, and hints of oak. The pallet was filled with a huge amount of casis, black fruit and boysenberry. Tannins and oak were integrated nicely - very harmonious and balanced. Big wine, yet it was elegant and seductive. Drank next to some pretty cheap Riojas. 93 points

A good solid bottle, seemed to be showing much more red and blue fruit and most of the oak has subsided, drank very smoothly - though lacked complexity from previous bottles. Drank against 2005 Robert Foley Claret - and no contest the Foley was far more complex. From previous bottles, seems to be about the same or less, going to try again in a few months, maybe just an off bottle or in a dumb phase.

Decanted 1/2 hour. Solid garnet, slightly lighter on the edges. Heavy red fruits on the nose, with a little cedar, very engaging. Fuller bodied than I expected, and tannins are still quite noticable on the palate; this must have been quite chewy on release. Smoky cherry, cigar box on the palate. Solid finish. Kinda simple but tasty. I'd guess you could count on a couple more years of solid performance, and would be better if tannins resolved more. One more bottle in my cellar, so I'll sit on it another 18 months or so.

Very deep dark center, red rim with some signs of age. Sweet, plums and damsons, pipe tobacco. Smooth, some blackberries and brambles, crushed olives, some ripe strawberries, moderate tannins and acid. Better with some air, drinking well but still not very exciting.

While well-made, I wasn't a huge fan. Couldn't get beyond what seemed jammy, syrupy and candied fruit sensations. medium aromas, full bodied, long finish. Improved when accompanied by dinner (prime rib and braised short ribs). Decanted for 90 minutes, but perhaps should've done more.

Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for 2 hours. Nose of red currant, blackberry, mocha, licorice, milk chocolate and baking spice. A red currant core integrated with mocha, baking spice and fine tannins on the palate. Rich and velvety mouth feel that leads to a long finish. Full bodied and fruit forward. Drinking beautifully. Paired with filet Béarnaise.

Smooth with loads of vanilla, toasted oak and a nice complex spiciness. Such a rich wine. Not that i dont enjoy it but not my preferred style. Is there a Bordeaux commune with this style? I remember having 96 caymus in 2000 and it was more like a Paulliac.

Liked this wine a little better than the 2007 as this seemed to have more structure and the fruit was not as over the top lush. Dark fruits with spice. Attacks early and often. Some milk chocolate notes. Hard to mistake caymus for anything else

I held on to my last bottle for several years, and it was a mistake. The Caymus flavor profile is still there, but as the intensity of the fruit fades a bit, there isn't much behind it. It seemed a bit cloying and without the structure I expected at this point. Quite a contrast with an '06 Shibumi Knoll I had a few days ago that was just hitting its stride and amazed me with its depth and fine layers.

I used to be a huge fan of Caymus, and I still think the older vintages show very well, but every young bottle I open leaves me slightly disappointed. It's a good wine for what it is and it's consistency and wide availability make it a good restaurant fall back option, but I will no longer buy this for my cellar. It's become homogenized with many other low end cabs and is even easily confused with some Shiraz. It's thick and syrupy and oaky and generally pedestrian.

Decanted for a little over an hour, and consumed over the next two. Paired with a NY Strip and this was really rich and extracted, with a decent amount of oak. As others have noted, blackberry and chocolate as far as detailed palate notes, but just a really cloying sweetness when paired with the strip. After dinner, when sipping on this without food, this was much better but still a bit heavy on the extraction on the sweetness. If you are a fan of this style, you will enjoy this wine. If not, I would let these sit until the fruit mellows and secondary flavors develop.

I'm typically impressed by Caymus and this is no exception. This is silky smooth, concentrated, effortless, decadent and so composed. There's some oak noticeable but not too much. The last glass is something else. I'm always surprised that this producer isn't rated more highly. I recently had a very highly rated '08 Napa cab around the same price that was awkward, grainy and drab by comparison. I guess the extra couple of years may make some difference. This is drinking lovely now but will still benefit from more time in bottle. This is the type of Napa cab I love to bring out if a relative visits from Europe, just to show what Napa wine can really do. Lovely stuff.

