A nice aged wine that I believe has peaked. It still has some fruit and acidity. The wine never seemed to developed the resolution I would have liked to be able to enjoy the secondary flavors of tobacco, loam, and spices. They are there, but not distinct and hence do not elevate the wine like other 2010's. For the price, it is a good wine.

Impressive Grenache based wine at a very good drinking point. Two hour slow ox, 2 hour decant. Deep dark color. Beautiful dark and some red fruit on the nose. Some secondary notes. Full bodied. Sweet, fine, balanced tannins and acidity, smooth mouthfeel. Long, long finish. Very enjoyable wine.

Records not handy. Bought a few bottles 7-8 years ago, perhaps 15/b or so; this is #3 or 4. Solid cork. Decanted with normal sed for its age. Dark purple; mature black plums, black cherry nose; black fruits, hint of bouillon after an hour, good mouthfeel. I recall this wine being closed 3-4 years ago. The fruit is now showing, but there's a hint of ox (storage has been good). Seems a bit tricky to time this one. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation (see earlier posts for my 4-category, non-point rating system): This is notable- when considering quality, age, and price--but we'll see.

Decanted, Pleasant nose, nice legs, pleasant thick taste The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry. It tastes like blackberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

'Altonplace' is spot on with his review: "Outstanding qpr for a sub $20 bottle. Rich, voluptuous levels of mature berries overlaying a thin but present tannic layer."

Surprisingly good, especially given some very negative comments by others. Maybe I just happened to get a good bottle? Immediately upon opening it's quite pleasant, balanced, refreshing, interesting, no rough aspects. Very well integrated tannins and oak pairing up with fairly intense and interesting fruit and just enough acid. Goldilocks - neither sweet nor sour. At its peak now, will probably hold up a few more years.

Bought 6b at 16/b from a local retailer about 8 years ago. First bottle or two were tight, seemed closed; this is the third, and it's ready to drink. Took as a carry-in to a local restaurant without decanting; decanting would have been better. Dark purple; fragrance of mature red fruit, esp. black cherry; more red fruit, hint of tar, very good mouthfeel before the sediment hit for the last quarter bottle. This has come around--tasty, not quite delicious. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

This one makes you do a bit of a double take. A Bordeaux shaped bottle, with the lovely Chateau pictured on the front...mais non!!! A Rhone-like blend (mostly grenache and syrah, with sprinkling of mourvedre and carignan), from the "deep south" that then opens with a barnyard nose of a Cote Rotie. Lovely fruit, and so much earth. Later it comes together and offers hints of cocoa. I paired this with a sausage and mushroom sauteed (earth on earth in earth) and my night was complete!

This juice has finally come around. What would be a real crowd-pleaser for the folks who prefer something other than dry red wine is not going to impress a lot of committed oenophiles. I’m definitely one of the latter, but here I am, singing the praises of a wine I once wrote off. That’s the ineffable magic of bottle age in a well-made wine that’s built for age, if somewhat awkwardly. Somehow, what started out as an overly-oaked, overly-extracted, too-tannic beast has softened around the edges in a manner that befits its pedigree, if not its overly-extracted professional ratings on release. But hey, they got me to take note and buy a case, so here we are, this fancy little bottle and I, flaws and all, getting older together and against all odds, evolving just a little bit and trading the exuberant youth for something less vivacious but more complex. Oh yeah, it’s nicely balanced and medium-bodied, very slightly fruity, and all ripe, dark plummy fruits with a bit of cassis liquor, a light touch of citrus zest, mere notions of balsamic, and some of that old Grenache essence that you can spot a mile away in a pea-fog. It’s fully ready and won’t improve with age. I’d drink up by 2019 lest it become a companion for your compote.

Last of 3 bottles. This has improved with bottle age but clearly at peak.
Purple color with clear meniscus and not throwing any sediment. On nose, blackberry, plum, and licorice. On palate, medium body, medium acids, tannins are completely integrated & non-existent and flavor profile of black cherry, blackberry, black licorice & touch of herbs. Long finish. 91+ Would buy again and great value.

