Dinner with Steve & Lucie (Our Place): Opened to honor Josh Jensen given his recent passing. A true Pinot Pioneer. Decanted for 1 hour based on our previous experiences and this bottle lived up to expectations. Actually, a bit better than our previous bottle on 1/1/22. In fact, so good that our dinner companions, who are not particularly Pinot Noir drinkers, commented on how smooth, round and balanced this wine was. This wine was enjoyed alongside a bottle of 2006 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D'Oro Vigna di Pianrosso, with our entree of Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage.

Red fruit and mint / herb aromas. Very complex flavor with interesting cherry, strawberry, cranberry and raspberry candy flavors. Borderline cherry cough syrup initially. Herbal, minty “Calera” finish.
Well balanced and complete, with lots of acidity and backbone remaining. Still lots of fruit left too, although clearly showing some signs of maturity. Really fills out with air — started singing after 2 hours. This still has plenty of life left, no need to rush. Wish I had another bottle.
Cork was fragile (had to use a Durand) but no sediment.

Wow! A completely different - and significantly better - wine than our last bottle (10/8/16 TN), which, hopefully, was just an "off" bottle. PnP - cork broke but was removed with the Ah So. Continued to open into our meal. Dark red fruits and some earth on the nose. Both of these follow on to the medium plus bodied palate, along with some spice. The acidity is juicy but balancing, and there is just a touch of tannin on the medium plus finish. A really solid bottle of 14-year-old Pinot Noir from one of the Pinot Pioneers - from a vineyard he planted in 1975. Not sure it will improve any, or how much longer it will hold at this level as it is showing some age, so drink 'em if you got 'em.

Popped and poured. Drank with alongside a 2009 D’Angerville Champans and what was interesting is they were remarkably comparable wines with a similiar kind of wild berry component and parallel structure and balance. Of the two to my surprise I would give the Calera the edge. It just had a bit more depth of flavor and looked like it might be able to develop a bit more complexity over time.

Full bodied, scents of plums, cherries, raspberries. Ripe fruits dominate on the palate. A great wine.
