Beautiful garnet colour. Green pepper and mushroom on the nose. Red fruit and brambles with hint of cinnamon . Fine tannins, nice acidity and great length. Delicious.

(La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino) Snow Closure REMINDER: Due to the forecast snowpocalypse, we are tentatively planning to *close at 3pm today (Friday)*, and we will be *closed all day tomorrow (Saturday).* If conditions deteriorate, we may close earlier than 3pm today. If that happens, we'll reach out individually to any list members who currently have Friday appointments. ----- Hello friends. We have excellent, albeit time-limited, pricing on a lovely Brunello di Montalcino today:Logistics note first: we have a hold on a solid parcel of this at today’s TPU tag, pricing that is as good as I see nationally (note: those top three prices are all for 375ml half-bottles). We need to place our order Monday morning, so please endeavor to place order requests by the end of the weekend. As usual, we’ll aim to build a latecomer buffer, but those are never guaranteed. Wine Advocate: Copyrighted material withheld. Vinous: Copyrighted material withheld. La Gerla is a classic Montalcino producer, I believe the 35th Brunello producer in a region that now numbers some 300 wineries. They pull their Brunello from two estate vineyards. The first (Canalicchio) was planted in 1976 and 1982, so we’re looking at 40-year-old Sangiovese Grosso plants there. The soil is all marl and limestone; it looks like this. The second vineyard (Castelnuovo dell'Abate) is out towards the southeastern edge of the appellation. It’s younger (1998-planted); also sandier, siltier, and steeper, as you can see in this pic. Their Sangio is aged for four years before release; three in the traditional large Slavonian botti, and then another year in bottle. It clocks in at 13.5% listed alc and pours red with garnet flecks beginning to emerge; typical for Brunello. Also typical is the evocative nose, with layers of fresh and dried fruits, dust, and exotic star anise. Can I combine the two drinking windows above? For me, it’s Larner’s open (2020) and D’Agata’s close (2029). I think you lay this down for a year and then watch it evolve over the course of the next decade. The classic pairing would be a bistecca, but with the umami kick of this wine, I’d also pair it with any number of funky/savory dishes: mushroom-studded risotto or perhaps a Bolognese funkified with the addition of some chicken livers.

Cherry, blueberry, plum, but not too fruity. Well balanced, not strong. Medium bodied.

Almost a year since my last bottle and this is still going strong. It is ready now, but will last several more years, but no need to wait really.