Chocolate covered blackberries with a hint of vanilla oak, that pretty much sums it up. Showed more structure after about an hour of air and proved to be a delicious drink with grilled burgers. Overpriced for what it is, but still a very well made wine.

I've gravitated away from this style lately, but opted to try it tonight with a chateaubriand steak sandwich, which worked out well. The vanilla sweetness has faded a bit, which means that the sinister dark, concentrated fruit is all that remains. It's so dark and rich, it's practically bitter, like taking a chunk of a 100% cocoa bar for cooking. There's not much complexity and little to no acid, which leaves the palette exposed to just the fruit. Tannin is non-existent as well. If I had another bottle, I'd hold it for quite awhile to let the fruit thin out.

Last time tasted was one year ago, and this one still needs to rest, think at least another year or two. Was a PnP and the juice was a dark garnet, with that same dark fruit from last years notes, but a bit more integrated. Tannins still a bit on the chewy side, but after 2 hours really settled down. Still had flavors of espresso, mocha, with a bit of cedar, and had a pleasant mid-plate with a good minute long finish. Only drank 1/2 and will see how it holds up tomorrow. It has potential, think could pop to a 92 or 93 in a few years. If you got'em, they still could use a few years.. but if opening... do yourself justice, it needs a few hours of decanting time...

Tasted head to head with Caymus 07. This wine still have hard tannins, much more so than the 06. A bit of a dusty road in the tannins, fruit was good, but a bit more muted than the 07. Not as much of a fruit bomb as the more recent vintages, eg. 07 & 09. More complex than the 07, better balance between fruit and tannin.

Tale of two Cabs. We followed an 06 Merus cab with the more pedestrian Caymus. While I can see the mass appeal of this wine it never can match the smaller production Napa Cabs in the same price range. Not sure I will purchase more Caymus when there are so manY more interesting offerings in this price category.

PnP. Not 100% familiar with how Caymus cab typically acts, but this bottle was ready to go the second the cork left the neck. The oncoming fruit intensity was apparent as soon as the murky, black-as-night purple coloring splashed around the bottom of the glass. Nose was enticing, made me want to dive in and take a nap in the glass, full of black currant, berries left laying in the sun, warm cola, dust, and barnyard. Taste was even better; this bad boy came from some seriously concentrated grapes, probably the size of pebbles. Loads of cherry cola, chocolate raspberry cake, and espresso. Medium-length finish, ample body, this wine kicks ass. Velvety smooth tannins, acidity in check, so well-balanced. Killer cab. Buy buy buy.

This wine is great and likely won't get much better. drink now, but give it a good hour in a decanter of like we did, opened the bottle a few hours before drinking, didn't decant or aerate, but we gave it plenty of time. Its perfect. The "yellow" labels do so well, they drink wayy better than most 1st labels -- Caymus delivers again.

Had with the Turkey Day redux dinner with the fam. Wonderful nose that was intoxicating on its own. Dark fruits and a touch of smokiness on the palate. Nice, integrated tannins and good structure with some, but not incredible, length. Finishes well, but doesn't linger particularly long. A very well crafted wine. I liked it more than the '04 Don Melchor and definitely better than the Cliff Lede we had with the orginal T-day dinner. Would definitely buy more.

Last Caymus (an '05) was a tad disappointing, but this bottle was outstanding and renewed my zeal for this winery. Decanted for about an hour and the wine was drinking well from the get go. Fabulous dark fruits wrapped in dark chocolate, with touches of leather and spice. Nice body, concentration, and persistence. If you like this style of wine, it is fantastic. Wow, so much better 9 months later. But it was probably my post-cold taster being off. This was not the vegetal, bitter disappointment I had in Sept. 2010. Big and bold, full of cassis, blackberry, leather and smoke. A bit over-extracted, but enjoyable.

