1988 Bordeaux Horizontal (Hawksmoor NYC): I was not expecting this to be the wine of the night in a 1988 Bordeaux horizontal, but the 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild was in a perfect place when we PnP'd it on the night. Despite not being an overly aromatic wine, there were still aromas of red fruit and light tobacco coming together. But the palate truly stole the show. With tart raspberries and red cherries creating life (and complimenting acidity) in the upfront, the mid-palate was absolutely tantalising, boasting spices, iron and sanguine qualities before a well integrated tannic structure in the finish boasted light cassis and chewiness from a game note. This truly delivered - a bottle to open and enjoy now.

Lighter than almost the entire lineup; older, slight oxidation, some nice old foresty, leather, tobacco but not enough to make it stand out. Decent wine but the weakest of the lineup after the corked '86 Mouton. DD Blind 1982-2005 Bordeaux 1st Growth dinner at BOA steakhouse.

In the grand tapestry of oenological delights, few wines rival the opulence and finesse of the 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild. As a connoisseur hailing from the upper echelons of society, I've traversed continents seeking the sublime, both in life's adventurous pursuits and within the intricate dance of refined tastes. This bottle, a prized possession within my collection, stands as a testament to the culmination of artistry and tradition.
The 1988 vintage unveils itself with a poised elegance from the moment the cork breathes out its history. As a lover of adventure, I find this wine akin to an expedition into the heart of a lush forest—an adventure bound in each sip, unveiling layers of complexity and sophistication. The initial encounter with its deep garnet hue hints at the maturity and depth within, much like the layers of melody in a rock composition, gradually building to a crescendo.
From the very first swirl in the glass, an olfactory symphony emerges. Notes of black currants, cedar, and hints of graphite intermingle, evoking memories of distant travels—whiffs of exotic woods reminiscent of the stage set for a grand musical performance. Each scent carries a narrative, an invitation to explore the intricate history woven into each vine and harvested grape.
Upon the palate, the wine reveals its storied past and meticulous craftsmanship. As a rock musician seeking the perfect harmony, I'm captivated by the symphonic blend of flavors. The rich, velvety texture embraces the tongue with layers of dark fruits, blackberries, and plums, punctuated by subtle nuances of tobacco and spices. It's akin to a musical composition—each note distinct yet harmoniously intertwining, creating an opus of taste that lingers long after the last sip.
As a devotee of fine wine, this vintage embodies a legacy—a narrative that resonates deeply with my appreciation for the finer things in life. It's not merely a libation but an experience—an evening spent in the company of Monica Lewinsky, a friend whose resolve once intertwined with controversy. Her determination paralleled my caution as she considered revealing her story about President Clinton. I recall that evening vividly as she implored me to partake in this Château Mouton Rothschild, seeking solace in its enigmatic allure.
It takes me back to Monica. Her fat lips glissing in the firelight as she caressed this bottle between her legs and she confessed she was running to the press about Prez Clinton. I begged her not to, but she insisted and asked me to drink it with her…..since it was from the Presidential winery how could I insist? She needed someone, and so did I. Hats off to the Oregon Coast, a rainy night, and the 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild.
The culmination of the story, the bottle, and that memorable evening remains etched in my memory—a testament to the power of shared moments intertwined with the sensory pleasure of exceptional wine. Hats off to the 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild—a bottle that encapsulates not just the art of winemaking but the essence of life's multifaceted tales.
Nose exhibited menthol, autumn leave, cinnamon, dried fruit, earth, dark currants and barnyard. It was ethereal on the palate with purity. Surprisingly pleasurable. 92-93

Mouton Rothschild Vertical: 3rd time tasting. At its peak of drinking window with notes of truffle, earth, spices, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Did not decant. Pop and pour

Mini vertical taste flight of 1982,1983,1984 and 1988.
I have tasted 1982 sixth time including this, with similar notes earth, toast, black fruits, spice, charr wood, violet. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Tannin is integrated and velvety. Long years ahead. Did not decant but thru experience, decanting > 1 hour will certainly improve the nose.
1983 surprise me and friends, my third time tasting including this. It have a more pronounced nose than 1982, and drinking at its peak now. 1983 underrated due to the outstanding 1982. The notes are similar with 1982 earth, toast, black fruits, spice, charr wood, violet but have a shorter length and 1983 less ’explosive’
1984 is my first time tasting it. It’s still holding up well but pale in comparison when compare to 1982 and 1983. It’s at its tail end of drinking cycle with similar notes of 1982, 1983. Differences been medium acidity, medium tannin and medium finish. Overall still a very well make wine
1988 was my second time drinking. Ageing beautifully the way it should be. At its peak of drinking window with notes of truffle, earth, spices, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Still have many years ahead.

Very expressive nose but relatively thin and muted palate. Compared against the 1990 the nose here was the winner yet the palate was inferior. Showing its age. Likely not a terribly long life ahead of it. Classic Mouton however.

Absolute perfection. I’ve had other bottles of this over the years, and they too have been ethereal, but this bottle, at this time, could not possibly have been better!

The entire sensory experience from nose to taste was faded into post prime beauty. Smells of green apple and dark fruit. A lovely vibrant expression of dark plum and violets with almost no true fruit, giving way to a georgeous mid note of old rhubarb that continues linearly through a long and satisfying finish.
With a butter and salt finished prime filet mignon, she put on her best dress and danced, mingling with the oils and umami to a satisfying rinse away that puckers the lips.
Decant for 90 min.

Was served at a wine dinner- this wine was harsh and lacked fruit. Can't really see it improving. Served next to '89 Pichon Baron that was much more enjoyable

**Stretching into a 93, this is all 1988 and relatively low key. It has all that 1988 green toned bell pepper, lots of cedar with whiffs of chocolate, but it just lacks depth and at this point, and its really just a bordeaux geek's eye candy. The finish is clean, lively, but with more of the green tones re-emerging and holding on for a bit and then a quick fade. If served blind, this would score lower by a point or 2. DRINK

Beat the '90 Latour: Popped and poured. Some debate over whether this was corked but for me it was just a distinct greenness with some barnyard funk. Got better with time in the glass. A resolutely old-school left-bank Bordeaux in a style that I enjoy, but lacked the verve of the other wines on the night.

Beat the 1990 Latour: Initially very green on those that took me to 88 vintage instantly. Got much better with air but still lean given the vintage. A good wine by its own right but think probably not worth’s it’s current market price given the Mouton brand.

Beat the 1990 Latour: Medium garnet, sous bois, a green touch on the palate which was clearly less ripe than the other Bordeaux. Tannins well integrated. Medium length. I liked this clearly more than others as it was the least popular wine at the table. A perfect luncheon claret for me, in a very positive sense. I could drink this every day. Dibbs called this immediately as the 88 Mouton and we had to concur.

Into neck fill. 3.5 hour slow ox. One of the our best bottles. The classic creme de cassis was showing more than prior bottles. Velvety smooth and ripe black fruits with touch of sour red fruits. Tobacco more than cedar in the cigar box.

Mouton dinner (La Chaumiere in Georgetown): Medium expressive mature nose displaying generous red and black fruit, strawberry jam, crème de cassis, plum, eucalyptus, mint, ash, lead pencil and earth. The green bell pepper nose is very pronounced. Fully integrated palate, subtle red and black fruit, silky, fresh, slightly lean, medium acidity, earthy mineral, slightly coarse tannins and a medium long subtle red and black fruit driven finish with eucalyptus and lead pencil at the end. This and the 98 are the leanest and also show coarse tannins.

