  • Informal dinner, no detailed notes taken. Compared to a bottle at the same restaurant a few months ago (rated 95) this showed more evolved. Still, this was quite enjoyable with lots of dark fruit but not with the same clean, nice teritary, barnyard aromas but instead hints, and really just hints of soy sauce which shows that this bottle was slightly past its peak. Not decanted, no extensive decant needed.

  • This was very good. Little to no tannins to speak off but the fruit was all there and just the right amount of acidity to cool it down a little bit. Probably more time left in it

  • Tasted double blind. While not the most harmonious wine due to a slightly elevated and not perfectly integrated acidity, this was a winner. Nicely (but not fully) mature, nice brett component and fairly complex. Lots of fun to drink if you like mature Cab. Still identifiable as Napa but with some nice Bdx elements. 95 points.

TN: Beautiful mature nose with barnyard, leather, red fruit and green bell pepper. Intoxicating (if you’re not afraid of some brett). Very fresh, round and balanced on the palate which seems a bit younger but boasts the same red and dark fruit with the barnyard components along with some spices, olives and animalic notes. Medium+ expressive, medium+ precision, good structure with tension and fine tannins and a slightly too elevated acidity. Medium+ length.

Decanting: First glass not decanted, just slightly changed in the 45 mins in the decanter. One or the other might not hurt but at this age, every bottle might be different.

  • Tasted blind from decanter. Minty and menthol notes accompany leather and animal flavours, sweet sourcherry candy type of fruit. (Too) fresh acidity with still grippy tannins. Incredible how young this still feels. Definitey good stuff but seems to need another 5-10yrs to reach its prime!

  • I met Phillipe Melka and his wife a couple of weeks ago. I had tried to find this bottle then to bring and share with them at the tasting, but alas, I was not able to. Unsuspectingly, opening one of my wine cabinets, looking for a nice bottle with grilled steak, I found this bottle. Phillipe and his wife could not have been more gracious and humble when I met them and perhaps I am grading this on an emotional connection, but this wine at 20 years of age is just stunning. There is not a lot of life left and wish I could have shared it with him but it has great fruit still, no oxidation and just a wonderful drinker. For what it is worth, his $150 Sauvignon Blanc, which I do not own, but someday will, is absolutely stunning and worth every penny.