This 2006 Caymus Cab is hitting its sweetspot. The last two bottles were very very good. Minimal decanting. Fabulous nose of nutmeg, cinamon, sweet oak and dark berries with a touch of smoke. Great deph and complexity. On the palate this wine is a bit acidic at first but after 30 minutes it blows off. Delicious dark fruit interwidden with sweet toasty oak, licorice and nce acidity. Very velvety, smooth and silky, with a nice grip on the finish. Great balance between fruit, acidity and tannins. The tannins have tamed a bit since a couple of years ago but it now seems quite more balanced and way more approachable. The fruit has also evolved from the fruit bomb I first tasted a while back. This 06 has grown up and it is entering a sohisticated stage of development. This wine is still very sexy but it has grown up, gone to college and has achieved quite a level of balance, sophistication and some panache (sorry for the analogies but I could not resist myself). The finish is very nice with lingering delcious fruit flavors attacking and lingering for over 40 seconds. Simply put, Delicious and I wish I had more. Maybe I can find some soon. Drink now and drink plenty. 93-94.

Let breathe for a couple hours in the glass. Deep brooding purple/black color in the glass. Totally opaque throughout - just showing through at the rim, but barely. Blackberries, blueberries, dark bitter chocolate, rich molasses and burnt oak. Big greatly structured nose. Some serious juice. Dark forest floor, black olives, licorice. All dark qualities here. Great extraction. With air the caramelized sugar cookie and baking spices showed their face - more of the nutmeg and all spice variety. Palate is very thick and shows a lot of force. More black fruit, some mineral aspects here but its mostly the fruit bomb show. Dark roast coffee and more chocolate and oak. Long finish. Big tannins, alcohol and lower acidity as a whole. Though there's a lot of a lot, the finish is fairly balanced as a whole. A solid effort and a good buy in this price range - as long as you're looking for big Napa fruit.

This would be a classic and score even better if it were not so over the top and too much extraction or just a fruit bomb, seems too sweet to me and has the stuff to be lower in alcohol and more elegant style. Still a very good cab but I believe could even be better.

Popped and poured at Cafe Urbano with Dorothy Bart, Starla, Bob and Charlene Jones. My first bottle of Caymus in years and my first bottle of this vintage ever. It did not disappoint. Strong aromas and flavors of this classic cab. Excellent balance and structure. Still in it's youth, should improve as it develops maturity. Possible score upside in future. Bob Jones and Starla loved it. First red wine to get a positive review from Starla. She came back for more after first glass. Horray!

It has been about a year since my last bottle and must say it just gets better with time. Flavor intensity has picked up, tannins smoother, midpalate gained depth with the vanilla and a sweeter choco note developing than i remembered. Finish is gaining its stride. It has a complexity to improve another or two but must say it is drinking very well now. Mid 90s.

This is obviously a bit favorite among those who like their Cabs sweet and lacking in any dryness, but I'm not sure why they don't just save a bunch of bucks and drink Zinfandel. Too much residual sugar for my taste although I can see how many would like it if they don't like dry Cabs as it's clearly a well made wine that drinks well young. Just can't imagine why anyone would pay $60 to $70 a bottle for it when there are many similar wines out there for less than half the price.

Big weekend at the Harris's. We had the following wines in order - Pride Mt. Cab 05, Showket Cab 05, Caymus Napa Cab 06, Hanna Bismark 01 and Justin justification 08. All wines were excellent, many had similar profiles and can continue to age. Pride had less oaky flavors, drinking at its peak, Showket was also drinking at it's peak, more Oak but the Caymus Napa and Hanna were both bigger in structure and flavor. Caymus with it's pronounced vanilla profile and the Hanna from start to finish robust fruit and oak flavors, both the All four of these wines had a strong lasting finish. All were bright with flavors not earthy. I loved then all.

Chocolate, prune, and walnut. The walnut catches up at the finish, providing a refreshing counterbalance. Drinking very well right now, and opening up with a half hour or more of air.

My wife and I both agree this is a delicious bottle of Napa Cabernet. Gave it an hour of aeration to show all the gobs of dark fruit and subtle smokiness. IT"S GOOD

Decanted this before I drove up to my friends. Didn't start drinking it until about two hours after that. Had a great nose of vanilla, blueberry, and Cassis. The first sip really coated the mouth with its full body. The tannins were still there after two hours but melted away as we drank the bottle. Flavors of red and black fruits along with some spice and a touch of earth that led to a nice long layered finish. Very big wine! It went very nicely with the steak my friend grilled. Forgot how good Caymus can be!