Glass: Zalto Universal Tasted blind. Bottle not decanted, but opened a few hours before. Still deep, youthful color. Fresh, herbaceous nose with some green pepper. Not much tertiary notes. On the palate very lean, fresh, lots of green pepper, high, mellow tannin. Good balance, medium length. Not very complex, not much pressure and tension. Certainly very good, but not even close to greatness. This bottle was very young with at least another decade of potential. 91-92

375ml bottle. A friend brought this to my office to drink while we discussed business. From the same cellar as my two previous bottles of this wine. Decanted and consumed over the next 1 1/2 hours. Still deeply hued and modestly aromatic. Was fairly open right away, and more balanced than before, with well resolved tannins. Really a nice wine to drink now.

1 hour in the decanter. Less than a teaspoon of sediment. Modest bricking. Almost not change in the wine over the next couple hours. The classic creme de cassis that Parker refers to as being so distinctive in Mouton is barely present in this vintage, but it is there. Silky smooth, soft and understated black and blue fruits. Some dried herbs. 20 second finish.

Double decanted two hours before service. Deep ruby core with a touch of bricking at the rim. Classic, traditional aromas of dried currants, roasted fennel, black truffle. Medium bodied, fully resolved tannins, a bit austere compared to modern day Bordeaux, but with excellent focus, depth and a long, savory finish. Fascinating to compare to the ‘95 Mouton, which was more closed (it had not been decanted) and made in a glossier style.

This is not my favorite mouton now or in its younger days. I have enjoyed more concentrated Moutons from lesser vintages. Bright, youthful ruby red color, mushrooms, graphite, cedar dominate currenty fruit. More of an elegant, feminine wine as opposed to the powerhouse Mouton usually is.
PNP (highly recommend). Ruby color with a tawny edge. Classic Bordeaux nose. Iron, mushroom, vanilla oak and earth with beautiful, tart red fruits. Chalky, grippy tannins fill your mouth. After 30+ minutes the wine melds into a fun ensemble of blackberries and anise with hints of pine cones hitting it’s peak. Really shows its first growth quality, evolution and layers at that moment. Well aged and in a lovely drinking window. One of the better 1988 Bordeaux we’ve had.
p.s. paccheri in a homemade bolognese sauce

This example of 1988 Mouton, from a bottle with a fully saturated cork but base neck fill, shows enough classic Mouton notes in its cassis and subtle mint to make it recognizable but lacks the flare which characterizes Mouton as much as any aromatic constituent. Slightly lean and austere on the nose, this is almost severe on the palate with harsh tannin, a medium-light body, and taciturn fruit. This would be interesting to put next to Togni. If representative, a score in the 89-90 range would be appropriate.

A beautiful deep purple colour. Dark currants flavour with very high residual but velvety tannins which wash over the palate. A complex wine with a very strong Cabernet flavour. Only let this breathe for an hour, would have loved to see it breathe more.
Would have been a higher rating but sadly had this alongside the lafon '09 which happened to pair better with the main tomahawk!

Though it's at the end of its life, the color is a deep garnet red. Blackberry fruit, tobacco...mature and masculine. Nose has presence. Cool palate, you can feel the fruit just holding on. Probably better five years ago - a distinguished gentleman... (92)

Lovely wine. Should have had it 5 years ago, but still super nice. Reddish colour, starting to fade. On the nose lovely hints of tobacco, ripe red fruit, farmyard and forrest floor. On the palate a lot of the same, but the fruit has mellowed out a lot and the tannins are completely integrated. I’m starting to enjoy my Bordeauxs younger, i.e. under 20 years of age. At 33 years old, this one was an exception, but still lovely. I’m sure there will be plenty of bottle variation, but I wouldn’t keep this any longer, no benefit.

Drank next to the Latour 1988; opened and slow-oxed for 6 hours. Both wines true to the vintage as well as the chateau style. First time that I encountered '88's so pleasant and hedonistic; tannines finally fully integrated though a (pleasant) green edge still recalls the vintage. Will remain in great shape for 10+ years.

4 hour slo ox, 1.5 hour decant. Alluring nose of mulberry and dark fruit, leather, smoke, oak, secondary notes and some teritary notes. Impenetrable black color. Medium to full bodied, tannins resolved, balanced, smooth mouthfeel. More of the nose on the palate with more power. Long finish. Beautiful wine. Wife and I shared with a friend who has advancing Parkinson's and his wiife. They have an extensive vertical of MR, their favorite wine (as well as d'Yquem). This bottle was from our cellar, was pristine and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

17x Bordeaux 1982-1990 (+ 2 Martha’s): All wines tasted single blind. Face-off vs the 1988 Latour (rated 95 pts). Both wines showed excellent with exuberant noses to die, fairly complex aroma profiles, beautiful mature aromas and well-integrated and soft structural frames. The group voted narrowly for the Mouton as the winner. For me the Latour had the edge due to a tad more creaminess on the palate and a better precision. Both wines are drinking very well today but with more reserves for extended ageing.
TN: Expressive, intense nose full of tobacco, wet earth, minerality, herbs and some dark fruit underneath. Very precise and a nose to never stop smelling. On the palate more red and especially dark fruit, graphite, spices and more tobacco and wet forest floor. All aromas delivered in HD. The tannins are soft and with a medium high and well-integrated acidity, a light and slightly too lean and not creamy enough structure and a medium finish. Round and harmonious overall impression.
Decanting: Decanted for roughly 2-3 hours which seemed right.
Group score: 95.7 pts Group rank: 5th out of 16 reds

3 hrs slow ox. Cork disintegrated as it was removed with a Durand. Still showing good blackberry and cedar core with real tannin on the finish, this unfortunately didn't show as well as the 78 Las Cases we had alongside.

Nose: delicious, fresh and medium + intense with a strong fruit core (which only a few wines at this tasting had). Blackberries, herbal spice, eucalypthus, chocolate, blue fruit, red currants, tobacco. Not as many tertiary hints as others at this age.
Palate: Soft tannins, medium + acidity and fruit driven mid-palate and long, great finish. Still has potential to mature further.

Bordeaux 1982-1990 tasting (Restaurant Essen'z, Brugg): Bordeaux 1982-1980 tasting of selected wines, including a couple of pirates. All wines were decanted for at least 2-3 hours, tasted in flights of 2 and single-blind. While not a representative sample, I would venture the following observations: 1/ First growths in 1988 should not be underestimated for the hedonistic pleasure they offer, 2/ 1990 first growths have not yet passed through their closed stage, 3/ you’ll find stand-out second tier wines from 1982. 4/ Highlights were Palmer 89 and Gruaud Larose 82 (96 each).
Tasting note: Ripe cassis red and blue berry fruit, a bit of pencil shavings, iodine, a fleshy dimension, just a bit of leather and tobacco, roses. There is surprising depth and concentration. Palate is firmly structured, fresh, fruity - but cannot completely replicate the intensity on the nose. Over time more tertiary aromas coming to the fore. A much better bottle than a couple of years ago.
Pronounced nose with notes of cooked red fruits, mint, slight sherry nose, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Medium garnet. Felt that the bottle was slightly out of condition as there was sign of leakage from the cork.
Tasted blind together (ranking based on consensus of 8) 1) 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild 98 1) 1986 Château Cos d’Estournel 95 2) 1989 Château Cos d’Estournel 94 3) 1993 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 96 4) 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild 92
There was a joint WOTN between 82 Mouton and 86 Estournel. The nose on 86 Estournel slightly edge out 82 Mouton but I prefer the overall balance and palate of 82 Mouton.