Slightly funky, smoky nose. I might have guessed Walla Walla Rocks Syrah from the warmth and funk but softer and more evolved and without the blueberry fruit I get from there. This has a nice weight, quite rich; fruit has started transitioning to savory. Tannins are soft, finish is persistent and the wine has nuance. Much better than the note about a dessert wine mess stripped of its sugar led me to expect. I'd expect this to continue at least at this level for another 3 years.

The tannins have resolved but a touch of acid remains keeping this drinkable. Deep blackberry with some notes of smoked meats, hoisin sauce and a bit of Provencal herbs on the nose as well. Decent enough with and in a pot roast. Lots of sediment.
I'm thinking this may hold for another couple of years but I would suggest drinking it up.

Just now starting to drink well. Upon opening, nice candied, floral notes. Medium red and purple fruit profile. Whisps of undergrowth. Still some edge to it but the drinking window is really finally starting to open up. Medium/medium and almost flat or flabby on the back end. Air still provides some improvement. Start drinking now through 2019.

With tenderloin steak, roast potatoes, asparagus. Very dark crimson, opaque. Nose shows plum and cherry, a bit muted (bottle opened only 25 minutes before pouring - probably needed a bit more time). Dry, acid and tannin present but in balance. Cherry and black pepper. A big, full wine, but still a gentleman about it.

This has improved with more time in the bottle. The tannins have smoothed out. Flavors were slightly muted (still good), but emerged more after some air time.
Flavors of cherry, spice and vanilla. Smooth tannins. Starting to come into a good drinking range, especially with a little air time first.
Nice QPR.

Seems like a wine made from very ripe fruit, heavily extracted. I'm at the middle of a case opened and tasted periodically over the past 3 years. At this point, the wine appears to be in a state of significant transition where it is fairly rapidly depositing or polymerizing it's ripe and dusty, bordering on dirty, tannins. I too find a lack of sufficient acidity to balance this wine and potentially carry it through to the resolution of these significant tannins. Fruit is there but muted, round and bordering on overripe. We shall see. For now, I am less optimistic than at the point 2 years ago when I bought up numerous bottles of the 2010 vintage. Hopefully this will clarify into a sublime bottling given a decant off the sediment, but certainly not now.

Opened on the recommendation of a member here. This wine has a great nose and a predominate round muted fruit palate. The acid and tannins are overshadowed by the fruit. I let this breathe for about an hour and drank it over two hours or so. Once the wine presented as written above, it stayed there. This has Phillipe Cambie's fingerprints all over it. That is not bad not good, but it is his statement. New world, not too complex, pleasing many, exciting few. I have a few more that I will open sooner than later because I don't see long(er) term in this bottle. Having something like bolognese? Open this, the acid in the tomatoes makes up for that missing characteristic here.

Decanted for an hour. Clean red fruits, lots of it, also with a bit of smoky bacon on the nose. The palate hits with quite a bit of sweetness, tannins seem to be quite resolved, full-bodied, lots of fruit. This won't be getting better than this, a nice wine, on the fruity side. Went very well with grilled pork, egg plant and champignon.

PNP and served with smoked ribs & pork tenderloin. Needed 30 minutes of airtime to shine (touch of alcohol singed the nose but this went away with airtime). Medium purple color & throwing some sediment. Garrigue, floral, dark cherry, tobacco on nose. Medium body, high acidity & medium+ finish. Dark cherry, raspberry, touch of black pepper on palate - acidity keeps this from being flabby. Very enjoyable. For $20USD+/- a re-buy. This has improved from my last tasting ~ 2 years ago. 91+

Double decanted. Moderate sediment. First pour 1 hour later: Medium red, but slightly cloudy. Great bouquet of dark berries. On the palate, lots of fruit in balance with acids and tannins. Finish of medium length and with a bit of heat. (Alcohol=15%). Day 2: Not much change, but probably slightly better on day one.