Balanced. Restrained fruit. Smooth. Very good, but not great. Lacking any distinctive character and missing that element that makes you leap out of the chair. Needs more bottle time? Unless it improves with age, probably overvalued.

Licorice, tar, tobacco, bitter chocolate and plum. A bit bitter and more vegetal than most vintages of this wine. But maybe it is my post-head cold palate. I would like to think so, because this one disappointed tonight.

I love the regular Caymus bottling. It's a consistent taste or Napa. Kind of the Goldie-Locks bottle, just right 90% of the time. This vintage is noticeable with less of the chocolate covered cherries richness of the 2004, we had recently. Color is beautiful dark Garnet, jeweled and brilliant. Nice viscosity and coats the glass and palate. The nose has much of the floral purple flower bouquet that I am use to with this bottling. The flavor profile, was still a sweet red berry melange, with oak present, and not over the top. Some of the savory spices I encountered in the 2004 were not present in this bottling. Again, this is a consistent well made Caymus, just not a rich and deep as some other vintages. I am really looking forward to popping an 2007 of this in the future, and retain my 2005 bottle for safe drinking later. I gave a 91+ to this effort. With the right food pairing, it may show better.

Compared with 03 Shafer at dinner with friends. Most preferred the Caymus, which most described as sweeter and with a flowery nose. The Shafer was more dry and more nuanced complexity and while good with dinner would probably do better on it own compared to the Caymus.

Popped, decanted and left alone in a cool basement for 6 hours. Enjoyed the wine on the deck prior and into the beginning of a lamb chop dinne.r The wine was perfect! Fabulous nose, taste and finish!

We drank three wines at Katie's 40th birthday celebration. All were drinking really well! Good color and body. The Honig Stagecoach 01 is just past its peak, slightly lighter in body then the Caymus 96 and Eponymous 05. The Honig Stagecoach 01 hit its stride after 30 minutes of breathing, it was more silky on the finish with suttle earthy flavors combined with a little oak. The Eponymous is a big wine capable of aging for a wile longer. Bursting with fruit flavors and oak. The Caymus 06 was better on the nose and more complex than the others with vanilla, berries and a finish that lasted for 8 seconds after finishing.

Very high alcohol gives a sharp sweetness. Lots of complexity- blackberry and cherry fruit with a hint of cigars- especially after it dries on the lips. A fantastic drink.

Really liked this vintage for Caymus, full bodied cab with expressive fruit on the front blackberry, plum hits of dark cherry, midpalate was well balanced layered with vanilla, cocoa and smoke, finish has very good legs with hints of licorice and cedar notes. Should improve well with time. low to mid 90s. -S

This is really good, definitely recommend this but too expensive to be a reasonable QPR wine. Enjoyed earlier tonight with Kim for a Valentine's Day dinner of lobster and grilled beef tenderloin. Very good, typical high end Napa cab, very balanced, medium bodied, soft and smooth with a long aftertaste, perhaps the only negative critique that I could bring up would be some lack of complexity compared to both earlier vintages and definitely when compared to the older brother Special Select. This is in a good drinking window right now, this bottle was opened for almost three hours prior to consumption, does not necessarily need to be formally decanted if opened for some time prior to consumption, however plenty of oak and tannins left for at least 5 additional years of cellaring. Nose brighter and more floral then expected, cedar and blueberry and hint of vanilla. Primary flavors consisted of typical Napa cab cassis, controlled oak, mild earth / granite, dark stone fruit with licorice and a hint of smoke developing on the aftertaste.

Cocoa, cedar, graphite (hmmm...pencil dipped in chocolate?), and blueberries. Not really sure all those tastes are in there, but I am sure that I like this wine. Nice way to ring out the old and welcome in the new. Happy New Year!