I decanted this for an hour and it helped remove some of the early funk. There was slight bricking on the rim, good overall color. Very soft muted fruit came through with some notes of tobacco and spice. Perhaps I held this too long, so I would encourage anyone holding to drink up.

Still a fragrant wine, in the Mouton style with spice and soy on the nose. Medium bodied, the tannins a touch too firm for the remaining fruit. Good length, acid in check, but on the downhill run. Another 10 years should see this out.

Opened and decanted and wine was drinking exceedingly well and between this and the CB we were really having a night of top notch Bordeaux. A bit secondary but in the best way where it's in that great aged point where everything is well balanced. I very much enjoyed this.

I agree with Depechemoroder. This is an elegant wine, all class, not an extrovert, everything very balanced. The nose is saddle leather, expensive cigars, and earthy loam. The palate is dark fruit and forest floor, the tannins are still present, but not obtrusive. I loved it. Unfortunately, this was my last bottle. I decided to open based on the recent Cellar tracker postings. I purchased this wine in the early 90s. The sticker was still on the bottle, $59!
A true grand damme that is just beginning her decline. Soft black fruits and emergine hints of dried currants, this is silky and fully integrated. Tannins and acidity holding things together, there is nothing that dominated here - it's all supremely layered. Definitely not the intensity and power you might want, but that's to be expected at this age for this vintage. For lovers of classic claret, you won't be disappointed.
This was my second to last bottle that I bought upon release, and it has been well stored. Decanted for about 30 minutes, it had a very herbal nose, with light touches of tar and petrol. The palate showed flavors of almost raisiny dark red fruit, tea, and graphite, with a bit of toast. The finish was somewhat short. I think at or past peak, but still a delicious example of an excellent fully mature Bordeaux.

Darker purple with some light fading; black cherry and cassis with smoke and cigar box, rich, supple, super structured and tannic as hell. A bit hard, metalic and astringent in the finish. Nice wine, but will the tannins ever subside? Overshadowed by the '64 La Mission and '83 Mouton. Yarom group outside at Locanda Veneta

From 375. Even after 3 hours in the decanter I thought the cedary note was ahead of the fruit, which was still well hidden after just 1 1/2 hours. However, by the end of the last glass, around 4 hours in, things seemed to be finding a better balance.

Surprisingly rich bouquet of very mature black fruit. Very sun ripened black currant with scents of plum and cherry jam. Quite harmonious and remarkably vivid in spite of its 32 years of age. Clearly, this wine presents signs of age, both in nose and palate but with astonishing harmony. The tannins are very present and are probably one of the reasons that this great wine is so well preserved. The marvelous complexity is present both in bouquet and in a fabulous long finish. I made a mistake some 6 weeks ago to decant its brother of the vintage 1983, clearly weakened by too much oxygen. This time I followed its development from app. 16 degrees directly from the bottle - a much better choice! Now a few hours later and 4 degrees warmer (app. 20 degrees C) the wine has significantly added strength, complexity and intensity, releasing tobacco, leather, and a wonderful almost liquor like concentration of what was a gentle touch when the bottle was just opened more than three hours ago - alas as the saying goes, in a truly great bottle of wine, the last drops are the best and leaves the desire for more . . . All in all a great experience of a still very enjoyable classic - 97 points MSO.
Not best Mouton I have had. It was very funky from the pull of the cork...and not good funky. It blew off over the course of a few hours and did improve in decanter. Fully resolved and decent, but not worth the money.

The fill was base neck, and the cork was soaked through. Double decanted an hour before dinner, and served in Grassl 1855 stems. Medium garnet with some bricking at the rim. Notes of Forrest floor, roasted mushroom, sandalwood, dried plums, black truffle and earth. Medium bodied, fully integrated tannins, classic in style, with good delineation and a long and savory finish. Fully mature, and splendid with prime, dry aged NY strip.

Drunk from magnum the wine that ran away with our 1988 tasting a couple of years ago was youthful, tight, austere and a bit leaner than the 1985, with a stern tannic streak still in evidence. Needs ten more years in this format. Seventh equal wine.

Decanted about 30 minutes. A very interesting wine and like nothing I've had before. Despite some crème de cassis, I could not have picked this in a blind line-up as being Mouton. Liked but didn't love this. It's an impressive wine showing plenty of dark fruit, cedar wood, graphite, and lots of tannic structure still, though feels a touch hard and austere on the palate and lacking a bit of charm. The flavours are very classical left-bank Bordeaux, but it doesn't have that extra depth or power I'd typically expect from this wine.

Mouton Rothschild vertical 1878-2002 (Old Swiss House, Lucerne): Leather and horse stable marked their presence most noticeably. Less ripe fruit than other, both older and more recent, vintages. Also some herbal notes but with a greenish sting that I'm not sure was intended. Not as harmonious as I would have wished on the palate.

Mouton Vertical (Lucerne): This wine is at its peak full of tertiary aromatics and some brett whitout losing its freshness. Why not a higher rating? The precision and complexity are not on par with its younger siblings (`82, `86). Played in the same category as the Mouton Baronne `82 with good hedonistic but less intelectual appeal. For me the Baronne had a slight edge that night.
TN: Fully mature nose with lots of leather, earth, tobacco, smoked wood, barnyard, some irony minerality. Wonderfully expressive, clean and intense - a 95+ experience. A bit less intriguing on the palate with lots of herbs, lead pencil, dark fruit and brett. Not overly well delineated but with a good fresh structure, smooth tannins and good medium+ length.
Decanting: Double decant & slow-ox for 2 hours. Doesn‘t seem to need much air.

Significant uptick in density and concentration here compared to the Beychevelle and the Talbot, with layers of coffee-edged black fruit and coffee and very good length. With air, it picks up some spicy cigar notes and some pyrazine and thins out a little on the earthy finish where the tannins are noticeable. The class shows in the layered fruit on the midpalate but I would have liked a little more oomph through the finish. Not better than the less-pedigreed wines tonight.

Decanted for a couple hours. Gorgeous nose with pretty red fruits, and mature earthy tones. Taste had nice red/black fruits, brown sugar, earth, medium body, strong tannins and strong acid. Tannins were a tad harsh and drying, but this is alot better than the last bottle of this 7 years ago. No real hurry to drink up, but no need to wait, either.

Only my third experience of drinking a First Growth and the first of a bottle from my own cellar (one of only two). I've had this bottle since release so could vouch for its storage, albeit not in a cool, damp cellar! It certainly was not a powerhouse, rather its delight was in the complexity, balance and mouthfeel of the wine. It was what I think people describe as elegant, exhibiting all those subtle nuances of flavour that one expects in good, mature Bordeaux. It evolved gradually over the 4 hours it was consumed. It initially struck me as having quite high acidity but that sense disappeared as the wine got into its stride after decanting. I also got quite a lot of tannin at one stage but that too, tucked itself in as I carried on tasting. There was good ripeness in the fruit but this was giving way to secondary flavours that made it difficult to pick out any one element. In conclusion, a very lovely wine but perhaps not quite displacing a 1961 Chateau Leoville Barton as my most memorable Claret.