Deep ruby core, going almost all the way to the rim. Nose has black cherry, raisin, licorice, spice, and (ugh) dark chocolate. Palate followed the nose, but with a meaty aspect to it as well. Ripe and soft tannins. Medium acidity. Finish not particularly long, and bitter (like dark chocolate.) Mildly complex, but as normal, not my cup of tea. My rating due to my perceived "disjointed" aspect of the flavors not working well together tied with the bitter finish. Interesting to see how others might view it. Probably good QPR for those who like this style, but for me, can't wait to get these southern Rhone blends out of my cellar.
Good QPR. A firm wine that rewards decanting and a little rest. Poured the first glass from the bottle and decanted the rest. Softened up and smoothed the back transition into the finish. Drank fine over a couple days. Red fruits, loam, currant. I think it has some room to improve based upon the amount of fruit left.

First off, if you have any bottles of this, save them and enjoy them later! Not because its drinking well, it definitely is. But mainly because this bottle has character. You've got the dirt in the wine, the darker fruits like black cherry, black currant, and blackberry. You also have some tobacco notes and peppercorns (black or green). As it opens up, you have some nice spice notes and more of the fruit coming out.
In a few years, this will be even better!

Age has done this wine well -- we last drank this 1.5 yrs ago and the wine required a 1.5 hr decant. This is no longer true -- this bottle drank well straight from the wine fridge, with mellowed tannins. Plum and dark fruit dominate. Great QPR.

Decanted for about 20 mins. I was very curious about this wine, a relatively cheap Languedoc (I got it for 13.50€) that is getting very good reviews here in CT. Since Languedoc is one of my favourite regions, I wonder how this compares to the many other great wines I've had from the region. Straight off this is a very fruity wine, lots of dark berries with a slight hint of barnyard on the nose. The palate surprises, quite elegant given the fruity nose, good tannins, a slight smoky finish to it, good elegant fruit. Yes, this is good, compares well with others I've had from further south in the Minervois.

Showing much better than this did a month or two back, this deep purple inked wine was filled with taut dark berry fruit, kirsch, with some peppercorn and chewy tannins which worked well with the acid and a load of secondary garrigue. It still needs time as it became disjointed late into the evening where the tannins and acids became harsh ad the greener flavors started to outweigh the fruit, but a very good value wine and interesting for the tariff. Decent finish with drying tannins.

Tasting note following about 2 cases to date. Needs a full 2hr decant at the moment, and lots of sediment starting to show... This is hitting its stride and will be at peak drinking for the next 5 to 8 years. Great density and concentration for the price, although little aromatics or complexity. Really age-worthy. For the price though a fantastic QPR. Go for the mags, from 2020-2025 (I rate these at 92pts).

Tannic, but sweet fruits and plenty of acid for the first hour after opening this interesting wine of deep purple. After that first hour, the fruit quickly faded to the background where serious garrigue, green peppercorn and earth seemed to dominate the palate with that faint blackberry compote in the background. The finish was intriguing as it was very much the taste of fresh rosemary in the mouth that lasted for minutes. I think this wine needs more time in the cellar, but it makes a decent food wine. Potential upside.

This wine needs some air time to open up. A little closed and tannic when first opened.
Got better on the second night - moderate fruit, cherry, spice and vanilla. A little alcohol on the nose.
Okay for the price for a daily drinker - but needs some more time to smooth out and integrate. Will give my bottles another couple of years before I try another.

So I'm thinking this is the definition of QPR for a serious wine fan. I really am a fan right now, even at open, so not sure of the life on this puppy, at least in this household. Love the base of this... the grenache is pretty solid, and the syrah added some depth to it.

This opaque ruby wine, produced for America, can best be described as one made in an "international" style. Ripe boysenberry, blackberry, vanilla and smoke dominate both the nose and palate. Full-bodied, round, heavily-extracted and heavily-oaked, it serves up its flavors with big sweet tannins and hot alcohol (despite being served at 60° F). There is no loss of fruit (nor heat) in the middle and the finish is at least medium in length, but one can only conclude that this wine was made for those who love to flirt with over-the-top ripeness. Not my style, but there are many who will love this offering. I suspect that it will not be a long-lived wine, as there are many variables here which could easily throw it out of balance. Drink now-2019.

Not decanted, consumed over ~1 1/2 hours without food. Again, a dark, dense, smooth wine with black fruit dominating at first, but opening up later to show nuances of chocolate, smoke, anise, and eventually some forest/herbal notes which added interest and made it the best bottle of this that we've opened. On the weighty and extracted side of things, but still quite tasty.

