This 1955 Cos begins dense, dark, and loamy, requiring 40 minutes of air to cultivate a more complete nose, eventually balancing the density of blue fruit, cool earth, old leather, and cedar with an elegant potpourri note. Despite a top shoulder fill from a Nicolas bottling, this does feel a tad frayed at the edges, losing some cohesion and drive, its absolute potential probably realized 10-20 years ago. While at no single point does this amaze over the 2 hours we spent with it, there’s no arguing that this is a solid example of mature Cos. Yet another excellent performance from one of my favorite mature claret vintages.

Nose is classic claret at first, thin dry red fruit yielding to earthy tones. Gets more rustic, scorched earth, tobacco, smoke, ash. Iron and metallic at times. Fully tertiary. Red fruit is just holding on and is quite sweet in a way that is getting closer to but not yet maderized. Tannin fully resolved. When served a little colder this showed a bit of blackberry and gained a bit of concentration and power. More about the detailed and expressive nose at this stage as the palate is starting to decompose a little. St. Estephe in character, high earth but short of farmy. Interesting to try and pretty close to exactly what I expected, but drink these now as they are good but deteriorating.

Feels quite young, still an amazing acidity. Good ripe dark fruits on the palate, some cigar box and leather too. Not very complex in my opinion but it is drinking nice. Can easily age another decade if stored well but I don’t think this will become more exciting - so why don’t pop the cork right now.