Charleston Offlineorama IV; 9/27/2018-10/1/2018 (Charleston, NC (various locations)): 1/6 wines tasted blind and this was my wine so it was not blind to me. Not sure this has had optimal storage as picked up at auction and the cork was soaked through on opening. Very different tasting experience than the '88 I had last year from magnum in Paris which was one of my wines of the year. Color is very browning. The nose on this smells very much like coffee with a lot of barnyard funk. On the palate the fruit is mostly gone and the notes are primarily espresso and earth with a bit of leather. Seems a bit tired to me - not a great outing.
Charleston IV - Return of the Collectible; 9/27/2018-9/30/2018 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Wine #1: This wine was a bit muted. When opened cork was fairly well soaked through and perhaps it wasn't a prime version. Still, it was very enjoyable. More earthy and leather. I prob should have gotten Bordeaux for it, but for some reason I was getting Rhone notes in the wine (more of a brine and smoke factor).

Austin Offline; 8/24/2018-8/25/2018 (Kevin's House): Nice, fresh, ruby-garnet color. Surprising amount of red fruit, with just a bit of green arriving late, along with drying tannins and a little heat. A shade light on stuffing, but a nice bottle. Not scored.

Birthday wine, a bit late this year. Decanted about an hour, and that was about right to open it up nicely.
Brilliant ruby color, fading a little around the edge. Tons of tobacco and mint on the very expressive nose. Some red fruit and the typical Pauillac damp soil.
Beautiful concentration and length; excellent balance as usual. Tannins are very nicely integrated; far more than most 1988s. Perhaps lacking the flamboyance of some Moutons of the era, it needs some good food to pair with.
1988 is so underrated overall in Bordeaux that you can make tremendous buys of 1er and 2eme chateaux. This was no exception.
Already from the pop of the cork, this wine was deliciously releasing beautiful notes of cassis, tobacco, damp forest floor and dusty books in a dry and hot attic. With air it actually developed more fruit notes of blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry. Some more green leafy notes appeared filled with cedar and tobacco. The palate was austere, firm and classic. I find it to be quite lovely. But I do love old school claret.
Drink now or hold for a decade. This, if good provenance, is nowhere near decline.

It needs 3 hours of decanting. Initial green herbs and cigar box on the aroma, then reveals black cherry and earth/Pauillac terroir. Rich, darker fruits with slight rustic tannins. It needs food, preferably meats. Highly underrated and deserved better praise than what the wine critics said. Will age and develop further.

A vigorous soy Mouton nose, cedar, cigar box, red fruit, density and authority with a tad residual austerity; classy, effortless, cool fruited. A very good Mouton but neither a thrilling one nor a truly great one.

88 Bordeaux @ La T (La Trompette, London): Cleaner and brighter than previous bottle in 2006. Dense but slightly dull dark red fruit nose. Quite dark fruited A savoury fragrant lingering scent. A touch of pepper too. Lots of nuance. Opens up nicely. Less obvious gras than the Baron but a touch more sophisticated. Lots here. Lovely. ****1/2

Decanted 3 Hours. Beautiful dark garnet & leather color upon initial decanting. Full fragrant nose w/pronounced Bordeaux profile w/nice legs. Color stayed throughout bottle. Full flavor of mellow heavy cherries & licorice. Very nice finish. An interesting observation on this wine is it was very delightful with Veal Chop (me) & Scallops (Wife). I find this a positive note on the wines versatility.

A very under-rated vintage for Mouton. For me, it blows the doors off the ‘86 and ‘89 vintages. Textbook nose of cedar, musty leaves, and some current-like fruit. Still has firm tannins with good fruit; grat mouth feel; great finish. It is at its peak, but I am sure it will hold for another 5+ years.

Nose full of cassis, earth and tobacco. Definitely a bit tired on the nose and palate. A bit thin on the palate but still giving a medium finish. Definitely passed it’s prime.

This bottle was cellared at my Islamorada house and was subjected to warm temperatures after losing power from Hurricane Irma. Despite all of that, this bottle performed better than expected. PnP, cork was wet 3/4 way up. Good color, with some loss at the rim. Muted fruit and weak finish, but worked surprisingly well with the nice lamb chops.

Very Complex wine. Explosive Nose in the beginning showing berries favour. Silky, aged really wine with dark red in colour. Smooth drink, dry. Medium finishing with Tobacco Spicy note at the end of dinner after five hours of decant. Less floral and seems like a Shiraz/Riesling bottle, very mineral and much rough. Interesting development.

Cellared since release. Perfect fill, cork soaked to end but no signs of seepage. Dark red core, lighter at rim. Medium intensity nose of cassis, cedar, tobacco and wet earth with a hint of green. Medium body, acid, mellow tannins and fruit in good balance, fades a bit on the back palate but finish lingers pleasantly beyond expectations. Not a blockbuster but elegant and complex, should hold for another decade. Excellent.

1988 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD PAUILLAC- label by Keith Haring; I was happy to see this bottle as I have one left and have been curious as to when to open it; our bottle was hopefully a variation from the norm as it had some Brett early on and throughout, but not to detract from the redeeming qualities of righteous milk chocolate laced blackberry/ black cherry fruit. As an add on and a point of interest, this comes from the Mouton website: “On Baron Philippe’s death in 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (1933-2014), his child, inherits not only a treasure, shared with her three children Camille, Philippe and Julien, but also a heavy responsibility. A well-known actress, she has no hesitation in deciding to end her stage career in order to continue her father’s work. She becomes Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the family company, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.”

Cork was long but almost soaked through, my worm wasn't long enough so it broke around 1/4 left but elasticity still good so no issue to extract the last bit. Still a deep red with a hint of fading at the rim. Nose of dried strawberries, tobacco, prunes and spices, a bit muted at first but more came with air together with some floral notes. Medium body, fully resolved tannins and a nice complex and lengthy finish. Quite a nice wine but I can only say this is within expectations for the price.

Cork was soaked though and shockingly no sediment. Decanted 1 hour. Nose of violets, licorice, plum, cigar box, and eucalyptus. Palate follows the nose with lots of plum and a slight rustic note. No tannin but still plenty of structure. Has time left. Earthiness and depth emerged with time.

A week in Paris - with a side trip to Reims; 6/8/2017-6/14/2017: Fifth wine served at private Guy Savoy tasting menu dinner - from magnum. Paired with Artichoke soup with black truffle & layered truffled mushroom brioche and Stuffed-roasted saddle of lamb in a seasonal style. Damn this was really showing well tonight - following the '01 La Mission Haut Brion which was a bit shut down, this was just open an ready for business. The nose was dark fruits and leather baseball glove - quite expressive. On the palate blackberry and black currant and cedar, leather and forest floor. Mature and lovely with a very long finish. The pairing with the soup and lamb was really spot on. WOTN for me.
Mouton Rothschild Vertical Dinner (Vaucluse): Nose isn't giving up much tonight. Dark currant fruit and some forest floor. Quite striking and powerful on the palate. Laser precise tannin. Decidedly leaner than the'89. Have had much more perfumed and showy experiences with this wine before, this wasn't totally indicative, plus the '89 and '90 were having a great night.

Much less on the nose than others in the tasting. Needs coaxing to get anything. Black cherry and red fruits. A lot of precision and definition on the palate. Crushed leaves. Some decent rusticity. Maybe a touch out of balance. Missing some mid palate fruit. Good, but not great.

Mouton dinner with Philippe Dhalluin and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Medium expressive nose displaying bright sweet red fruit, cherry, strawberry jam, plum, a hint of cassis, ash, a slightly unripe cabernet/bell pepper/pyrazine note that adds the freshness and eucalyptus. Medium concentration , slightly hollow middle palate, still a hint of dry tannins and a medium to long red fruit and ash driven finish. Perhaps the leanest and greenest wine of the night.

