At Amuse Bouche Australian Cabernet Dinner in Hong Kong - I must admit to being nervous serving this wine as I have not had much success with older bottles of Mount Mary. I needn't have been concerned whatsoever. The brightness in the glass was exceptional which gave a guide as to what was to come. Certainly an atypical Australian it was nevertheless a charming wine with subtle soft tannins that had more in common with claret than Australian cabernet. 1986 is apparently an excellent year in the Yarra and Mount Mary have produced an outstanding example.

3110 and Friends: Capsicum, herbal and parsley but surprisingly I didn't find it too off-putting despite the green dominance. Still has a pinch of sweet fruit in the mix on the palate and the wine did improve while it was in the glass. Lithe and savoury. This was one of those wines that people either hated or just found enough to like about it.

An Offline for Luke (28-50, London): Blackcurrant leaf nose. Cool and leafy. Slightly dusty even. Similar on palate. Cool, fresh, leafy blackcurrant, interesting and refreshing but no real depth or complexity. ***

Mount Mary Cabernet vs Penfolds 707: Aromas of briar, tobacco, leather, violets and crushed rocks. Good depth of flavour, with elegance and balance but not a whole lot of complexity or texture/mouth-feel to it. This bottle was drinking at, or just past its peak.

Corked - musty and totally stripped of fruit on the palate.
