Took this to a Bacchus blind tasting and was very disappointed. Well past its best. Brown, tawny colour with a tarry nose and dried fruit and some peppery notes. I expected a wine of this standing to still be drinking well. The Domaine de la Jannasse 1998 tasted alongside it was still drinking well.

Blind night. Right out the gate, amazing depth with ever so slightly reductive nose, but more so citrus peels and apple blossoms. Pronounced palette, slightly buttered roasted apples, salinity, lemon oil and peel, lean pear and slight citrus pithyness. Insane potential, this is precise and really delicious. I liked it a lot today, it will get better but I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with opening it today. 95++

Real strong Chablis feeling. Intense and rich. Reductive and oxidized at the same time. Tastes balanced and rich, with toasty after taste.
Neutral but long bubbles. Fine structure and complexity.

2007 tends to get no love, but I continue to enjoy the ones I've had. They're just now entering their drinking window and this LB was no exception. If you can get for a good price, this is a very good wine.

The brett reminded me of one particular thing (sweaty vag), that I would classify as neither good nor bad, just unique.

Wine was tightly wound and concentrated. Clearly too young. Interesting nonetheless.

Similar note to a bottle I drank in January of 2021. Good wine, but nothing special, no WOW factor, overpriced to me.

  • Comment posted by Margaux Bro:

8/2/2022 5:41:00 AM - I agree with the other comment. Dunn HM is simply not a wine meant to be trifled with until it's at least 20+ years old. When consumed young, they're just unexciting, tannic, and shut down.

Double decanted 2 hours before going to a restaurant. Truly should have decanted about 2 hours earlier, as it really hit its stride later in the evening. This wine elevated tremendously once food was incorporated, and continued to develop. Very pleasurable wine. If you're opening now I'd suggest a very long decant. It will still age gracefully for another 20+ years.

  • Comment posted by Margaux Bro:

6/21/2022 5:54:00 AM - Normally, I would pop and slow-ox, but I had a sip upon opening and it was super tight and restrained, almost completely shut down. For this bottle, the double decant brought it new life. Either way, it sounds like both of our recent experiences with this wine were memorable, and that's what matters!

Viura (90%), Malvasía (10%). Ageing period in barrels: 6 years, being racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. 12.5% vol.

PnP and observed over several days. Starts with medicinal notes on day one that disappear a bit with air, then it shows oxidative notes, herbs, apricot and lemon zest, high acidity, on the palate rather thin and the finish is dry with bitterness. You must be a big fan of this wine to love it on day 1. Much better 3 days later, but still not where it should be... Then, on day 6 it gets very approachable with good freshness and good mouthfeel. The bitter notes were gone, but the freshness and the fruit is still there, white stone fruits, lemon and lemon zest with only a hint of oxidative notes and mushrooms that brings the complexity to the wine, nice and long finish. Very classic and elegant, a joy when looking at the trend of other wineries that are creating heavy monsters these days.

I'm a bit surprised about the below notes, for sure, this is an outstanding vintage of Viña Tondonia, but it requires an additional 5 to 10 years to show its entire beauty (if drinking now, give it at least 4 to 6 hours in the decanter), for now it is more an intellectual thing and requires a lot of patience. A good alternative is Viña Gravonia 2010, this is already much more approachable today.

Purchased from Benchmark auction, my bottle was high shoulder with decrepit cork that pushed into the bottle largely intact as I opened three hours before dinner. Decanted with sieve then and didn’t taste until just before dining, though bouquet promised fine old wine. That first taste was delicious, poured two glasses and decanted again into crystal for table. Did not notice much evolution. In evening light, color appeared dark without noticeable browning. Tannins resolved, nice red fruit acidity, elegant, well balanced. A real treat. 20 years ago, Parker said this 1975 “fabulous” yet fully mature.

  • Comment posted by Margaux Bro:

5/31/2022 5:56:00 AM - I purchased a bottle potentially from the same lot at benchmark. It was absolutely one of the worst corks I've ever dealt with and I was using a durand. Port tongs probably would have been the better choice lol. Absolutely stunned that the underlying wine was very much still good.

Enjoyed side by side with 2012 Scarecrow. This was a much more refined and elegant wine with the scarecrow being a bit more of a bruiser with lots of french oak. The Opus had an odd funk to the nose that I had trouble placing, but juice itself was fantastic! Its drinking window is just getting started.

Just a little bit of a funky nose that blew off quickly. After that some red fruit, a little cinnamon-nutmeg thing going. In the mouth a bit darker fruit, a touch of spice, soft and round but enough acidity not to come across as flabby. Easy to drink and delicious. We'll wait on the next bottle a couple years to see where it goes but certainly no harm in drinking now.

Brought to a tasting menu dinner, and paired with duck and lamb courses. Stood upright for 3 days prior to serving, but this was still packed with sediment. Popped at the beginning of the meal and decided not to decant, because the first taste was impeccable. Let it slow ox in the bottle for about an hour before consuming with the food pairing. This bottle was in a truly perfect spot, and was a much lighter wine than I expected (not surprising given the 13.5% abv). Anyway, I highly recommend drinking now. I’m going to be on a mission to seek out additional bottles of this vintage.

Light, Delicate, still full of life. Very mellow, but in a nice spot with a touch of acidity and bing cherry that almost tastes burgundian. This bottle couldn't have been in better shape and more fulfilling. Probably the best diamond creek I've had.

8/3/2021 3:46:00 AM - Likely bottle variation. I acquired mine from a private collector (which was stored properly during his possession but unknown previously). For decanting, I set the bottle upright in the cellar a week ago, and I double decanted for sediment & strained with cheesecloth immediately before serving. For a benchmark, we had 1992 Togni Napa, and 97 Margaux served alongside, and the DC was better than both IMO. Hope this helps!
