Slow-oxed for an hour at cellar temp (note - this cork was longer than a Durand and left a small disk which needed to be dropped into the wine - otherwise intact). Used a port funnel to decant directly from the original bottle to a new bottle then sealed for 90 minutes before service. A small taste at this point was amazing - all cedar and sweet tobacco in a delicate framework. At service, mature and dried red fruits joined the party. A real treat from the Old School when Caymus had their shit together.

Dark garnet in color with some bricking & clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, plums & dried figs with overtones of classic notes of tobacco/leather/cedar & earthy/dusty notes, minerals, mint & a hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & silky smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, plums & dried figs with herbs, minerals & a touch of cedar. Lingering dry finish. Drinks well at present but at 40 years of age it is most likely at or past its peak of development, so please drink up! The cork was clean & intact; fill was in the mid-portion of the neck well above the shoulder. A stellar aged Napa Cabernet. This particular vintage (bottle?) has aged much better than previous vintages of Caymus SS & is significantly more age worthy than the modern versions.

Blacker and tired compared to the 74 regular that was it's flight mate. If there's a progress category between 'secondary development' and 'dead', that's where this was. Many quite liked it, but too OTH for me.

Drew's 40th: Nose is similar to the magnum of 74 regular (same bell pepper, smoke, red fruit) but with less sweetness. Mostly resolved tannins. I found this to be a bit tired compared to the 74. Fun to try these wines together.

Past its prime, but still drinking well. Very smooth and long palate.Good aroma that promises more than it delivers. An old wine, well balanced, even delicious, but lacking complexity.
