My first time trying a Montepeloso, their 'Grand Vin', from Tuscany. A blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Malavasia Nera and Alicante Bouchet. Reminded me of a Bolgheri. Blackberry, leather, cherry, bacon fat, savory herbs, Tuscan dust. Tannins present but resolved and well integrated. Excellent wine.

Subsequent notes on this wine from 6 years ago. Dark reddish-purple garnet, essentially opaque in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of dark fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes of violets, spices, herbs, dark cocoa, coffee, tar, minerals & hints of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied, with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe dark fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, dark cocoa, spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing but at 14 years of age, it is close to or at its peak of development. Although it may hold here for several more years, I doubt any further development would occur.

Colour still rich and deep. Ripe and luscious but plenty of matter. Still with a twist of tannin on the finish. Classy maybe a little glossy but lovely balance and good with and without food. Ready now but at least 5 years to go.

Decanted for 3 hours. Fruit still retained. Wine softened over time. Very enjoyable. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It tastes like blackberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has angular texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. Paired with lasagna, but this probably would have done better with steak. I think that this wine will do well for another 5-10 years.

Opened a couple of hours before dinner. Drinking nicely, color just showing a touch of age, tannins well integrated…still has structure to hold up for a few more years. Will easily make its 20th birthday.

(Decanted for two hours) Deep red colour with a maturing nose showing sweet morello cherries, herbs and minerals in a very pleasant way. Still showing austere tannins on the maturing palate showing leather, morello cherries and minerals with a lengthy finish. This was showing very well tonight and matched the fillet of deer with green peppers sauce perfectly. (Best 2020-2030)

Still needs some oxegen to open up and preforming relatively well. Not much bricking on the edges and still a very deep color in the glass. A bit unbalanced on the nose as the ethel alcohol is predominant and overtakes the fruit, herb and spice notes. Under the ethel vapors lies some dark fruit tones of black currant and cassis, with marjoram present and little baking spices. The unbalance persists on the plate with with the alcohol dominating the flavors. Dark red fruit and cocoa come through with a long finish. On the upside, the tannins are in a great place right now being ever so present, but not coarse, creating a fantastic mouthfeel. Assuming more time will increase the disparity of unbalance, drink up or roll the dice. 3 bottles left so I’ll check back in down the road.

Really fresh tasting and outstanding. Excellent depth of flavors. Tastes of dark red fruits with some spice in the background. Last of a really good wine for us.

Strawberry and raspberry on the nose; on the palate, intense cherry, currant, blackberry, and notes of plum, anise, and earth, with moderate tannins and strong acidity on the long finish. This is excellent, and it was an excellent value at about $40. The Cellartracker drinking window looks about right.

Drinking beautifully. Lovely “fruit rouge” on the nose with a hint of menthol behind it. Fruit hits the palate first, but then cedar, lovely tannins, and a saline note on the finish. No hurry on this I think.

A real pleaser and just getting on its maturity platform after a few hours of air. This basic cuvee of Montepeloso is performing well above its pedigree. Quite some complexity, not boring or overly sweet like some Montepulciano/Sangiovese wines in warm years can be. Good freshness and a spicy finish. Drink now -2030

Drank this wine at the Boathouse Function Room over lunch with my wine mates.
Dark purple with solid notes of dark red fruits, leather, ripe cherries, chocolate, and a touch of cream. Good charming intensity and complexity on the palate. Smooth roller coaster movement with high energy attacks followed by mellow waves soothing the tastebuds.
A very wonderful wine.

Picked up a case at auction for £200 all up. Seemed good value and certainly has proved to be.
The nose was a classic Sangiovese. A lot of Casis, tannin, leather and earthy tones. The wine was clearly aged but was not fully resolved. After an hour the nose became noticeably more earthy + dark fruits and less tannin.
On the palate the wine was evidently. Soft, round and well balanced. It had a lot of body but was very subtle and chewy. The over whelming sensations were Cherry truffle and earth.
The very Grippy tannins give great structure. Nice long finish of chocolate and truffles and a lot of pepper. It complimented the rib of beef very well.
Going forwards I think the wine may resolve further and come softer. But, I would be worried about losing the forward fruits. This is tannin balance is perfect right now and I think this wine is at peak expression and vibrancy. Will keep for at least another 3-5 years at peak.
A wonderful wine and a true pleasure. A testament of the great work at Montepeloso.

Slow oxed for 6 hours then into a decanter for two. Wow this is black as night and the cork was barely saturated. Nose overwhelms you with black fruit, charcoal, smoke, strawberries and balsamic notes. This wine has always been a monster. Early drinking window. Really? Yes! It’s a mouthful of bitter black fruit, charcoal, and tart berries that coats your entire mouth. More austere than previous bottles. Let’s see how it developed. As it sits in the glas is smooths out showing a bit of apples and some sweetness. Nice. This wine has gained in strength. Not sure where it’s’ going.

