Really drinking beautifully right now. Paired with Paella.
While the Cayuse funk was present on the nose, the years have been kind to this GOK and it wasn't overly reductive or too barnyard-y. Fruit was just lovely with fully integrated tannins. Just damn fine juice and a beautiful match with Paella. I can't see a lot of upside to holding these, but I don't think it will fall off very quick, likely a gradual decline.

Christmas dinner, needed something to pair with a smoked sausage cassoulet. My first time with this vintage. Decanted about 30 minutes, drank over an hour+.
Medium ruby, opaque color. Nose of red fruits, earth and bacon fat. Palate of dark raspberry, cherry, baked strawberry, plums, baking spice and savory. Spice persists through the mid palate and finish. Smooth, velvety texture. A sweetness running through the finish. Medium/full body, long finish.
This is a really gorgeous wine. A lot going on here, the spice is what I was looking for in the pairing. Assuming Christophe Baron was going for a Cote Rotie cousin...he got it...:) Wine is in a great spot, decant helps, it continued to improve in the glass over the time we drank it, maybe give it a full hour in the decanter. Well stored bottles should drink at this level for a while - highly recommend opening one at this point if you have more than one!

Similar to prior note after a 2 hr. double decant, but better! I could not stop sipping it. Except for the color, I would not believe this was not syrah from Cote Rotie. Ready to drink

Ruby red in color. 14.2% ABV. Textbook Cayuse nose of cherries, olive brine, game and herbs. Medium body with notable acidity. Rich and savory. Black cherry, umami, charred meats and olives on the palate. The finish is long and seamless. Cayuse has this timeless quality to their wines so I suspect this could age longer but I just can’t imagine it will get better than it is right now. Special Grenache.

Funk nose (as expected), relatively light coloring. Opened and decanted for two hours, served with lamb. Fully opened in about three hours and didn't disappoint as a Cayuse.

Pop.and pour, drank over about 6 hrs, and (still) improved over the time open. Has been in my cellar since release. Rather reduced to start, and that didn't completely disappear even with lots of time open. The nose is so distinctive, with raspberry, perfume, and loads of rocks funk, mixed with the bit of.reduction. On the palate, the acidity is downright soft, and this gets by, in my view, by its fruit. There is a touch of secondary development, but for my palate, this comes off as flat...I would even say somewhat tired. There is stll fruit there, which mirrors the nose, and that is what makes this compelling. This has a purity to it that really took four or five hours to come out. This worked better with my lamb chops than my wife's steak.

This is typically my least favorite Cayuse bottling, but tonight's GOK was very disappointing. A bit dilute and muddled. More funk than substance. Has a nice nose, but I gotta agree a bit with GBFAN's assessment...if this and a Borsao Tres Picos ($20) were inserted into a blind line up, I think most people would opt for the Borsao...

Exceptional wine, had the funk profile of many Cayuse wines we love. But great fruit profile. Very long finish. Maybe gave it too long of a decant (2 hrs). Wonderful wine with many more years of enjoyment

Fantastic GOK. It's all there: Bacon, iodine, smoked meat, Cayuse funk, seductive fruit. 2 hour decant and then drunk over several hours. I don't see any upside to further aging, but there's also years of life left here.

We shared this with friends on 1/17/17. It had a strong, rich and funky bouquet of black cherry, plum, strawberry, moldy wood, garrigue, herb and spice aromas. The palate was rich and layered with flavors of black cherry, plum, herb and spice.

Dark rust in color. 14.2% ABV. Savory nose of red fruits, olives, incense and smoke. Medium body with light to medium acidity. Plush and somewhat funky with great underlying structure. Cherries, saline, cabbage and grilled meats on the palate. The wine has a stunning finish. World class Grenache. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

Pop & pour. Super-funky "Rocks" nose, with leather, roasted meat, scorched earth. Attack is all red fruit, with umami and leather and a bit of flabbiness in the midpalate, ending in a smooth but lackluster finish of espresso, and a zing of acid. This did not improve with air over the 2 hours we consumed it. I would recommend opening these if you have any left. Drink now.