Dark red color. On the nose, gobs of fruit (plum stood out to me). If you like fruit bombs with little acids & tanins then this is your wine. The wine is great to drink on it's own but low to medium acidity and light tanins make this more of a relax and drink wine than a food wine. Overall, a fine wine if you like a lot of fruit without the tannins or acidity of a Bordeaux style red.

Opaque black with a dark ruby rim deviation. Nose is quite intense with mostly espresso, blackberry, black currant, cedar, black licorice, and burnt wood. Quite full bodied with good tannin grip and a moderate acidity for Caymus. The flavors impress with blackberry, dried fruit, mocha powder, and minty herbal notes. There is a bitter component to the long, jammy finish, but this may dissipate with time since this was popped and poured. Alcohol is high and hot. Good delineation, but the components seem disjointed. Definitely needs decanting and also needs some additional time in bottle. Good effort, but doesn't live up to the Caymus brand.

This was the second bottle of 06 I have had in the last month and felt it was lacking somewhat from the previous. Opened up in about 30 minutes, nice fruit, with chocolate and oak aroma, taste of Cherry, and blackberry had a smooth long lasting finish (but not as smooth as the previous bottle). Somewhat linear, needs further aging.

Had a bottle tonight at the "Keg" at Desert Ridge in Phoenix, AZ. They charged $96.00 for this, totally reasonable.
We popped and poured and enjoyed this Cab with our steaks, nice smooth Cab, got better after it opened up a little. I would buy this again. Nice that a restaurant is wine friendly and charges a reasonable markup.

I like Caymus wines but I'm not a big fan of this. A bit overripe without a lot of complexity or finesse. Drank my first bottle about a year ago and thought it would improve with age, but I don't see this happening. Wouldn't buy it again.

Nose: Huge candied nose with prominent oak components. The Nose just filled the room right off the bat. Very nice but I was afraid the oak monster might get me.
Taste: This wine is as good as it smells. Great weight (very full bodied), concentration and intensity. The oak is a bit dominant though but the dark fruit is quite evident. A little heat is comming off and I may need to further decant this monster. Still, In all its power, it manages to keep it together for the most part.
2nd day: The wine has put a little weight, more fruit has emmerged and the oak has tamed a bit. You get an almost chalky consistency on the palate, very nice. The wine has evolved quite nicely. It took me 2 hours to finish this bottle off and I can say the wine changed for the better. Quite good. I have to agree with WS on this one this time.

Enjoyed this more than the 07 Caymus. They both have very similar profile but this one tasted less jammy while retaining the smooth dark fruit. A bit more weighty too. Though in the end I preferred the Sequoia Grove by a little.

Sweet nose of ripe fruit, maybe some strawberries. I think the description on the back label of the bottle is spot on: "dark, opulent, and supple." Thick and full bodied. Low acidity although underlying fruit which is currently hiding behind a hefty oak treatment hints at more to come. Super fresh, pure and young tasting. Approachable now, I predict this wine will gain significant complexity in the bottle with 4-5 years.

I was surprised at how civilized this wine was, considering its age and pedigree. I've always been enamored with Caymus even though my taste is Old World. This vintage did not disappoint. With 30 minutes in the decanter, it poured out chocolate and tar and hicory on the nose. Silky with refined tannins that just complimented the blackberry and maybe a finish of the slightest hint of strawberries. Highly recommended.

Mocha hits me first on the nose. This is followed by black fruits...namely blackberries and black currants. and just a bit of herbs. There's a touch of cherry and anise on the nose as well. The oak is quite evident (bordering on overpowering, but walking the line very nicely) with some vanilla and burnt sugar coming through. The tannins are a bit upfront, but I admit to drinking this too young. Full bodied with medium acidity, I'd expect this wine to have another 5-10 years ahead of it.

Tasted at winery – medium ruby, clear. Soft and youthful nose of red cherries, plum, oak and spice. Generous flavours of black cherry and plum. Medium to full body, medium to high acidity and tannin with a medium length finish. Lots of fruit on the palate, but also has the stuffing to age well. Much more fruit forward then the 2006 Special Selection at this point. Needs time. Excellent. 90+

Deep, dark and beautiful in the glass. The nose is stunningly complex with ripe fruit and wonderful sweetness. The entry bursts with cabernet flavors, coating the entire mouth. The midpalate is supported by perfect acidity and the finish, oh the finish!! Cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and pure fruit linger so beautifully. This is amazing now, and will age beautifully.

