  • Popped and poured. This is a birth-year wine that is medium red with some chalky sediment toward the end of the bottle. On the nose, I first get some mustiness, which is followed by rich fruit, forest floor, and tobacco. In the mouth, this is a tad tired, but still shows some nice fruit flavors folding into a medium-lengthy finish with aspects of autumn leaves. Overall, this was a quality Napa cab that is in surprisingly good shape 44 years on. 92 points.

  • Cassis, dark fruit, earth, mushroom, leather and forest floor. While the wine has good richness, the fruit is fading. Drink up.

  • Dark hazy garnet in color with significant bricking & clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of strawberries, currants & dried figs/raisins with overtones of earthy/loam notes, tobacco/leather, some balsamic notes, spices, minerals & a hint of cedar. Full bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of strawberries, currants & dried figs with spices, herbs, minerals, a hint of balsamic & a touch of oak. Lingering dry finish. Drinks well at present but is most likely well past its peak at over 40 years of age, so drink up! The cork was crumbly upon opening but the fill was in the mid portion of the neck well above the shoulder. Bottle was properly cellared from acquisition upon release. Sad to report, but it appears Caymus Cabs do not appear to hold up & age as well as their contemporaries do, like Heitz, Diamond Creek, Ch. Montelena, Duckhorn & others. If you do have any Caymus Cabs past 12-15 years, I'd drink them sooner than later!