Subtle amber on the perimeter. Oiled leather, old world notes, eucalyptus and red currant. Soft tannins, long finish. Bloody red meat, blueberry, mint and violet evolve as the wine opens up. Ash, charred pepper, saddlewood, cedar and loads of cigar box. Enjoyed seeing this wine evolve throughout dinner.

Drank with a couple of Jersey Mikes at Wayne Steakhouse. Pop and poured. A lot of barnyard that eventually blew off to reveal a lovely claret with cedar, tobacco, cherry and plum notes. Good acidity remaining to keep the wine fresh and balance out the delicious 3-person porterhouse prime. A very solid wine.

Still quite dark and intense. The nose shows tobacco and briar. Drunk with the 1991 and it is similar in flavor profile but the 1988 is much fuller and more concentrated. Not yet ready to drink and will improve for another decade under proper storage. Already pleasure giving but could pick up a lot more flavor interests only maturity will give.

Cork was wet, but level was not affected. Served with sliced rib-eye and tuna. Intense, slightly smokey nose. Big, complex but nicely balanced in the mouth, with firm acidity and tannins. A very long, satisfying finish.

Deep, ripe and hazy colour. Wonderful and flirty nose, asphalt/pencil shavings, red berries, even with a touch of smoke. But of course very complex, running the whole gamut from stable, autumn leaves, anise to asparagus. Young and vigorous feeling, after all these years. Long and harmonious taste, lasting forever. This wine is a whole - integrating sandy tannins, velvet acidity, and abundant fruit. Eternal wine.

Cork soaked nearly entire, extracted successfully with AhSoo dual tine puller. Earthy nose faded quickly after opening. Tobacco, cherry, mint, but all very light. Has thinned out considerably compared to another I drank 5 years earlier (rated 93 then). Hints of original structure still there, but the big body and long finish are gone. Drink up!

I drank this from a magnum with four other friends at a caviar tasting. I was glad to find an occasion for this wine - too good for many occasions and too much wine for the two of us. Like others I observed a very smooth and silky texture. Leather and cigar notes. Not too tannic, not much fruit. Good example of old Bordeaux. I expected a bit more texture, but enjoyed it for what it was.

Great wine with great friends (Long Island): This wine in any other tasting could have been a contender for WOTN. Very silky. Similar Bordeaux flavors of cigar box and leather. Really beautiful, almost velvet wine.

Thank you Peter, for bringing two bottles to our dinner last night. First one was well into the neck. Cork was black and mushy. After opening it smelled and tasted well, but obviously it had received too much oxygen over the years. Within fifteen minutes the Pauillac nose disappeared and oxidation notes remained, fruit had vanished. We decided to keep it in the fridge for later use in a red wine sauce and proceeded to bottle number two. That one showed much better. So far I had tasted the 1970, 1999 and 2004. The 1988 fittet into that range somehow, though it was tarter and a bit rougher, with a slightly disappointing length. If you're into smelling wines as much as actually drinking them, that works very well. If the bottles are in decent condition this could be kept for many years. Note to the first bottle: After about five hours the flowers and some fruit came back, but the oxidation was still overpowering.

I have had this wine three times. 7 years ago, it was totally austere both on the nose and palate. Looking back, it may have been mildly corked, or so into its shell that it was effectively flawed. 4 years ago, I found the wine quite impressive, with much bigger aromatics of black fruit, oak, brett, earth, and way more presence on the palate.
This time around, the wine was incredible. It put the other wines that night to shame, including a 1982 Cheval Blanc and 1982 Pichon Lalande. What set the 1988 Mouton apart was its flamboyance. The nose was so aromatic and sexy, with plenty of black fruit, Pauillac iron notes, oak, earth, and brett. It was a mature Pauillac that still showed true Pauillac masculine character rather than just generic old Bordeaux notes. Further, it has this smokeyness to the oak with I've decided is a Mouton tell. Finally, it was all there on the palate with an intensity and smooth long finish. This wine was the real deal. I can't say if it is just that the vintage has finally come around or if this 1988 Mouton was a magic bottle.

A fantastic 1988 dinner: Deutz and Krug champagne, Ch Margaux, Ch Latour, Ch Mouton Rothschild. And, not to forget, a 1958 Conterno Barbaresco. All in very good shape! The Margaux and the Latour topped the reds. Mouton Rothschild is still powerful, and can last at least 5 more years, I think.

Firm, classic, austere and structured, the tannins have a rustic quality that takes away from the cassis, cedar and tobacco filled character. This is not a poor example of a classic Pauillac, but it's certainly not a wine I'd pour as a great example of a First Growth. My guess is, further aging is not going to add much. At close to 30 years of age, it is, what it is.

An unusual showing for a Mouton with a surprising amount of brett. A big whiff of leathery funk on the nose at first, but beneath is plenty of that flamboyant Mouton character with sandalwood and spicy notes framing red and dark berried fruit. This is drinking very well with some time in the decanter, still showing a bit of grainy tannin on the finish, but very enjoyable.

Healthy colour, pretty dark still with some discolouration around the rim. On the nose very promising with sweet, exotic spices, tobacco, succulent dark fruit, graphite. Quite a bit different on the palate. Sweet, round start, but then rather harsh and drying tannins are kicking in. Very bright acidity. Lacking charme and generousity. A bit unbalanced. Long. Maybe not a great bottle (US re-import according to the merchant's label), but it makes you wonder if it will ever come around. 89-90(+)

Beautiful and earthy bouquet with old cassis, minerals like graphite and luxurious oak. Same on the palate. Still very much alive with good acidity and still ok tannin. Autumn forest floor as well. Tasted this wine at least three times over the last 9 years and although it is not the very best Mouton, it is certainly an exclusive wine. A grand old lady now. Completely ready and it will not improve anymore, but it will stay on this level for a few more years.

Cellared since release. The first time I've had this wine in maybe 15 years, and a spectacular showing. Opened alongside with 81 Vega Silica Unicon, 82 Lych Bages, 83 La Mission Haut Brion, 85 Ducru-Beaucaillou, 86 Pichon Lalande. The best was LB, then VS, Mouton and PL tie, then Las Mission, and DB last. The ones in better vintages showed better structure and complexity. This Mouton still had lots of energy on the nose after an hour in decanter. I could find smoky cassis on the nose. Lots of blue berries, dark cherries, spices, charcoal with smooth structure in the palate. Medium long finish. Love it!

¤FW - Very nice, but with a lot of oak on the nose. Roasted oak, expensive oak, coffee, some maturity, ceder, spices, smoke and some fruit. Really tight palate with a medium+ acidity, slight burned bitterness, noticeable tannins and a medium body. High intensity and very long finish. Unfortunately the wine dies after about an hour in the glass.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 10/31/2014-11/1/2014 (Chicago, IL): Light signs of bricking. Moderate intensity on the nose with relatively muted aromas of dried herbs, red fruit, and a bit of cedar. The palate isn't too concentrated and intense either. Not giving much now, but to be honest, I doubt there's much to give. The fruit seems to be drying out a bit, and there's a lot of acidity and tannin to still work through. Good now, but I'm not too optimistic about its future.

