  • 2007 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard

popped, poured off a small glass, and into the decanter then consumed over 5 hours.

there was impressive structure even at this older age. but alas there was a slight bit of cork taint. it wasn’t enough to ruin the bottle, but enough to limit the enjoyment. what i did get was black cherry, some cherry liqueur, but nothing overwrought or hedonistic like napa cabs can be. just extremely balanced and structured. even with the cork taint i enjoyed it quite a bit. but i can’t rate it because of the flaw.

  • 2014 Samsara Grenache Larner Vineyard

pnp. light like a pinot, but amazing complexity on the nose and the palate. cherry cordial, sucrets lozenges, pickle juice?, some ember. the flavor profile is arresting. tannic yet bouncy. floral but loads of red fruit. i am enthralled. this is 93-95 points for me. it held up beautifully to a charcoal grilled steak, and continues to impress with every single sip. WOW

  • 2013 Aubert Chardonnay Eastside Vineyard

    pnp, consumed over 4 hours.

initial impressions were very promising with this one. somewhat of a strong-ish matchstick quality, but lean yet intriguing tropical fruits and butterscotch poking through in a lithe frame. swirling coaxed out the purity in the nose. in the mouth and through the finish, and initial zingy acidity that would surely settle in to balance to pure fruit.

but it didn't. the acidity poked out above all else, leaving a fuzzy feeling on the tongue like licking a 9v battery. it wasn't jarring, but it was anything but balanced. the fruit was there, but it couldn't outpace the sulfuric elements.

in all, this was a middling chardonnay that woefully fell short of my expectations. if scoring, 91-92 because it's still a very good wine just nothing as entrancing as i was hoping for. i can get chardonnay of similar quality but better balanced for 1/3 of the price.
