On P&P, I was immediately accosted by that heady "old wine barrel in a cave" scent that to me is what secondary flavors and scents are all about in the best Cabernet based wines, with serious but lovely cow sh*t perfume. I view cow shi*t as the midpoint between the acridity of pig sh*t and the weedy scent of horse shi*t. [As an aside, I like the horse sh*t end of the shit spectrum, but still prefer the middle point of cow sh*t. I don't dig the pig sh*t stank, personally, but I don't view myself as an expert sh*t-sniffer, so my opinions may be sh*t.] So the nose was just effusive, yet there was nothing suggesting the wine was too ripe/overly extracted/too alcoholic/oxidized. The first sip was magical, and it rapidly got better over the hour it lasted. The palate was akin to the brambly St. Juliens I've loved most, crossed with the big boy Pauillacs that get the big scores. On the top, I got beautiful medium cigar box and light cedar, and with time, the copious cassis notes were stunning. Lots of dark, damp earth and surprisingly fresh, deep dark fruit, with minimal residual sweetness. This to me is an outstanding Bordeaux that’s in the middle of its prime drinking window. It speaks to what makes Bordeaux the king of French wines and one of the greatest wine regions in the world.

The two preceding notes are quite accurate. The chocolate and cherry or raspberry notes are propulsive, yet this wine has been softening and is in a beautiful place now. This wine has been steadily growing more complex with each bottle I’ve opened, and its future remains equally open. This is an unusually well made Napa Cab. Wish they were all made with such a judicious touch.

Hoping this is just a bad bottle as I’m a Dragon lover and this one had a bitter and awkward finish.

12/15/2019 11:01:00 AM - Hi Russ. I appreciated your message and am amazed by 2.5 acres of farming! I plant in 12 large raised bed planters in my screened-in pool area, where I grow organically and battle whitefly and spotted molds though I do not have to contend with the iguanas that have taken dominion over the neighborhood. I just harvested Japanese purple sweet potatoes and my star fruit trees are loaded with the winter crop. The mango trees are just starting to set flowers. I have great admiration for your posts in terms of both quality and quantity. My wife and I occasionally attend events at Wine Watch when my ridiculous trial schedule permits, and I sometimes meet up there for events with fellow winos, like the recent annual truffle dinner. I am sending an email to Andy in the event you'd like to meet up, so he can connect us if you email him. I actually only know a few people who are as passionate about wine as me, and I've met them over the years at wine events. By the way, my wife is a lawyer too, and while she seems to qualify as a supertaster, she is far less interested in the pomp and circumstance than me, though she puts up with me. -Brad