PnP. Some of the usual Cayuse funk at first, which steps back a bit after a few minutes in the glass. This has all of the rustic savory flavors that one associates with many of the Cayuse lineup. The nose has some nice red fruits, brown spices (hints of cinnamon, clove), with hints of chocolate, wet stone, and one can go on and on. Very meaty and sinewy on the nose, but paired with some nice fruit. The acid seems a bit low at first, making the palate slightly dull – soft flavor of chocolate, with some hints of berries. This evolves a bit, with some acid emerging to lift the flavors. The center seems a bit closed – suggesting this may need some more time in the bottle. Still very lovely to drink right now. 92
Update – days 2 and 3 (no refrigeration or vacuum or other preservation used, and with day 3 having perhaps ½ inch in the bottle) this got better and even a bit more nuanced. The last bit on day 4 was still very pleasant. Everything is nicely integrated and smooth. I can definitely distinguish this from the syrahs – there is more bright fruit here, which is perhaps fitting for a Grenache. Very impressive. I am upping the score to 94 based on this multi-day performance.
Fascinating wine. I've had this open for 3 nights, had most of the bottle the first night, none the second night, and now finishing the 3rd night. No vacuum, no refrigeration or other storage. First night was bright cherry and a high degree of funk. Tonight this is all spice box and wet leaves, beef and a narrow beam of bright cherry in the mid palate and persisting on the finish. (Did I just say persisting? I sound like bloody Steinman). Long finish, btw, the flavors last a long, long time on the palate, well over a minute. Silky smooth mouth feel, good acidity, and some tannins. Top notch wine in all respects.

Drank next to an Inglenook Cab and a Proper Syrah. This was the funkiest of the bunch (as expected). All of that wet rock and meaty and band aid and other flavors. First time with a Cayuse Grenache with Mike's family and I think they quite took to it (they are already staunch fans of the Syrah). Wish we had another. Always good. Perhaps liked the '09 we had a few weeks ago more, but that might have been because this was a decant and pour and there we decanted for a few hours.

My 1st thought after tasting was "is this cut with water", funny to read the review below the next day. Delivered a great nose, but the body was waterlogged and thin. This bottle was below average. One more to try in a bit.

Drinking extremely well after 60 minutes in the decanter. Aromas of red fruit, ash, meat, and herbs filled the room. Gentle but full of flavor on the palate. Red and blue fruit, light veggies, tobacco, white pepper, flowers, salty meat, bay leaf, and earth. Usually one of my least favorites out of the Cayuse lineup but these 08 Grenaches are rocking! Drink one now if you got a few. No hurry if only one left, lots of life ahead.

Interesting wine. Decanted for two hours. The nose had hints of red fruit meat, iodine. On the palate mineral driven kirsch. Full throttle new world in style but well balanced. Stills seems young. I think this will improve.

Tasted double blind. Much more Cayuse than Grenache in style, but oh so good. At first reaction I thought it was Pinot, but then when the minerals are so extreme and the green olives come into play, then it has to be Cayuse and given the light style it had to be GOK.
Yes it is less dense than the Syrahs but that is intentional and works well with this wine.
I don't know what you guys are drinking. This wine is very simple and actually dilute. No concentration, complexity, charm or interest. There are any number of $10-15 red wines that are better than this. Just nothing here. At the price, it's a joke, and a very bad joke. The Emperor's New Clothes in a glass.
Grenache Dinner (Rabo de cordobes) (Mukilteo Washington): This had a rich, powerful and slightly funky bouquet of smoke, cherry, strawberry, plum and herb aromas. The palate was rich, ripe and complex with flavors of cherry, strawberry, plum, herb, spice and minerals. My score was 92+. Our group’s average score was 91.75 points.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of barnyard, black cherries, plums and crushed stone. Flavors of berries, supple cherries and plums. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink with just a little air or continue to hold. No major rush here.