Not decanted, consumed over multiple evenings. The first evening, this was quite consistent with my 9/13/2013 note, with extracted dark fruit taking center stage (not in an unpleasant way). When we finished it two evenings later, it had fallen apart a little bit, moving in a porty/raisiny direction. Its structure also stood out more, with acid showing prominently and tannins becoming more noticeably mouth-coating. Based on this showing, it certainly has the structure to age, but I'm not sure how the fruit will hold up. Scorewise, I think I'd put this at 89ish on Day 1 & 86ish on Day 3.

Not decanted, consumed over 1 1/2 hours. Our first bottle of this, it's a darker, denser wine than I expected. There was a good amount of ripe black cherry/blackberry fruit to it, but chocolatey and spicy/meaty notes were just as prominent to us. Decent acid balance for such a weighty, extracted wine, and not any heat on this bottle. Maybe a little flat/closed this evening, but reading other notes, that was probably our fault for not giving it enough air. 88+ and a good QPR at the price paid.

This is quite an over performance on the QPR scale and Redguy says almost all. We disagree only with the soy sauce - was not found in our btl. To us, the most striking feature of this wine is the tantalizing acid-tannin-fruit balance that promises an even greater delivery in the medium time range. We boughht a case last year of the '09 and only have 5 btls left. And this wine is much more promising. This is stunning and displays lashes of garrigue to prove it. Wow! 2 to go. Next one in ~2016. With Yushi-san at La Verdura in Yokohama.
- Garnet color with medium forming legs. It's somewhat balanced with a medium body. Angular texture with a long finish - Great nose, but not as pleasing to the pallet as I had hoped. Not bad by any means, so I may revisit in the coming years.

Oaky, liqueur-like, though non-sweet, nose that shows dark, smoke-dried fruits, tobacco, a certain medicinal quality (similar to prescription cough syrup), and pepper. This is an Uber-concentrated, 'thick' wine, like a dry Port, but not gloopy in the least. Substantive, gripping, stalwart, with a sanguine element. Balance could be a little better, and the mid-palate is a little 'empty' for such a well-made offering. Time should mend both of these minor issues. Indeed, this is a great example of a wine that needs to rest for a while, precisely because it has the requisite qualities that demand aging. Tannins are present in abundance, albeit interwoven into the wine's consistency. This may score 92-94 with proper cellaring.

I was at Lukas trying to find another wine, unsuccessfully, when I heard the siren call of this wine. The note on the display case said that it was worthy of aging for a decade or more. Intrigued, I purchased a bottle with a thought to buying a case if the wine lived up to its billing. It did. Over the course of an hour this uptight Languedoc beauty revealed a complexity that I plan to familiarize myself with over the coming years. The nose was herbal, bay leaves pine needles. On the palate, black cherries, ripe, dark plums (Patricia). Followed by a lengthy finish.

Dark purple, ruby rim, and glass staining concentration; nose of dark fruit, wild berries, garrigue, herbs de provence, gamey note almost like a barrel sample, and some schist; powerful, compact and tangy purple fruit that coats the palate and finishes with soft tannin even though this is a full bodied wine capable of lasting a decade and ideally in need of 1-2 years in the cellar.

This is a crowd pleaser. I'd say it's semi-bodied wine with a deep purple color. The nose of this wine is great and enticing but its greatest asset is its balance. Another nice showing though I should have read my previous review (long decant...) vs. just sending it right through the vinturi.
This starts with prominent aromas of cherry liqueur, berries, and resin followed by earthy berry and dusty leather flavors. Plenty of tannins and acidity. Being critical, everything doesn't come together seamlessly but this is very good with lots of flavors. This walks a wobbling line between old world and new world.

Nose: Very nice nose filled with tones of black pepper, dark red fruits, black fruits, kirsch and some spice tones as well. There is a ripeness to the tones, but it is pretty well dialed in right now.
Taste: There is a nice plushness to the medium/full feel with a bit of weight behind it. The tannins are on the sneakier side and add some good support along with very good tones of black pepper, dark red fruits and some spice tones.
Overall: This was a pop n pour, but I did let it sit in my glass for about a half hour before fully getting to it. This is an appealing wine at a good price and offers up a slightly more forward take. It probably could use a little down time to fully come together as the mid-palate is slightly lacking right now.