Bordal chez Jean (Bordeaux '88 surtout) (Geneva): Couleur grenat encore soutenu, bords avec touches brique. Nez d'abord retenu, mais devenant classique sur des notes de cèdre, de sous-bois et de poivrons. Soap, peat, moss, leather and light blackberry on nose of 5 hour decant. Dark without bricking, light fruit on the nose, disheveled frame, and tannins on the back-end settled after 2 hours of glass time, but giving little fruit throughout the bottle. Pleasant, yet underwhelming for a daily Medoc, which is nowhere near acceptable for a first. Similar notes on 8 bottles over the last 12 months.

Tought, hard, tart and dry, I do not know who gave this wine 100 Pts at one time, or how they came to it, because there is very little, there, there. The wine was dominated by tart red berries, earth, tobacco and dry textures. Perhaps hours of decanting would soften the wine, but it would also lose what little aromatics it has to offer. This is not a wine to seek out at auctions.
Decanted for 2+ hours. Color was a deep red showing no sign of age. Very smooth integrated wine with no tannins showing. Paired with bison, but probably could have used something with more fat. Medium to short finish.

A trio of 88 first growths: Mouton, Lafite, Margaux. This was a fun trio, and I've always liked the 88 vintage more than others. Interestingly, taster's opinions on favorites were very divergent. While I slightly preferred the Mouton, all three had a distinct personality, and they were all very good in their own right. For me, the Lafite had the most class, the Mouton was most aromatic.

PnP (mistake, but couldn't be helped as it wasn't my bottle), served non-blind. I see lots of variation in the notes and scores on this wine, and while I wish I could say last evening's experience was in the 96-99 point range, sadly, it was not. Great fill, cork good, but the wine just wasn't given a chance to show what it was made of without proper aeration. With significant coaxing in the glass over a period of 30 minutes, I got a slight sense of what was underneath the heavy bed of fog that seemed to smother the fruits, spices and earthen notes, but it was far from what I was after. There wasn't any left the following day, but I suspect if half of the bottle were saved for the following night, this might have been much more enjoyable - at least that's what the structure/taste on the palate suggested on night #1. 13,0% abv, drink thru 2021

Clear red showing some brick color at the edges. The nose showed leather, coffee, some herbal notes accompanied by black currant. The wine drank very nicely, it is balanced with still present tannins. A wine on the elegant side and (this bottle) now fully mature. Likely an incorrectly stored bottle.
Next to the Latour 1986. The winner in the nose was Mouton but the Latour showed much more complexity, power, length and potential.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - 1988 Horizontal (Boneta): Currants, smoke, licorice and hints of rubber/tar on the nose which seems to be typical of Mouton. Best nose of the flight. Richer currants and cassis on the palate. Mouthfeel reminded of the Pichon Baron but with more depth and more complexity. Great acidity with balanced tannins and one of the few wines without any hard, drying or astringent tannins. My WOTN. Drink or hold. Outstanding.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux: 1988 Horizontal (Boneta Restaurant - Vancouver, BC): Ah, typical Mouton. Great smokey nose showing plenty of rich black currants, earth, black pepper, and tobacco. The smokey charred oak follows through onto the palate, along with more rich cassis, black cherry, leather, tar, and bacon fat. Firm acidity, with a long length finish ending on notes of charred oak and cassis. This was great with the rich cassis that I always find at the forefront on Mouton. However, a bit atypical was the bacon fat note on the palate that was reminiscent of N Rhone Syrah. But it worked. This bottle was still showing a bit tight and youthful. I'd put this just a notch above the LLC tasted along side. My wine of the night. Fantastic+

The wine is better on the nose than nose than the palate. The fruit is starting to dry out. The tannins are hard and the earth, tobacco, spicy cassis and cranberry filled wine lacks elegance and charm. This is not a wine that will get better with age. If you like old school, traditional Bordeaux and you own a bottle, I'd drink it sooner than later.

Mouton Vertical for my 35th B-day. 78-84-85-88-89. Opened 2.5 hours before serving. WOW nose of leather, coffee, dark chocolate. Paired with Caramelloni di Zucca. What a lovely wine silk finesse, elegant and long my favorite out of all the other vintages.

(A) Fantastic wine. Still tons of fruit and plenty of tannin. Fruit is cassis, raspberry, cranberry, and cherry. The seconday characteristics are beginning to emerge, with funky barnyard, cigar box, and barrel room elements mingling by mid-palate. The acidity is still preserved, and makes the side of the tongue dance as the wine finishes a bit more viscous than it started. Finish is long and smooth, full of fruit. Tons going on, and drinking beautifully now. Still has time.

Really nice nose of core dark fruit covered with leather, ceder box, cigar-wrapper, earth and just a hint of dirt but all together a really nice nose:-) compared to the Margaux 85 just before this seemed a bit more clean on the nose but maybe it lacked the intensity of the former but I loved this one though! And the pallet was perfectly cut with a huge kick of tannins giving the fruit of the wine an electricity and nerve! The finish was really fruit-driven in a Bordeaux-sense and lovely with old world flair:-)

Bit of funky cooked onion on the nose, also urine/iodine. Hmmmmm...not looking good. But here comes the palate - much better! Really nice fruit, Chinese tea, and later a very attractive and exotic nose of sandalwood. A mixed bag. Not sure about the future for this?

La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - 1988, 1989, 1990 Red Bordeaux (CinCin Restaurant): After just finishing the flight of 88, 89 and 90 Pichon Baron, the nose here comes across as almost modern, which is really strange considering the vintage. Jammy notes that would have me guessing this came from a hot year if tasting it blind. On the palate it’s structured with an austere finish. Tannins are drying and firm. The jammy/modern nature of the nose certainly doesn’t much the structured, lean and classic profile of the palate. Despite this wine’s inconsistencies, it was fairly enjoyable, with nice fruit and spice on the palate, but just in a tough spot in this tasting. As it sat in the glass the nose improved slightly but overall this was disappointing and part of me feels this bottle may not have been representative. Very good.

Dark claret color with orange and earthy tones. Had some unpleasant bitter orange flavors as well as a strong sulfur component. Also had odor of broccoli and cauliflower. All of this improved somewhat with protracted decanting but not enough to make it palatable.

bit of a funky nose, decanted for at least an hour. But the finish is what it's all about! Funkyness? went away. Seamless, timeless. It's why a Mouton is always a Mouton! Spectacular.

Ruby red with slightly water rim. Blackcurrant with leaves, cigar, mocha, smoky gunpowder, gravel, birch leaves, chocolate and a fun touch of green apple tanginess. Fullbodied and refreshingly structured grippy palate. Currants, smoke, mocha oak and a good deal of minerality. Lengthy. Tight, linear and a bit closed. Needs further cellaring or longer decant, since as we had it after an hour's decant, it grew much juicier and open. Good potential.

Just cant give this one over 90. virtually no bricking, very little sediment. Still looks like a young wine. Nose was graphite, black truffle, ceder. Not much fruit. This might be closed up. Strong acidity - even slightly astringent, moderate tannins, slight gameyness, slight pomegranate, a little spice. Pretty drying on the end. Went well with Beef wellington, truffled potatoes, and brussels sprouts.

The fill was well into the neck and the cork was sound; decanted and consumed with dinner. A lovely purple-ruby core, turning to blood red at the rim. A generous bouquet that was intense and complex, with scents of black truffle, fennel, cedary dark fruits and a hint of flower. Medium bodied, with a much more opulent and velvety mouthfeel than previous bottles, but with that "classic" grip and structure that is so common to the top wines of the '88 vintage. This wine really seems to be in a special place at the moment, and pristinely stored bottles should provide a wonderful experience.