Pop just like my bottle in November. I think this is the way to drink this wine which is the opposite of what I normally do. Explosive nose of deep red sweet fruits maybe a bit of cloves and cinnamon. Very deep color with great legs. Love the mouthfeel. Initially very smooth entry then it explodes in the mouth bursting with sweet fruit then the tannins kick in in the most beautiful way. Wow sorry that it’s my last bottle of 2010. I loaded up on the 2016 and can’t wait to try it. What a really great wine.

Pop and pour, consumed over 2 hours. Nose: Medium intensity, red fruit - cherry and strawberry, iron, shoe leather, and floral undertones - violets - broad though not intense. Palate: Medium-full bodied, dark red and black fruit attack with pencil lead and leather notes, good mid-palate persistence, great balance and nice mouth-feel. Finish: Medium-plus length dominated by dark red fruit, spice, leather, and minerals. Can't imagine this getting any better and it's quite awesome at this moment - wonderful wine.

This bottle was a little brettier, definite barrel funk going on, in an old world sort of way. The fruit was a bit muted, and the tannins are smoothing down to nothing! Spice, cocoa plumsicle. Still great.

POP at a Restaraunt. Black as night. The nose is screaming Sweet cherries and a bit of dirt Just fantastic concentrated nose. One of the best Aromatics of the year. Still very primary in the mouth but in perfect balance just very young. In the mouth it is heavily cherried, dark fruits and sweetness. As it sat in the glass it just got much better and started to developed into a more resolved wine. When I drink another, I will decant it first several hours before drinking. This is a monster of a wine but really great. Interesting as I own the baby version of the ‘15 & ‘16. Both are not even close. More like a distant cousin. Tonight 95+ and will get better. WOW.

the 2010 Montepeloso Eneo has reached a beautiful spot in its evolution, showing a bouquet of crushed black cherries with moist dark soil tones and animal musk, lifted by sweet mountain herbs, cedar dust, smoke and hints of pepper. On the palate, I found rich, silky textures, offset by Sangio spice and zesty acids, with cool-toned red and black fruits, savory exotic spices, hints of leather and salty minerality. The finish was long, displaying polished dark red fruits slowly fading against a back drop of woodsey herbs, tobacco and hints of residual tannin. I've followed this wine since release and tonight's performance shows that it was worth cellaring--i just wish I had a case to work through... gorgeous!
Earth, leather, smoke, bacon fat, tobacco, herbs, cocoa, blue and blacks. My gawd, what doesn't this wine have? Stunner, indeed. BUT do decant, OR save it for another couple of years. I have another one, and it's moving down a few shelves. But this is amazing stuff.

Unfortunately my last bottle of this. Beautifully open and ready to go, showing expressive notes of black cherries, blackberries, some plum, tobacco, sweet spices, violets, also some leathery notes and some roasted coffee. It‘s pretty full-bodied, dense and with very good mid-palate persistence, has still pretty high acidity providing a lot of tension and freshness and medium+ tannin that is good quality. Very good length. A superb value in top-notch Italian wine. Sometimes these wines are a little much for me but they really killed it in 2010.

Black as night with deep dark and savory notes of herbs, forest floor, roasted tobacco, and black plums. I didn't expect this to have the density that it possessed. I would wait at least 5 years before opening.

The nose was dark, earthy and layered, as savory cherry and plum gave way to notes of rosemary, crushed stone, and dusty dried flowers, mixing with confectionary hints of baker's chocolate and spice. On the palate, silky textures nearly enveloped the senses in waves of spiced cherry, with the offsetting bitterness of medicinal herbs, savory minerals, and a twang of zesty acids. The finish was long, with youthful tannin making its first appearance, creating a grippy display of dried cherries with resonating hints of minerals, leather and spice.
I believe I caught the 2010 Eneo at an odd evolutionary phase, as it felt disjointed, yet still possessing all the elements needed to become a balanced and mature wine in time. With one bottle left, I hope I can catch it at peak.

Deep, dark reddish-purple garnet, essentially opaque in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of dark fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes of violets, spices, herbs, dark cocoa, coffee, anise, minerals, somewhat smoky & hints of cedar & vanilla in the background. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing although it is still tightly wound. Despite being 8 years old, it should continue to develop further & improve with additional years of aging. I believe it may score even higher with further development as well. A indicative blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Montepulciano & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Another excellent bottle of this. My 2nd to last bottle and so far no disappointing bottles. Again beautifully perfumed, with nice freshness, persistence and good structure. I am not sure if this will be much better in a few years so I decided to drink my stash rather soon. One of the very best values in Tuscany (in 2010).

