Community Tasting Notes (14) Avg Score: 89.8 points

  • 12x Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993: All wines tasted single blind. Not decanted. As anticipated, the 1983 vintage prevailed in our comparative tasting, scoring 8 to 2 wins against the 1993 vintage, with two ties. The structured, classic ’83s exhibited greater depth and harmony compared to the ‘93s, which tended to be simpler, sometimes slightly green and dry, or at their best, fresh and light. However, in both vintages, aside from a few notable labels, many wines were evidently beyond their peak. The standout was, unsurprisingly, the Margaux (94pts). Tasting the some of the same ’83s a second time a few days later with decanting showed a marked improvement, highlighting the need of aeration.

TN: The nose offers a medium intensity of herbal notes, minerality, tobacco, and dark and red berries, growing more complex over time. Quite good and inviting. On the palate, it’s fresh with fine tannins, good tension, and an airy texture. Flavors include dark red berries, herbs, and crushed rocks with oak hints. Initially well-balanced, it loses some strength and becomes slightly drier towards the end. 91pts, easily winning the duel against the 1983 (80pts) which is past peak.

  • Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993 face-off: Fine aging notes, although somewhat blurry. Cherry and red currant fruit, fresh in character. Dried herbs. The fresh style transports well to the palate, although aromatic intensity there was lacking and tannin felt pretty dry. A rare instance of the ’93 being in better shape than the ‘83.

  • Mature but in great shape. Tile color but left very little sediments. Beautiful clarity of decanted properly. Very scented bouquet. Cedar and mocha and mostly secondary aromas. Fully mature with a softer body and very soft tannins. If the fruit is there, it is a very evolved fruit. A little meaty bacon and tobacco. Very enjoyable with a simply prepared beef or lamb roast. Wonderfully mature but vibrant in a geriatric way, sort of like someone in retirement age but plays good tennis and can still ride a bike for 15 miles (I will let you guess if this is me or not). It is a lovely wine.

  • Huge bouquet of clove or nutmeg. Still quite red despite being 22 years. This was bought at release and had been in a very cold cellar ever since. Nice balance of red fruit, spices and maturing complexity. Many years left but this is peak if you want a balance of brilliance and complexity.

  • This bottle was even better than the one tasted in 2012. Mature but Nice taste of leather, spice and good long finish.