Could not decide how much I liked this. Drank along side a Wind Gap Ràna Grenache blend. This was darker and more burly. Maybe something was wrong. A little fizzy. Boy was she funky. The uninitiated were turned off. Mushroom, olive, raspberry. Decant the next one if I drink it soon.

Cayuse Dinner @ Firenze Osteria, Toluca Lake, CA - 3/15/2014
Not the WOTN but absolutely the FOTN (funk of the night). Smelled like hot stinky feet, but the flavors were incredible. The only Cayuse Grenache of the dinner, but served alongside a No Girls Grenache and big brother was the winner of the two.

Notes from Day 2. Dark purple to dark red. Nose of black raspberry, black olives, ash, funk, faint cabbage with extended air. Palate of black raspberry, lots of cherry, ash, funk, olive brine, campfire. The finish was long in length, nice mouth feel, and good acidity. Overall the wine was fantastic, will get better with more age, but no shame in checking in on a bottle now. Hold or Drink: 50+5+13+18+8

Consumed @ Ceretta @ Sand Pearl. While the meal was average & the service shocking, the wine was super. I double decanted it prior to leaving for the restaurant, roughly three hours before the meal, knitting it together so wonderfully. Intensely 'Grenache-y,' it is evocative of the warm weather, classic, pure Chat-Pape Grenaches. I am so lucky to be deep into the mailing list of Cayuse (12 to 15 bottles a year), yet I parcel out my girlfriend's & my enjoyment of them b/c every time we pop a bottle, it is such a treat!

Stand-in for a corked '04 Roumier Chambolle Musigny
Color: light, transparent ruby -> diffuse, light ruby rim; looks like Burgundy. Okay, here's where it gets really fun: looks like Burgundy but smells like the quintessential amalgamation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and grand-cru Burgundy that is, amazingly, new world! Cool Cayuse garrigue on PnP that really blossomed to near perfection at about 60-90 minutes. Beetroot, earth, strawberry, raspberry, game meat and a hint of cola. Smoooooth palate. Lip smackingly long finish; lovely acidity so, so reminiscent of great Burgundy. Beautiful wine and absolutely out of the park for Christophe in this year--have to say this has to be the best grenache I've had since the '98 Clos du Caillou Reserve a couple of years ago. Glad I opened this now--it's drinking perfectly. Killer wine for anyone looking for a primal scream mix of CDP and Pinot/Burgundy.
Okay, yep, with stand-ins like this, who needs to even try that 1st bottle?

Opened with no decant and this was singing. Bright and juicy cherries, pepper, green underbrush, strawberries, and funk. Smooth texture, balanced, and a long finish. Matched well with lamb burgers slathered in Rogue blue cheese. The best GOK since 05 for me, and this was a bit more of everything yet still light somehow. Interested to see what this will do with more age, but a bottle or two won't see much more cellar dust. This was delish!

My first cayuse and no funk! strategies rode up a great note as we discussed this at length. The iodine is really worth mentioning again as it rode the entire palate. Great complexity and fun to analyze with such knowledgeable cohorts.
Slow-O 4 hours, aerated to decanter 4 hours, returned to bottle and served 11 hours after opening. Even from the start, the expected Cayuse funk was missing, instead loads of fresh iodine, piercing raspberry, fresh seawater, beet root and faint baking spice. Intense aromas, but not oaky, alcoholic or overtly ripe in nature. Medium garnet core was lighter than I expected; the amount of lift this has is impressive. If Grenache could be Burgundian, and Grand Cru at that, this is it. Pleasantly surprised that this was so comfortably in my wheelhouse. Continued to gain depth, complexity and zeal throughout the night. A real joy to drink. I'm glad this vintage in particular was my first GOK experience. 14,2% abv, drink over the next decade. highly recommended
Stunning wine drinking so harmoniously. Capitivating nose of spice, and rocks and faint cardamom, wild game, sauvage and elegance. Tasted like what I think liquid awesomeness would taste like. Think Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma, Stevie Nicks singing Landslide, Glenn Gould's Gould Variations, Neil Young's Comes a Time Album, you get the picture. I was surprised at how this wine sang in perfect harmony, mouthfeel was silky but not overly unctious. Great fruit but some good grip too, Tannins gave structure that allowed the fruit to come alive. Man the finish was never ending. Complex, gorgeous and pretty darn complete. Time will only deepen its dimension and offer up another sublime experience. I didn't expect this to taste so good so early.