A rather adorable effort from one of those star producers, the fruit in this almost ten year old wine still reveals a crescendo of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry, albeit with a hint of subdued saddle leather lurking behind th ecorner. There is also a secondary layer of cacao, leather and spice which is more forward after some time in the glass. It is a stuning nose! The palate is integrated and all components are in place. A one minute length on the finish certainly puts the dot over the i for me. This wine will continue to develop for many more years. (score is 94+)

Very glad I sprung for a case! This is one of the best wines for the money! Rich, full bodied Sangiovese blend that punches well above its weight class. No problem pairing this baby with hearty pastas or red meat. Ready to go after 45 minute decant!

Upon first opening, there's an aroma of fruits that you can smell from the other end of the dining table. I didn't decant it, but instead poured out a first glass to allow the wine some headspace to breath for a further 30 minutes. In the glass it's a lovely deep, purple-red color. At first sip, the wine is very light, but it quickly bodies up given some air. The distinctive Sangiovese flavors are particularly evident. Yes, as one person mentioned, there's a transitory ripe fruit phase on its way to becoming beautifully balanced, quite complex and all too drinkable. This is a classy wine that hails from a very good vintage. This wine goes well with Roast Duck, Beef or Cheddar cheese. It's probably in the early stages of it's drinking window and will likely be good for at least another 10 or 12 years. There's no need to wait, but it will be interesting to hold a few bottles back for a couple of years.

It's still rather dark, tannic, intense and a bit austere; might be partly due to bottle variation. At any rate, will wait at least another year before attacking the next one.

Opaque crimson color. Nose has strikingly smoky and stony aromas, with residual scents of rhubarb. This is midweight on the palate with only moderate structure, surprising given this vintage's reputation. There is an astringent greenness at midpalate before this finishes somewhat short. The nose is intriguing, but I'm left wanting more in the mouth. I'm inclined to wait 3 or so years on my remaining bottles.

We really liked this wine. It was a fine companion to my wife's Lasagna. It features a beautiful rich red to purple color in the glass. We decanted it for about 2 hours prior to consumption. There were some fine solids in the bottle that I partially avoided. The aroma was of sweet red fruits and a hint of spice. It tasted slightly sweet without any off flavors, alcohol, or imbalance. There was a generous amount of darker red fruit and fine tannins. The after-taste was very nice although not exceptionally long.

Surprisingly good - a hodgepodge of black and red fruit flavors, in quite a fruit-forward wine. But, in the mouth is become black and charred and earthen. The tannins almost shut down the finish but what survives is lingering and lovely. The only flaw is a small touch of additional acidity that unbalances the entry. But, still, that one is easy to overlook.

Pretty dark garnet color. Notes of dark cherries, blackberries, tobacco, leather, coffee, also some spices and balsamic notes of cedar wood. Also some notes of roasted meat and bone. Later also some elderberries. Full-bodied and dense, but without any heaviness. It has medium-high acidity and still medium-high tannin. Good length. Again a super impressive Eneo... I went through a few bottles already and it's one of the very best values in top-notch Tuscany I know...

This needed a few hours of air to open and it was beautiful once it did. A dense, sappy, gritty, and rustic wine, while still showing copious berry fruit. Green tobacco, herbs (sage in particular), coal, black earth, and a pleasant touch of umami. Chew mouthfeel, weighty texture, earthy finish. The wine wears its alcohol well. It will likely last until 2025.

Gave this lots and lots of air. Very dark in appearance. An amazing bouquet of black fruits, spices, sandalwood. Very exotic. On the palate, the wine still has sharp oaky elbows, and acidity that needs to back off with time. The fruit is there but overshadowed. Not showing its potential; try again in 3-4 years.

Beautiful hairy nose, quite intense and typical toscana. Slightly leathery bot not too much, well balanced yet substancial. Palate holds up, good structure, high acid and high rough tannins. Really nice wine, a tad better than the san guisto. Great value at reasonable price i think.

Needed a 4 hours+ decant bit was wonderfully soft with no hard edges. Well integrated acidity, medium bodied. Dark chocolate, spices, floral notes and a 20 seconds finish. Overall it was a pleasure to drink that wine. No absolute standout quality but no flaws. Would buy and drink it again.
Some friends not particularly liking Sangiovese were really positively surprised. On top, value for money is great (not considered for the rating though).

