Butterscotch wine. Maybe a poorly-stored bottle? Was not particularly deep or intense. Fine and drinkable but non-descript and obviously not worth the price. At least it was from 1985 amiright?

Decanted and served, it reached its height at about 35 minutes. Deep yellow, its initial aromas were of orange peel and orange oil, but by the two-hour mark there was almost no fragrance left at all.The flavor, on the other hand, was great right from the start and got better: complex, spicy and fascinating. The wine has very little acid, a lugubrious mouthfeel, and gives a sense of weight, substance and heft. Very long finish with many bitter elements.

Jean-Louis Chave in person for E&R's 20th Anniversary, with 22 of his wines! (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Aroma is entirely muted. Palate is muted too in the sense of flavors, but shows the typical wonderful texture. Muted finish, but that wonderful lingering texture is still present. Jean-Louis said the bottle was corked but he found it still drinkable. I agree... I don't taste or smell any TCA note, but that muted sensation throughout is certainly the giveaway. If I opened this at home I'd be sad, but I'd still drink it. That texture alone is wonderful!

Super Rhône tasting (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Color was medium gold. Had a very sweet nose of blood orange liqueur, citrus, honey, nuts, and marzipan. Really blossomed throughout the evening, with the slight heat on the nose mellowing out. Sweet and smooth on the palate. Very round and with less bright acidity than expected. Medium length finish. Very nice overall.

Great experience to taste this wine. But although it was well alive it still lacked fruit. Probably better 10 years ago.
