  • good lower neck level and cork, decanted 2+ hours, colour very dense, almost opaque, still relatively youthful with little brown, deep, rich, sweet fruit nose, classic Penfolds somewhat extracted style, within this style though very good indeed, real depth and quite complex, palate also rich and powerful but with nice balance and lift provided by the integrated acidity and tannins, persistent aftertaste, a very good 389 that is true to its style, now in the optimum drinking window but will stay there and gradually develop more tertiary character over the next 10-15 years

  • Decanted one hour. Raspberry and strawberry flavors with cedar and eucalyptus. Slight hint of tannins. It has lost some depth and complexity.

  • decanted 3 hrs, perfect mid-neck level, good cork but rather short considering the recommendation on the back label for “medium to long term cellaring”, still opaque black-red colour, even with hints of purple, only slightest brown at rim, youthful, warm, rich spicy fruit on the nose, palate typically Penfolds, quite extracted and dry on the mid-palate, soft fruit, good balance, length and persistence, again distinctly dry on the finish, overall very nice, at this stage still more robust than fine, still only at the beginning of the optimal drinking window, good pairing with venison

  • Rich and still prominent tannins. The fruit was softer, maybe muted, but perhaps it would have benefited from being open or in the glass longer. A very fine wine but give it time after opening