Napa February 2009; 2/16/2009-2/20/2009: Blackberries, casis and some dark chocolate. Medium + bodied and quite elegant, good texture. More chocolate on the palate with tannic finish, some smokiness shows up after it was sitting in the glass for a while. At this stage this actually tasted slightly better than the Special Selection 91-92

The nose carries strong cabernet fruit right out of the gate. There also seems to be a hint of something like grilled meats on the nose. This wine has some lite acidity with some stronger oak on the finish. Some spice notes deliver nicely, but the fruit hinted at by the nose is a little weaker than I was hoping for.

Rich, sweet, young, nice tannins, good oak, loads of fruit. I have one more but will look to add 1-2 for long term comparison. This is my first Caymus. While nice, I was expecting more, but maybe it needs more time. I had with some dove chocolate and it really made it sing. Having some beef stew later tonight with the remaining wine. Decanted about 3 hours. This can easily be enjoyed now, but i think it will be perfect in five years when it can all come together. Enjoy!!!

tasted a week ago. Although still young, I had to open it up. Deep black/ purple color, Extremely concentrated. Tons of dark fruit, vanilla and oak. Then let it decant for an hour, the wine seemed twice as rich than when first opened, huge finish. This is the kind of wine that will make it hard to look at others the same.
Poured at a retailer tasting. Inky garnet color. Aromas of rose petals, dried flowers, currants and cassis. Full-bodied, with flavors of pepper, spice and red fruit. Tannins are a bit dry and slightly austere through the finish, though I suspect they'll round out with some time as there's good depth & length to the fruit on the palate.

Grey Bear Summer Party. Vertical Tasting 1995, 1999 and 2006 Caymus Napa's. Started Youngest to oldest. 1995 was a little brown, soft out of the bottle, no breathing required, Medium body, smelled good, upfront fruit light finish. Still nice but way past prime. Drink now, will still be drinkable for another year or so. 1999 very good color, good mouth feel, more upfront fruit and a hint of oak on the finish. Drinking well and will continue for another 3 to 4 years. 2006 needed breathing, was drinking well after 30 minutes after opening. Very berry! good oak, will likely be drinking at it's prime in a year from now and will hold up for 4 to 5 years. Among the tasters (Approximately 7 to 8 people) each year had a few fans and favored the wine to the other years. My favorite when drinking at it's prime would have been the 95 but now it was last for me. Caymus does drink best 3 to 5 years after it's vintage year so none were really at their best.

Vertical tasting 92, 97, 02 and 06. the range was chosen to provide perspective on how the wine ages over time. The years did vary but the wine maker and where the grapes come from have not changed. 06 was as good as the 02. the difference was that this wine had a slight bite to it as it was a little young. The fuit flavors were very prominent and the finish had the vanilla/oak flavors I really like. I would hold for one year just to get a good balance of fruit and Oak to drink at it's prime. if you drink now that is fine I suggest letting it breath for 1 hour before to calm down the wine.

Textbook.

Dynamite with some steaks. Really delicious and I'm sad it is my last bottle. Hope the 07's and 08's are as good.

Decanted for 20 minutes. Great color

A little more tannin than in previous vintages but very drinkable with a little decanting. Red/black/blue fruits medium finish. Always tasty and distinctive

Dark red. Nicr nose of dark dusty cherries, smoke and mocha. Seems pretty forward with a bit of dusty tannins. Very pleasing.

Decanted for 2.5 hours then drank over the next 1.5. At the start it was really easy drinking all the flavors were nicely integrated and smooth. Towards hour 4 it had lost a little something.

A bit closed up with cherries and mineral on the nose. Full and fruity with chocolaty flavours and firm, ripe tannins; long, toasty finish. Best after a few more years.
4/5
