  • Nice, quite pronounced tannins, med plus acidity. No aging notes yet.

  • Medium+ body, high acid, elegant/modern style.

Quite gently extracted and elegant. Tannins are pretty discreet but acidity is strong.

It got fruitier as the night went on but for me had a strong capsicum/bell pepper/green note. This green note was distracting for me.

One of the reviewers here mentioned tomato leaf. Could be right.

For such a famous winery, disappointing!

  • Welcome home again brother Andrew, and loved the Thaipusam public holiday gathering we had with WMK, SKT and LMC too.

At the very last minute, the lads said lets bring Italians for Andrew to try - After some cellar-searching, I thought why not try this 2019 vintage of Sassicaia's 2nd wine. I was curious to see if Tenuta San Guido could produce an early drinking wine, with a little more complexity then their Le Difese.

We had this alongside Andrew's very special Wild Duck Creek Alans Cabernet 1996, this was an amazing Old World v New World, and young v mature side-by-side.

Light creamy vanilla nose, with purple flowers developing. I had simply bottle-breathed this at the restaurant for about 1 hour prior to serving. Have to say, this is in an approachable initial drinking window now, but wait 5 years for this to develop more complex pleasures!

Blackberries, light mint on the palate, and refined but ever present tannins. Best of all, I enjoyed the lively fresh acidity.

Blend of 60% Cab with 40% Merlot, and aged in French oak barriques, and a small part in American oak, circa 2 years.

    Vintage 2019 in Tuscany:
April was very rainy, which helped stabilise the water reserve of the soils. The continuation of spring was rather unusual with rainfall and cold temperatures also affected by Tramontana winds.
From the end of May, the weather improved, and from June, summer arrived with sunny days, normal temperatures and excellent ventilation (particularly at night).
End of June - Intense temperatures, but this sweltering heat only lasted for a short time. The rest of summer was within the seasonal average, with July and August being hot months.

At USD 50 - 55 this is a little much as a "daily" but I would certainly rank this in my Top 10 for a nice monthly bottle!

  • This was so embryonic. Tight as a fishes ars…. etc. Air for 6hrs made little impact. Lots of fruit, tannin and structure. Don’t drink it too young-waste of time. This should develop into something very special.

  • From double magnum.
Inviting smell of cassis, blackberry, and oak. Beautiful nose with medium intensity. There are other notes of jam, dark cherry and maybe plum. Black pepper, cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla.
On the palate, it’s very young with grippy tannins. It’s full bodied with high alcohol. There is more blackberry and blackcurrant juice. Cranberry-like tartness and high acidity.
    Woody and slightly short finish.

  • Bordeaux blend with 60% cab sov and 40% merlot. The wine has a lot of fruits and structure. A bold powerful with intense of berries on the nose - spicies, blackberry, cherry, a hot vintage with a lot of power. On the palate it is a full body wine with a lot of tannin, dry, dark chocolate, sour pulm long finishing.

  • 2 hours worth of letting it breath before digging in. This was a real treat, so juicy with strawberry’s, cherries and red currant. Silly tanins and medium acidity. Long finish.

  • Supper with Daniel (and the girls) (E & M's in the rocks, Sydney): tiny little tomato leaf note with black fruits, muted sweet spice, polished oak. Medium plus intensity acidity, slightly sour fruits show as black and red hued, alcohol warmth vie with silky textured, drying tannins which drying and persistent. Hmm.

  • Now tasted bottle nr 4, and still massively disappointed.
Almost no structure, low tannins and even less acidity.
Taste of black berries, ripe cherries and oak with hints of tobacco, leather and vanilla, which is nice but lacking intensity.
All in all, low value for money and for me, this wine will not benifit of aging.
High expectations for this wine, it couldn’t see it through - the rating reflects that

  • This tasted very young, cool and acidic to me. The most ‘closed’ bottle I have tasted. It had a 45 min decant - based on other reviews this was probably not enough but the longer it spent in glass (over 3 hours) the less I liked it.

On the nose there is gravel and acidic red fruit. Cranberries come to mind.

On the palate, high acidity. Gravel, limestone, the core stone in a plum. There is not much flavour, a very short finish and no secondary notes.

I had high hopes for this bottle but was very disappointed. This was not worth it’s £35+ price tag.

  • Color: Deep ruby. Nose: Red fruit. Cherries. Thyme and rosemary. Mouth: Good expressiveness and length. Finish is slightly diluted. Good tannin structure and acidity. Full bodied. Needs a bit decanting at this stage.

