  • Fill to just below base of neck. Opened a few hours in advance, but left standing. Decanted and then poured immediately.
Although showing some age, there was still purpleness in the wine. I would have guessed maybe 20 years old, certainly not 57. Aroma of some fruit (cherries) - one might be forgiven for guessing it was an old Super Tuscan, perhaps. Palate was clean, with high acidity, graphite and cherry/black fruit, although not particularly long or complex. Quite a short finish. A very decent wine, but not a great one. Still - better than expected!

  • From magnum, mid-shoulder fill.
I recorked this bottle a few years ago, so the cork was excellent.
Mature aromas showing some remnants of fruit but largely dominated by earthy, tobacco and cedar tertiary notes.
Very elegant wine as holds true for many of the better wines from 1966.
Good complexity, harmonious balance and a moderately long finish.
Even in magnum, this wine seems to be on its decline.

  • Cork had started to fail; at least an ounce down. Expected it to be ruined but wasn't totally. Presumably would have been better with a solid cork but it did come around after 2+ hours in the decanter. Red fruit showed up with some pleasant notes to offset the oxidation. Even with a solid cork, seems past its prime.

  • Bottle in excellent condition, lovely mature claret, still retaining its core fruits, birthday wine from my birth year

  • There's at times an interesting note of sweet pipe tobacco, earth and also spices. At best this is a medium bodied quite elegant wine, but theres to much acidity in the finish. There's signs of some class, but its long gone.
From the same cellar i recently had a glorious 1970 Calon Segur, so how this has been handle is probably not the reason why its short of expectations or hope.
