  • All four bottles bought were vinegar. Too bad. Was looking forward to it. Sent back to benchmark wine for refund.

  • Neapolitan Pizza (Dan's House): Light ruby; aromatic, red fruit; palate is a bit overly alcoholic, 17%, red fruit; finish is short-medium. 82

  • A non-interventionist Cannonau (which the winery claims is a very close relative to Grenache, but not identical to it); the vineyard (Badde Nigolosu) is cultivated completely without any herbicides, fungicides or insecticides - in a worst-case scenario the winery actually would rather have the vineyard lose all its fruit instead of "poisoning" the land. The wine is made completely hands-free in cement vats, so the wine never sees oak. The only non-interventionist procedure this wine sees is the addition of minimum effective amount of sulfites at bottling. The wine is a whopping 17% in alcohol, attained naturally through fermentation. Tasted blind.

Luminous, very transparent strawberry red with a light but noticeable, mature brick hue. Very aromatic, expressive and slightly funky nose with aromas of strawberry jam, chopped celery, some licorice, a little bit of raisin juice and a touch of prunes. The nose seems to be evolving all the time, being different during every sniff. The wine is quite full-bodied, smooth and very ripe and sweet on the palate - up to the point it seels that there must be some residual sugar left in the wine. Although perhaps it can be also that high alcohol. There are very sunny and rich flavors of strawberry jam, some alcohol heat, a little bit of bitterness, a hint of prunes and a touch of raisins. The wine is very supple and smooth with quite modest acidity and practically no discernible tannins whatsoever. The finish is very rich, quite warm and long with some noticeable bitterness and a touch of tannic grip that sets of the sweetness from the concentrated notes of raisins, strawberry jam and stewed plums quite nicely.

I was pretty sure this was a Dingac or other Plavac Mali from Croatia, because I am quite familiar with those wines and the hot, raisiny style reminded me a bit of them - although I was still a bit iffy, because this wine didn't show any of those tannins Plavac Malis are renowned for. I was not particularly surprised that this turned out to be a Cannonau, but the 17% alcohol did raise some eyebrows. Very unique, pure and rich in style, making the wine feel quite porty, yet with its own, idiosyncratic style. Definitely something very interesting, although I'm not sure how a wine this rich, sweet and soft is supposed to be drunk. It's imposible to imagine it pairing with anything and drunk on its own, it gets rather dull and heavy quite quickly. The high quality is obvious here, even though I must admit that the wine really isn't my style.

  • For me, a fantastic bottle. Transparent red. Medium body. Intense sweet fruit -- very nice at this point in its life -- good acidity and non-instrusive tannins. How rewarding.

  • Similar to previous notes. Still mostly tannins and acids. Has become a little more leathery across the palate. Drink or hold, not sure where it goes from here.