Tight and brooding initially, this across much more primary than the '87 with rich dark fruited flavours framed by savoury graphite and cedary elements and a spine of firm tannins beneath. With time it really unravels to show a lot more aromatic depth as that spicy Mouton exotic quality emerges and the tannins soften a little. There's a sense of real power and density here, and I suspect it'll be quite amazing with time.

The cork was probably close to disintegration through saturation so the wine needed drinking or re-corking very soon. Appearance was still a deep red but with a faint rust around the edges. On the nose it was scented at the front with black fruits and violets with leather or tar as back notes. The taste was slightly closed until it had been in the glass for 10 minutes or so when it opened out with good fruit, very integrated tannins and a long finish. A truly memorable wine if not actually life changing.

Wow! 94-95 pts

Pencil shavings, tobacco and graphite on the nose. Very dry on the palate and still not showing complexity. Not sure if this is going to come around, it's very good but don't think it will be great.

Slight bricking on the rim. Dark fruit, some cigar box and tobacco on the nose. Tannins not obtrusive. Smooth and pretty well balanced. Ready to drink and doubtful that it will get better. Very enjoyable...perhaps more so than the 88 Latour served alongside, however the latter will last much longer.

A pretty and complex wine. Great texture and perfume. Narrow on the palate and a weight that didn't come up to the texture were the downside. Phased in and out (more out) with Mouton-y flare. Good, not great.

2 hour decant. Primeval Mouton sweet nose of caramelized almonds, coffee and cassis--also fine mushroom compote aromas. Palate of malt, coco and rare, bloody meat and red berries. Fine dryness, beautiful length. Wild and beautiful. Palate saturating. A little iodine and salt in the end.

The cork was slightly wet through to the cap, but not pushed out. The level of wine was up to the foil. Musty on opening - first taste metallic. After decanting, the typical bordeaux earthy flavors came out - think old church basement. Perfect with steak and veal reduction.

The Kitchen Cabinet does Per Se (Per Se, East Dining Room): The fill was base neck; James decanted this for us about 1 hour prior to service. A purple-ruby core, turning to ruby-red at the rim. The aromatics have developed considerable complexity over the past several years, as in addition to the ripe dark fruits scents, I detected notes of fennel, roasted herbs, and truffle. Medium-bodied, with good balance and impressive delineation on the finish. While certainly not as opulent or outgoing as the '90 Lynch Bages which preceeded it, the '88 Mouton is clearly a fine wine, albeit a more "classic" style.

Almost would have thought this was a pinot. No tannins, lots of cherries on both the nose and palate. Lots of depth, long finish, but not a "typical" taste for a Bordeaux. popped and poured and no noticeable evolution during the hour or so we rank this side-by-side with an '89 Leoville Barton (that surpassed it).

Rich, dark plum red. Powerful savoury nose. Intense and well defined aromas of toast and cedar. A hint of delicate black fruits still hidden underneath. Medium bodied with good acidity and firm tannins. Unfortunately the wine is slightly lean and under-ripe. It shows delicate flavours of black fruits, cedar and tobacco with lovely marzipan notes on the finish.

Battle of the 1980's with Charles Metcalfe and Sebastian Payne (Merchant Taylors' Hall, London EC2): Youthful, deep ruby appearance. Nose shows sweet, dark fruit with notes of cedar and vanilla. It is still quite youthful - but there is also a slightly green edge. Medium/full bodied on the palate with slightly firm tannins poking through the savoury cassis fruit, but the finish is decent enough. ***1/2

Only got to taste this on night 2. This wine was amazing, in my opinion. The nose was extremely intense with strong beef jerky, cola and leather. On the palate, incredibly rich and chewy with plenty of deep dark fruit. Extremely delicious and easy to drink. One of the top 20 wines I've had the opportunity to taste.

The fill was well into the neck; decanted about 1 hour prior to service. A purple-ruby core; much younger appearance than the '89. Scents of ripe black fruits, star anise, charcoal and earth. Medium to full bodied, with layers of flavor, impressive concentration, a generous mid-palate, and a long and focused finish. Seemed at least 10 years younger than the '89; the '88 was less aromatically complex, and considerably tighter on the palate. Will likely improve for another 5 to 10 years in the bottle.

Mouton Madness: SDR's BWE Thursday Night Dinner (Equinox Restaurant, Washington DC): Dark red. Soy sauce, cassis, minerals on nose. Medium body, decent fruit concentration, no green or veggies like some '88s, but a bit restrained and overwhelmed by the tannins, especially on the mid and back palate, medium-short finish. Certainly plenty of tannins for it to last for decades, but doubtful that there is enough fruit there to make it turn into anything magical. We all had a good laugh about Suckling giving this 100 points.

This came across as a much younger wine, in every respect, than the '89 Mouton that we had the night prior. The fill was into the neck, and the cork was sound. A murky purple core, turning towards garnet at the rim. Boquet was a bit restrained at first, but upon airing revealed notes of ripe black fruits, white truffle, spice and tobacco. Good concentration, with a firm structure, wonderful focus and delineation, and a complex finish. Will probably improve with additional time in the cellar.

The American Artists with Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (Del Posto): A pretty and very expressive perfume, leafy and minty. Most of the tannin seems to have eroded away and the result is an extremely elegant and supple claret with autumnal, apply fruit and a length that begins uncoiling even before the finish. A very sophisticated profile and seems to be entering its drinking window.

upon opening, had a beautiful expressive nose of cedar, dried herbs, and hay. Color was very dark and did not show any signs of browning. First taste, this one was very light in body and weight which was surprising. After 2 hours of decant, it opened up and filled out beautifully. A very well made wine that was fun to drink, but not great by any means.

Tasting Of Chateau Mouton Rothschild (At The Wine Summit 2008 – Lake Louise, Alberta): 75% CS, 13% M, 10% CF, 2% PV; Medium full colour – ruby/garnet, with a slight amber rim; penetrating black currant fruit in the bouquet, some cedar ad spice, and just a hint of smoke; supple texture – fine harmony – sweet edged black currant fruit – roasted nuts – coffee; solid frame where the tannins seem well absorbed; fine balance; long and satisfying finish, dominated by the black currant fruit. Really quite attractive !

There were many amazing moments at the 2008 Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada, but one of the highlights was a standing room only technical tasting of nine vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The charismatic and entertaining Adrien Laurent, North American Export Manager for Baroness Rothschild led us through this barrage of big Bordeaux and explained label by label nuances of the various artists who have graced the labels over the years. My first observation was how all nine glasses appeared the same dark inky purple beautiful color. Adrien explained peaks and valleys of the vineyard efforts the 88 must be in a valley. My nose and taste buds were probably still recovering from the phenomenal 95, but this 1988 started out slow. Nice deep dark purple, some weird spices in the nose, ginger maybe thyme, I think. In the mouth, it was smooth but unsophisticated. Mineral, some fruits like plum, currant, a little leather or saddle, but a tinge of lye, maybe a touch of soap in the glass although that would be a first in 80+ glasses of wine in two days. This was just OK.

Stunning! No decant necessary. This had been stored perfectly as cork was totally saturated. Wafts of tobacco and coffee grounds gave way to mounds of lucsious fruit, dark and bold, with smooth round tannins adding to the 60 second finish. Much better than any 89 or 90 Mouton I've ever had.