Very good, not great. This is a new world wine trying desperately to maintain an old world charm. Not sure if it succeeds. Either way, a solid QPR and a great weeknight wine. It could mellow and become better and I will sit on my remaining lot to give it the benefit of the doubt. But it must be said - this is nowhere near as good as the huge press indicates.

Ripe red-black fruit, dust and Pine needles on the nose. Weighty, soft and spicy on the palate. Almost Zinfandel-like. Has a bit of a mid-palate gap before the moderate finish.

Popped and poured. Airtime or cellartime recommended. Tight and not offering up much right now, but obviously well-made, concentrated, and ready for the big time. Will check back in a year and be prepared to decant and wait.

A blend of Grenache and Syrah. Very smooth taste of dark fruit, herbs and spice. A very good wine for the price of $16.99. Not so well known. Upped rating a point on re-evaluation.

Could use more structure for my tastes but the dark blackberry and plum type fruits are effectively married to chocolately wood notes and spice in this rich and satisfying wine. A moderate amount of alcohol shows itself but not to its ruin. Decent complexity, though there seems more to this than is presently offered. Silky, glycerin laden texture within a med+ body mildly tannic frame. Good substance here and a good buy for the price.

Extremely dark black ruby. Brooding and deep with copious amounts of glycerine. Nose has lots of minerality behind which appears to be a fruit bomb waiting to emerge. For now, lots of smoldering dark fruits lurking. This nose is hinting at greatness, but is cloaked for now. Weighty wine in the palate, tannic and rich, with lots of promise showing in a long finish. Overall, a very ripe, high alcohol wine that for now has decent balance. How will it age? Good enough right now with a juicy burger or steak. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.

PnP consumed over 2 nights, both showing the same. Very dark ruby toward purple with heavy, ripe aromas of cassis, baked blackberry pie, baked figs, plum sauce. A mess of a wine, as far as I'm concerned, as it shows heat, extraction and a thick mouthfeel but very little else. A cocktail wine, NOT a food wine (maybe used in cooking, but not afterward). For shame, Eric Solomon, for shame. If scoring, maybe 86, if feeling generous. 15% abv, drink thru 2017
I've got 3 bottles left that I will open for friends that like this kind of monolithic gloop, none for me, thanks. Attractively packaged, though :D

Required a 1.5 hr decant for the tannins to settle down and aromas and flavors to really emerge. After that... quite good. Quite dark in color for grenache, with strong aromas and flavors of dried fruit, prune, plum, and a touch of spice. The tannins mellow out after some decanting, but I still feel this could benefit from some age. The finish is moderately short with a touch of complexity.

reminiscent of last year's prodigious effort, this has potential to be great once it settles down. right now it is a lot of grape, but i am fairly confident this will be an easy quaffer.

Popped and poured. Inky purple in the glass. On the nose, leather, wet earth and smoked meat. On the palate, full-bodied with blackberry, cherry and tar. Weighty, but nevertheless, elegant. Sufficiently tannic to improve with a few years in the bottle, but I would enjoy now. Excellent QPR.

Nice fruit, moderate tannins and complexity. Although still very young, nice bottle of wine. Moderate heat from the alcohol. Should get several more years in the cellar or a long decant.
Great QPR.
Bought 6 more bottles to put away for awhile. Could easily hit 92+ points with enough cellar time.

Would have thought this was a rhone ranger from Paso Robles if tasting blind due to the very ripe fruit and the noticeable alcohol. Though this is a relative bargain compared to most wines from that region. Was expecting a bit more structure and less ripeness from the 2010 vintage, but this has ripe currant and blackberry fruit with a little booziness on the midpalate and some heat on the finish that hurt my score some. Still a nice wine in the ripe New World style that has some good balancing acidity (also like Paso wines).

--- COLOR: Deep purple-garnet NOTE: Not much in the way of formal notes here, but this is a great QPR. Nose is nicely pungent and fruit-forward, the mouth was very peppery Grenache, but it went well with rich pot roast and gravy. It's definitely a food wine. The finish is average.

