La Tablee: Celebratory Dinner (BYO) (26 Bridge Street, Brooklyn): From a magnum. Not often that I get to drink a birth year wine and always fun to do so. This opened a touch on the musty side, but quickly opened up. Some bricking going on. Lots of dried fruits, more potpourri. Some floral. A real loveliness to it. Very nice.

Snapped up a few old Jasmin the other day and couldn't resist opening one. 1981. I ran to Waitrose and donned my basket with a guinea fowl. The cote Rotie had a medium robe and narrow translucent rim. Very delicate, empyrean nose of gunpowder tea, tobacco, earth, mushrooms and Alba forest like. Evolved beautifully in the glass, started to improve and mature after 90 minutes. Graceful and feminine, gentle on the palate. This is everything one dreams in a mature Cote Rotie. Perfectly balanced and highly complementary with the fowl. Super evening.

Mystery wine night (Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Colour showing age - clear brick red although no additional bricking around the edge. Slightly musty nose which faded and then came back later; some earth and soft wood. Clean, medium light. Some pencil? and bray. Medium fading finish.
