Best bottle of wine I have had in a few years. This thing is incredible. Amazingly youthful in appearance and in taste. Still oodles of light dried cheery fruit, with tons of floral notes, a bit of spice and camphor, and perhaps a hint of tar. Perfect level of acidity. Long, long finish. I should have bought as many of these as possible when I had the chance.

Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga: 1978 to 2007 (Acquerello, San Francisco): Also amazingly primary looking. Camphor and a brief touch of rubber. Medium weight. Basically austere wine-dry, tannic, and long with adequate ripeness but much less fruit and far less roundness than the Gaiun from the same year. Late note of fresh ground coffee. This was first vintage pair in which I preferred the Gaiun hands down. I think this is much less of a sure bet for further aging as the fruit has begun to fade.

(Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga Camp Gros) Bricking medium dark red violet color; appealing, dried cherry, autumnal, light sandalwood nose; youthful, elegant, dried cherry, dried berry, light sandalwood palate with firm tannins; needs 3-plus years and should go for 20-25 years; medium-plus finish