  • Still young but very enjoyable with an hour in the decanter, better with food. Dark fruit, spice, polished tannins, good acidity, and very elegant and structured overall. Seems more optimal to enjoy it sooner / start of the meal than later. However towards the end of the meal the wine had a strong alcoholic note on the nose as it took over the smell of the fruit more. Recommend to hold if you have these, or decant at least an hour if opening now.

  • First of a case. Based on prior notes, I opened this with about 5 hours in the decanter. Paired well with sunday sauce and meatballs, sausage, spaghetti. A lot of sediment towards the end. Nice cab Merlot blend, a bit spicy at first taste but did best with food. Hoping to visit here next summer, so this was a good intro to the famous bolgheri estate.

  • The 19 Guidalberto is alluring and a true sweetheart. Intense dark ruby, translucent in appearance. Nose brings dark berries - cherries, plums, blackberries, blackcurrant - violet, vanilla, smoke, coffee, licorice. Palate is velvety medium-bodied, fine tannic structure, balanced acidity, excellent concentration and depth, dry, spicy round-off. Drinks perfectly well today.

  • Popped and poured.
Quite closed and shy out of the bottle.
Luminous ruby, very nice texture and quite viscous.
Dark fruits, cassis, strawberry coulis, plums, blueberries, great purity of fruit.
Nose is gaining complexity with time in the glass, violets, hibiscus, roasted cocoa, coffee bean, sweet spices, mushrooms, vanilla bean, roasted pepper, tobacco leaves. Elegant nose.
Great mouthfeel, round and smooth, so fruity and tart, juicy.
The structure is there, tannins are plenty but polished.
The wine is fresh, without noticeable heat (14%) and with a nice depth despite its obvious youthness.
Classy and noble expression of Bolgheri terroir, the wine is enjoyable but still a bit closed, i recommend decanting or opening some hours before.
Reasonably much more complex and ready in 3/4 years, it will show probably its best after 10 years considering its balance at the moment.
    Hold.

  • Our first formal tasting in Bolgheri at none other than where it all began, Sassicaia. The wines in the lineup today: 2020 Le Difese, Guidolberto 2019 & Sassicaia 2019. Less familiarity with these wines than others, I was curious how my palate would interpret Italian Bordeaux (so far the Merlot has been fantastic). Wine was slow ox for 3 hours before the tasting.

No time to ponder/allow to open. Red fruit, good/higher acidity, medium tannins, mineral, balsamic. Hold ~2-3 years for it to simmer down a bit.

  • One of my favorite wines out of Bolgheri from Tenuta San Guido. Drinking well now and will only get better with age. As is, it tastes like an older wine. I always try to keep at least a case in the cellar, and replenish as needed. It’s that good. Can’t wait to taste the Sassicaia of the same vintage.

  • Coming back to this. Gave more time to open ~2.5 hours. On the nose: Rich Plums , cassis, dark chocolate, graphite, vanilla. On the palate: Tart cherry and cassis, leather, plum, graphite and savory notes. Nice plush mouthfeel. This is really an enjoyable wine. Good price quality ratio.

  • Tenuta San Guido Guidoalberto 2019
Nose of some old cheese, licorice, Chinese herb candy, and clove. On the palate, blackberries, clove, licorice, chocolate, Chinese candy, tastes of an older wine. 92/100

  • Closed bouquet, closed taste; in the aftertaste there was some depth. This wine needs bottle age and aeration too. I hope to retaste this wine.

  • young, powerfull , dark and red fruit. Some warmer, spicy, oaky notes. everything very young on the palate, but in good balance. Enough acidity, tannins and concentration for a long live. for sure a great Guidalberto with 15 years potential

  • Well, this is clearly too young. Why? Cause I can taste some residual sugar apparently intended for in bottle fermentation. Yet the body of the wine is present already. The chassis is there for the journey. Tannins, acidicity and some herbal tones already in a nice balance. But for now, quite masked by excess sweetness. Which is not offputting, but just shows that the journey of this wine is just about to start. Wait with yours for at least until 2027, better yet 2032. This really should not have been released for the market yet. If you drink this now, you should expect little to no complexity or sophistication. For the longer haul, slightly worried about this having 60% cab in it. Normally, does not bode well for a jewel of a wine. Might yield a classier wine with some sangiovese and more merlot in it. But we shall see. For now, nothing even remotely to do with anything Sassicaia at all, save maybe for some of same "mellowness" if you will.