An excuse to drink my only bottle of VVF (Sydney, Australia): A dark, brooding, appealing nose of coffee, chocolate, blackberry, cedar and jasmine tea. The palate is austere and dominated by tannin and I struggle to see it having enough fruit to live long enough for these tannins to resolve despite the immense structure. I still thought it very good, but lacking in the fruit and depth on the palate that I would look for in a wine at this level.

Cork had a bit of seepage, and the capsul had begun to crumble a bit so was bit worried. Openned and decanted for about an hour. Colour was just beginning to show amber at the edge. Beautiful cedar and berry fruit nose, complex. I think this was a perfect time to drink and I don't think it will improve with tannins softenned. A bit acidic on the pallet, but softens with time. Flavour of dark berry's long finish excellent wine. Lorna's 31st birthday (again).

Dinner at Vermont in Los Feliz with Frank D. and Michael C. Frank brought the wine from his personal cellar as we discussed mutual business. Opened and decanted at the table, split betwen the three of us. Not enough to go around. Soft and subtle, with some tannins still peaking out. Fruit was recessed, but present. Terroir very forward in the wine. Not a blockbuster, but a truly enjoyable mature Bordeaux. And that label from Keith Haring. What an artist. I took the cork home to throw into my collection.

Meu primeiro grande Bordeaux. Excepcional!

NobleRottersSydney - First Growth Night (Guillaume at Bennelong): And the Mouton is definitely rich. Overtly ripe blackcurrant fruit dominates the nose just the way you’d expect. The palate shows more cigar/cedar tones and remains highly tannic; dry, dusty and astringent; the fruit plays second fiddle to the structure here, almost to the extent of going missing in action (pardon the mixed metaphor). Only that makes me query any further improvement for this wine, and suspect if it will just plateau at this stage. A medium+ length finish concludes the show.

A 92-point Robert Parker wine. 77% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drunk at a 1988 Horizontal Bordeaux Wine Dinner at Petrus, Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong which also featured Ch. Troplong-Mondot, Ch. Vieux Certan, Ch. Angelus, Ch. Haut Brion and Ch. Rieussec. Deeper colour than all the others except the Haut-Brion. The nose is in a different league...incredibly complex if a bit volatile. In the mouth this is 3-dimensional and silence-creating. Truly wonderful length. It is undoubtedly thin and a touch austere ( I prefer to call it "lean") but what the hell, it's so multi-dimensional and long. I can see why Robert Parker marked it higher than '89 and '90, whilst not the case for the other wines tasted here tonight. This evening's tasting came down to an impossible choice between the fruit, structure and richness of the Haut-Brion and the incredible, but lean, multi-dimensionality of the Mouton-Rothschild '88.

Bottle of Angst, Volume I (Older Bordeaux and More) (Chateau Guerette): [Decanted 1 hour]. I really wanted to like this, but it was just so closed and brooding on this occasion, and I didn't have a chance to revisit later in the night. Aromas were muted, although dried currants, cedar, and smoke seemed present. Rough tannins dominated any secondary flavor notes, and seemed in no mood to fade in the near term.

I really like some of the old clarets I have tasted this year, etc Margaux 1985, Margaux 1983. But compared to this wine they have kept a different freshness despite their age. I think that this is what I really missed in this wine.

I think everyone at the table was impressed by this bottle. It had a gorgeously open nose of crushed berries and minerals. A silky and opulent wine which in my opinion has entered its peak drinking window and will remain there for another 5-10 years. Notes of saddle leather, plum and meaty red fruit. Everything in perfect balance without any characteristic overshadowing the other. Long ethereal finish. 95 points.

We had a lovely birhtday dinner with some friends at Manresa in Los Gatos last night... the food was terrific (especially the parmesan churro. really!)...
we brought the kongsgaard and the mouton and ordered the shafer off their list ($250)
2001 Kongsgaard- (served at room temperature)the only one that might be better is the 1997; citrus, minerals, vibrant acidity, not oaky at all, great balance, long finish- this wine is still young and big; better to not serve chilled; long finish; probably one of the best calif. chards i've had; will be even better in 2-3 years.
1988 Mouton Rothschild- decanted for about 45-60 minutes- should be decanted longer; nice dark color; restrained, tannic, smoky, cigar box (now i know what that descriptor really means); somewhat dry and herbaceous. It opened up a bit over time and was a very nice bordeaux- no high expectations for this- it was very nice... but,
1996 Shafer Hillside Select- wow; decanted 45-60 minutes; deep purple; wonderful nose of blackberry, cassis and plum; it was almost volatile in nature as these smells rose up out of the glass with each swirl; this is a big wine; full bodied; mouth coating sweet tannins; hint of smoke and cigar box (but that may have been influenced by having the mouton right beside it)- a terrific wine- and at $250 from their list, it was worth having as part of our celebration.

I had a really bad bottle some months ago. This wine was dark red, and had a bouquet with notes of steel, wood and cigar box. Great mouth feel here. Soft and round. Seems to drink perfectly now. Ripe fruit with lots of complexity. Certainly not how I remember it. Lots of elegance, and a long balanced finish.

NOTE TO SELF:
3 hours then the funk leaves…..great wine.

Tasted blind. 91-92

Group score: 95.7 pts
Group rank: 5th out of 16 reds

Tasting note:
Ripe cassis red and blue berry fruit, a bit of pencil shavings, iodine, a fleshy dimension, just a bit of leather and tobacco, roses.

Tasted blind together (ranking based on consensus of 8)

2) 1989 Château Cos d’Estournel 94
3) 1993 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 96

A true grand damme that is just beginning her decline. Soft black fruits and emergine hints of dried currants, this is silky and fully integrated. Tannins and acidity holding things together, there is nothing that dominated here - it's all supremely layered. Definitely not the intensity and power you might want, but that's to be expected at this age for this vintage. For lovers of classic claret, you won't be disappointed.

The palate showed flavors of almost raisiny dark red fruit, tea, and graphite, with a bit of toast. The finish was somewhat short. I think at or past peak, but still a delicious example of an excellent fully mature Bordeaux.

Cardamom (the spice) was showing in spades. How different. Still some very nice black fruits in there. Sweet Oak. Silky smooth.

Drink now.

This wine was a beauty from start to finnish.

A big whiff of leathery funk on the nose at first, but beneath is plenty of that flamboyant Mouton character with sandalwood and spicy notes framing red and dark berried fruit.

Dark, concentrated, youthful with tons of Mouton lead pencil/graphite and firmness/power -- but all bound together with elegance. Further proof that this is a most underrated vintage for the best wines.

Love it!

The palate isn't too concentrated and intense either. Not giving much now, but to be honest, I doubt there's much to give. The fruit seems to be drying out a bit, and there's a lot of acidity and tannin to still work through. Good now, but I'm not too optimistic about its future.

Fantastic+

Very good.

Only that makes me query any further improvement for this wine, and suspect if it will just plateau at this stage. A medium+ length finish concludes the show.

($300) The Mann's '88 Blowout: Distinctive nose compared to the other first growths. Rusty mushrooms? Ripe palate, fairly tart, medium bodied. Pleasant.

Tasted at vertical Mouton dinner at the Belgian Lion. Dark ruby with surprisingly youthful-appearing red rim. Intense, elegant nose with jammy blackberry, cherry, plum and spices. Supple, velvety palate of jammy fruit, spices, tar and vanilla. Massive but supple tannins. Long, elegant finish. A wonder example of what Mouton can be.

Great Wine Seminar. Dominated by oak. Very tannic. Lacks freshness and fruit. Not a success. Too severe.
