  • Red plum, a little herb, leather, ready to go. B

  • Seamless, soft and pure with fully integrated fruit and tannin. Power, grace and incredible sense of balance around tight core of black plum.

  • Flickinger dinner (Chicago, IL): Classic old school Napa here. I didn't like this quite as much as the 1986 Monte Bello alongside, mostly because this felt a little more foursquare. Old cabernet notes for sure, with definitely an emphasis on minerality here. It's relatively light and high acid for a wine with so much fruit; velvety, resolved tannins as well.

  • In my cellar since release. Decanted at 2:30 pm and tasted from 6-10 pm over dinner of grilled steaks. The color of this wine is shockingly youthful with no bricking and translucent vibrant medium garnet. On first decanting the nose was quite earthy along with mushroom (fresh oyster mushroom), leather and a range of red fruit and berries. Over time the nose got more expansive with some floral elements and a deeper blackberry undertone. The palate was initially quite tannic but this faded by dinner time and the wine was soft but quite bright with acidity. Flavors included vanilla, black raspberry, black plum, chocolate covered cherry, leather, freshly dug black earth, fresh mushroom again and a finish that went on for at least a minute. This was tasted along side of the 1987 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace and the 1988 Ch. Lafite Rothschild. All three evolved wonderfully over dinner and this one was often considered the best but in the end I think the Lafite edged out the other two on average over the evening. I have one bottle left of this and I think it will still be excellent in another 5+ years BUT it must be decanted for 3-4 hours to fully show itself, but it did fade a good bit toward the end as the decanter was emptied.

  • Arguably the best Napa I’ve ever had. Incredible nose of lead, dark fruit, graphite, wet rock, and pure sexiness. So balanced, silky, and just screaming classic Napa on the palate.

    This is insanely great. Wow.