Excellent wine. Was worried about the high ABV but it's not very noticble. Although its more detectable on the nose than palate.
Deep ruby color. Deep red fruit nose...palate is juicy but not jammy. Nice finish with moderate tannins and some lingering minerals. Good QPR. Paired great with enchiladas.

This is dense, concentrated and layered with new characteristics unfolding with each swirl of the glass. Everything is wrapped up with a luscious mouth-coating finish. 92+

I can see how some feel this is overripe. It is teetering on the edge but does have some structure to match the richness. Missing some complexity that may come through once the fruit settles down a bit.

Received shipment last week, opened today, full nose of licorice, sage and pine with great red raspberries. Great integration, excellent melding of flavors, this wine provides an excellent drinking experience. His is not an elegant wine but more rustic and drinks well.. I wont be able to hold this too long, for the money, this drinks well above its price point

Not sure I'm drinking the same wine as the other reviews here... Benefitted from decanting ~8h. Pretty, pure nose. Very sappy with perfect balance and a long, seamless finish. Bit of cassis with some forest / red berry fruit. Despite it's make-up, impresses as being almost St. Emilion-like. Not the least bit over-the-top. Hits well above its weight. Highly recommended.

Dark color. Nose: Leather, black cherry,mint-herbs, spice. Palate: Leather, dark cherry, raspberry, earth, spice. Full bodied with young tannins and moderate acidity. Finish: Leather, tannin, black cherry, herbs, earth, forest floor and some spice. Medium+ in length. This is a great QPR and a re-buy in a young wine. Please be sure to decant as I had this glass decanting for 3 hours and it could still use some time. 91+

Infanticide but this one should drink well young. No sediment on the cork and just a few crystals at the bottom of the bottle.
Bright ruby red in the glass with lots of long legs. Wonderful nose of dark cherry fruit and a hint of…pine smoke? Fairly tannic throughout but with nice spicy fruits showing through. This wine is drinking fine now but will improve with some more time sideways.

Immediately upon opening it's quite pleasant, balanced, refreshing, interesting, no rough aspects. Very well integrated tannins and oak pairing up with fairly intense and interesting fruit and just enough acid. Goldilocks - neither sweet nor sour.

Chalky minerality and clean carpet on the nose, plus some dustiness and fresh washed fruit.
More chalk and minerality on the palate, with solid tannic grip and a quick blast of tart cherry acid.
The above is from night two. When first opened the wine was more primary, with sexy licorice, tobacco, and sweet earth notes.
This stuff stains the glass a bit as you swirl, and leaves long long legs.
This wine is terrific, and I'm glad I bought a bunch of it. However, it needs time. Maybe 91 points in two years?

Full bodied power. Firm tannins. Feels like they took an old world French wine formula and let it ripen a bit extra, and extracted it a bit extra for the American market. The alcohol is noticeable. Still a nice wine in a new world style.

Really enjoyed the bottles that I drank last summer, not sure if this was an off bottle, but not nearly as good as I remember.
Still a big nose of flowers and dark fruit, but tastes quite astringent and bitter... so no score.

This opened up nicely after several hours of decanting. Bloody blackberries and bay leaf on the nose. Plums, cloves, spice, and tart on the palate. Smoke and tobacco on the finish. Paired well with grilled rib roast, roasted potatoes, and roasted pepper salad.

This is a crowd pleaser. I'd say it's semi-bodied wine with a deep purple color. The nose of this wine is great and enticing but its greatest asset is its balance. I liked this wine very much, however dont expect a complex wine. It's a great every day drinker or great for a get together win friends.

Bright purple in color and 15% ABV. Red fruits, lavender and licorice explode from the glass. The wine is concentrated, plush and coats the mouth with ripe, sweet fruit. Framboise, cherry liqueur, asian spices, violets, plums and earth on the palate. The finish is long and sweet. What a delicious wine!

This is really a good wine for the price $16.99. My second bottle in last few months. Very smooth. Nice fruit. Medium weight. Had some higher priced wines recently that were not as good as this. So, will buy more to have on-hand if still available.
