  • 1979 isn't a particularly strong vintage in Tuscany, and at age 34 it shows. I think this bottle, purchased at auction, was actually reasonably well-stored, as it showed none of the heat or oxidation notes that so often mar old wines from this region. The color was a gorgeous, almost transparent ruby--it didn't look older than 10-15 max. But the wine was just very, very tired--you could still smell the sour cherry but only barely taste it, there was a distinct whiff of balsamic vinegar in the nose, and all that was left on the palate was a jolt of acid. This didn't develop the earth or smoke or leather tones I look for in mature traditional Brunello--and that I found in a 1982 of the same wine. I'm afraid this ship has sailed.