  • Opened and decanted for 30 minutes. Color is a deep red/purple. On the nose: Currants, leather, baking spices, graphite and plums. On the palate: Tart cassis, cherry, plum and leather. I think this is going to be very good but it is very young. I also think needs at least 3 hours to open up.

  • This is clearly way to young, and having always been an Ornellaia fan I thought with the highly rated 2019 vintage I should re-try the baby Sassicaia, well this showed very well tonight. For me Ornellaia has always been the more elegant wine whereas Sassicaia the slightly more muscular wine. The Cabernet is clearly dominant here with blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry, graphite, pencil lead, violets, cedar and cracked black pepper on the nose. The palate is full bodied and muscular with dark lush fruit, that floods the palate along with waves of crushed spices, florals and dark chocolate, the tannins are super structured along with a refined slightly closed mid-palate leading to a focused and lingering finish.

  • This was quite enjoyable and open for business. There was a balance and glimpse of just how strong a vintage 2019 was for Bordeaux varietals in Tuscany in 2019. This will be fun to follow over the next 5-10 years.

  • Really nice bottle this. Balanced, structured with fine fresh Cabernet. Good length no obtrusive alcohol at all. Really impressed by this wine which I found approachable now without hesitation. Could certainly age for years. More dark fruit and cedar compared to ornellaia s second wine in 19 drank alongside (stylistically the misses preferred the red fruit me serre Nuove, whereas I preferred this guidalberto). Really what a second wine should be, more midweight more digest a tad friendlier, but still unmistakable the younger sibling of the grand Vin. Outstanding value at around 35 eur. Makes me consider purchasing the 19 sass upon release.

  • Love the 19 vintage vs 16 and 17. Fresh red cherry, red currant, a little savoury and balsamic. Medium plus acidity, high tannins but fine in texture. Medium plus flavour intensity and medium plus finish. For Bordeaux blend, I guess you either drink it really young within 2-3 years, or give it 8-10 years and wait till it out of sleeping window.

  • I am very impressed with this wine. This truly is a "baby Sassicaia" as other have suggested. This is definitely young needs lots of air to get going but once you do you can really appreciate the ageworthy structure of this wine. The cabernet really shines with nice acidity and ripe crisp fruit. This is light on its feet and not chewy in slightest bit. Slightly drying on the finish but not in a bad way. A solid 93 and and has room to grow to 95 with age.

  • wijnbeurs proefnotitie:

  • Mid ruby. Nose is initially closed, but eventually opens up to show cherries, dried prunes, stony minerality, and some smoke. Palate is dominated by high acidity and high tannins. There is good length but the wine is not in balance yet - the fruit is too reticent to stand up to the tannins. It will be interesting to see if the fruit will live long enough to outlast the tannins. At this point this wine is a challenge. Requires at least a couple of hours in the decanter, or 5+ years in the cellar. Definitely has the structure to last into the 2030s.

  • Truly tastes tuscan. Not sure what I mean by that. 60 cab and 40 merlot. But tastes very Tuscan. And stiff right now. Just open and needs a ton of time.

  • This is latent and either needs a serious decant, or many hours breathing. Polished, slightly angular tannins, with cut, there is precision and beauty. Cherries, dried plums, granite, pencil lead, freesia, currant paste and crumbling rock. Savory, a medium body that is well framed. The sheer balance is magnetic. Peel the layers back and the depth becomes even more evident. This “baby” Sassicaia (with forty percent Merlot) is an ager. Drink 2024 - 2036.

  • Nose: strawberry candy, almost like a berry perfume, dusty chalky, orange zest, blackberries, cranberry, flowers, pomegranate

A lot of the same notes as the nose, little bit of everything: spicy, savory, sour, a little sweet, good dryness, lighter mouthfeel, super concentrated berries, a lot of everything here it’s interesting for sure and of course young

  • Tasted from the winelist at Capri Ristorante, Indianapolis.
This was darky inky garnet purple colored, medium full bodied, nicely balanced, bright vibrant blackberry and ripe plum fruits accented by zesty anise, hints of smoke, vanilla and graphite, and by tangy acid on the expressive finish.

  • Red rim, dark red core. Balsamic notes, some smoke and fruit. Lean and energetic. Needn’t be a blockibuster Wonder if harvested earlly to achieve that style? Smooth tannins which do their job and give the wine life for the years to come. Well integrated acidity.