As lovely as during the last tasting. The fruit still shows as a crescendo of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry... A secondary layer of cacao, leather and spice moves forward with some time in the glass. It is a lovely lovely nose, though young it shows a lot of potential. The palate is balanced and has all components where supposed. Integration will come given some time in the cellar. Tannins and acidity are not as outspoken as during the last tasting and the oak is kept in a proper leash. A one minute length on the finish still puts the dot over the i for me. This will develop into a total stunner - if I can just let my remaining bottles rest in the cellar. (score is 94+)

A totally amazing entry level effort from Montepeloso. The fruit is quite amazing with tons of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry... A secondary layer of cacao, leather and spice emerges with some air. Lovely. The palate adds to the overall expression with balance and all components in place. Integration will improve with time, right now tannins and acidity are a bit outspoke, while any oak is kept at a reasonable level. A 55+ second length on the finish puts the dot over the i for me. This will develop into a total stunner if just given some patience. (score is 94+)

Drank through a venturi straight out of the bottle. It was very nice on the nose. The wine has an alcohol and acidity bite to it. It is not overpowering however. The tannins are there but somewhat subdued. This was complex with vanilla hints underlying the deep cherry and leather mix. I will need another bottle.

Drank over three days. Mostly closed on the first day, though clearly a very big wine, showing violets, lavender, herbs, high-pitched black fruits (imagine purple or black pomegranate), blueberry, black earth, charcuterie, sanguine, saline, and tar notes. It was even bigger the second day, but still high-pitched. On the third day the wine hinted at what it might become in seven to ten years, showing all the same elements noted above, more openly.
Very high alcohol stood out over all three days, making balance an issue, and the wine is noticeably more acidic than tannic, though not to imply that tannins are not present. The core of this wine is high-toned dark berries, herbs, and tar. This to say, it does not have the weight of the 2010 Oreno, the most impressive of all 2010 Tuscan offerings I have sampled. Overall, a wine of power, with incredible acid, medium tannin, and very high alcohol. A whole lot of wine for the price, and with time a score of 94 is certainly possible. Not for the faint of heart, and if drinking now recommend an 8+ hour decant. Excellent value! 93-94.

PnP. Medium-dark garnet color. Amazing nose of dark cherries, elderberries, cassis, sweet spices, tobacco, roasted meat and some smoke. With some air there is also an almost medical flavor developing that's very appealing. On the palate there are notes of dark fruit again, elderberries, tobacco leaf, minerals, leather and some spices. It's full-bodied and dense but without any heaviness, has medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is recognizable but silky. The structure is well-hidden under a wealth of fruit. Super long finish. This is a fantastic blend from Truscany that combines power with freshness and complexity. It's still very young but I'm sure it will develop even more complexity with some bottle-age. And on this level of quality, it's also a breath-taking value.
Opened with slow-ox for 90 minutes. Not a wine for me. Super Tuscan to the core. Massive fruit and alcohol on the palate with a harsh finish that seems to be prevalent in wines like this (Super Tuscan/California). It seemed ultra-modern in style and It lacked the elegance, grace and finesse of wines from Piedmont. Perhaps it is still too young. Perhaps it is just me. Will see what day 2 brings.
This showed a dark and inviting nose of medicinal black cherry, blackberry, leather, animal musk, pipe smoke and a savory, buttery earthiness--like rich winter cuisine. On the palate, it was focused, yet plush and with a perfect balance of acidity. Red and black fruits, black licorice and notes of mineral stone saturated the senses and seemed to stick to every corner of the palate. It finished with dry, dark fruit extract penetrating the senses while it's structural elements flexed their muscle and tugged at my gums. This was an impressive wine with a beautiful future ahead of it.

I think that this wine will do well for another 5-10 years.

I've followed this wine since release and tonight's performance shows that it was worth cellaring--i just wish I had a case to work through... gorgeous!

Medium-full bodied, with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe dark fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, dark cocoa, spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of vanilla.

Nice concentrated fruit, blackberries and so on. Good finish, if a little drying.

Virtually identical note to the one dated 5/31/2014. What a beautiful wine, it combines a certan richness and dark flavors with the freshness of the vintage.

Consistent with previous note. This needs time to come together, as it is tightly wound. While enjoyable now, it should improve with three to five years of cellaring, and certainly has the stuffing to last ten plus years.

Excellent acid. Drank really well on the first night and was a bit closed on the second night.

Wow! This is a huge wine but it still has the old world edge to it. Smells mostly of alcohol and has flavors of cherry, plum, and spices. Its very juicy and has only mild tannins. A good purchase and I'm happy to have more.

Decanted for an hour or so. It was the third wine we drank and so perhaps was lessened by the comparison. Normally I like Eneo but this tasted a bit tarry.

Hard to rate at this age, but to me doesn't warrant, yet, the ratings it received. We'll see. Right now, it's a bit monolithic and heavy on the palate.

Bottle from a friend's cellar. First tasting since I ordered a few bottles. I wish I had ordered more. Fine wine. Fruit, structured, tannin. How long it will age ? enjoyed drinking it now

Young. Already has some sediment, so I'll be sure to decant when I revisit in 5-10 years.
