Somewhat intense fruit on the nose: cherry, plum and cassis. Some balsamico, brussels sprout, raisin and leather. Medium to full-bodied with softened tannins and just adequate acidity. Some pencil shavings, oak, herbs and leather. Slightly raisiny aftertaste with ok length. I would have liked to see a more structured effort - well this is a warm year wine. Decent fun anyway.

poured into a wide bottom decanter and consumed over 2-3 hours. Red fruit, cherry, damp earth and mushroomy aromas on the nose. Sour cherry, leather, mushroomy/earthy flavors and some faint spice flavors, very drying and astringent on the finish. Good, but not a great QPR at $29

This was an exchange wine from a colleague at work who I occasionally "trade" with. We each like trying new wines and bring a couple bottles of things we really enjoy to trade. She had this wine originally at one of Umberto Menghi restaurants. She thought it to be a great spaghetti wine. In our case, we tried it with pappardalle with braised short rib and oxtail. We put a bit of cocco powder in the sauce (our secret) to increase the richness, and I thought this wine would pair well accordingly. It certainly did! It is a real contrast to the Ruffino Chianti, that's for sure. A very old world flavour profile...drinking well now, but definitely decant ahead of time. The tannins are still there, but not cheek puckering. They add a nice balance to the dark chocolate, "muddy" (in a good way), beet root flavours. My colleague was right...this would go great also with a meaty red sauce and pasta...and some garlicky bread...Mmmmm...89 pts.

Dry, delicious darkness. Reminiscent of a powerful SuperTuscan. Full of deep dark fruit and highly (dangerously?) drinkable. Smells light and fresh, the perfect balance. No wood, just clean fruit.
