Big whiff of eucalyptus on the nose, spicy, some peppercorn, blackberry fruit leather, labelled 11.8% but feels higher. Good, and not as far off from modern renditions as you might expect.

My belated birthday celebration with Jess (Wimborne): Assessed, recorked, and recapsuled under supervision of official Penfolds Winemaker on 25th November 2002. Pop and poured. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark chocolate, blueberries, and some green herbs. Developing. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium- alcohol, smooth round medium- tannins, medium+ body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of chocolate, blueberries, blackcurrant, spice, and a very mild green herbal undertone probably from the Cabernet. Long finish. Very good quality. This has an Old World Bordeaux feel to it, but with a bit more intensity to remind you it's still a New World wine. Feels like it could last another 10 years. Would not have guessed 1980 if I had drunk this blind.
