  • Deep garnet in color with slight breaking edges. Aromatic nose of cherries, leather and a hint of tobacco. Taste of dark cherries, leather, tobacco, and menthol. Well into tertiary flavors but some tannins and fruit remain. Nice balance. Tasted next to the 1987 and it showed better balance and structure. Tasted without decanting. Past prime but paired nicely with lamb. Drink now.

  • From magnum, still alive and kicking. Bit of brick at edges, but color is deep and opaque. Dried cherry and cedar predominate, with hints of oak, tanned leather and blackberry. Drink now.

  • Decanted at 4pm and tasted through 9pm. Translucent, bright medium garnet with little sign of age. Nose had tar, menthol and cherries. Palate was very soft and easy to drink both with and without food. Acidity was bright. Flavors included the tar, cherry and menthol along with a distinct eucalyptus on the finish which was moderately long. Delicious with grilled steaks.

  • Celebrated our 25th Anniversary with this 25 year old bottle I had been saving for the occasion. The cork was 75% stained, but the top 25% of cork was like new and the wine was in good shape. If blindfolded, you would know this was an old wine for sure from the nose alone. Some browning. Got tobacco and a little leather on the tongue - but the fruit has faded - there was only a hint of it left in the background. As we consumed, it was really cool to think how the grapes that made up this wine were actually still hanging on the vine as we were saying our vows. However, we also both came to the conclusion that, at least in this stage of our love affair with wine, we like them younger, bigger and more vibrant (that's what she said!"). If you have any of these, time to drink up while they still have a little something left.

  • This bottle was a good deal better than the last.. Initially it had the burnt off note in the previous bottle but with a hour of breathing it improved considerably. It is fairly big with a rich round mouthfeel and lots of blackberry, vanilla and a little earthiness. Moderately long aftertaste. Nice with grilled venison blackstrap on goat cheese crostini.
As I had the last of the bottle I noted how much it had changed and in fact improved. At almost 6 hours after opening it seemed to get much richer and more expansive on the nose. I would say I'd look to raise the rating 1-3 points if that had been my first sip. Next bottle I'll let it breath a long time before drinking.