Decanted and followed over an few hours. Others notes describe the bloody meaty, dark savory notes. I'd add a strong note of black olive to the aroma profile. The palate was completely coated, with the aforementioned flavors and those from licking the walls of your Weber grill after preparing lamb, wet BBQ ribs, and ribeyes. Thick yet weightless texture. Finish was minutes.

Portland CellarTracker offline (Sauvage et Fausse Piste Winery, Portland, Oregon): The 2008 GOK pervades the nostrils with a pure rawness, game meat, menthol, eucalyptus, blood on blood and beetroot. The palate endures with rare beef, game, smoked plums and savory. This wine is not for the shy; it is hearty, dirty, wild and untamed. Lucifer in character, this weighty Grenache is generous and seductive on the arresting finish. This will only get better over the next 5-15 years. My first Cayuse; my senses were rendered transposed.
Decanted for 5 hours. Nose evolved over the first 3 hours. Vegetal, classic cayuse funk! Fruit is still there, pomegranate IMO. Coats the mouth like no other wine I've ever had. Amazing. Meaty but finish has quite a bit of fruit. Makes me want to take very small sips! Finish is very very long.

Decanted roughly 2 hours and consumed over the following 2 hours. Moderate red-garnet color with bright red hints. Initially the nose was big and funky with loads of leather, sweaty horse, raspberries, hot iron, and herbs. After about an hour though the funk subsided and things became more balanced as the fresh berry, herb, and mineral aromas became more prominent. Nicely balanced and complete on the palate too where fresh fruit and herbs dominate and the tannins and acidity support things nicely. The finish is very long - I could still taste it after two minutes. Very reminiscent of an old-school, young Chateauneuf de Pape.

This was lots of fun. Tons of dark fruit with just as much spice, a bit of funk on the nose, and perhaps even some garrigue. Maybe, just maybe, a bit disjointed yet, should improve a bit for a year or two, but no sin in drinking this now.

What a treat. I found this bottle in a wine shop on the lower east side of Manhattan, bought it immediately, walked back to my hotel, opened it, and enjoyed it over a few hours. I've had a number of Christophe's Syrah's over the last decade, but was my first Cayuse Grenache. I went into it not knowing what to expect, but it immediately made sense as a Cayuse effort. Wonderful minerality, texture and dimensionality, which all evolved as we worked through the bottle.

After-Hours (Fausse Piste Winery, Portland OR): A special treat from Jesse at Fausse Piste! Wow, this wine was amazing...smooth and silky, rich strawberry fruit, serious funk, crazy minerality. Finishing with some espresso flavors. Very light on the oak, this seemed to gain weight as it got air. Started out rather light but by the end of the glass (with much swirling) it was a beast. I like Christophe's wines more and more as I try them. Sourced from Armada Vineyard, 90% Grenache, 10% God only knows...

HdR 2012 - The Return of the Bionic Frog (Paso Robles, CA): Translucent dark garnet with a hint of tawny in the glass. Fragrant, feminine nose of cherry - rather Pinot/Burgundian. Ripe sweet soft cherry fruit, strawberry, and crushed rocks. Somewhat delicate.

Popped and poured. Medium-plus bright purple/ruby. Such a young wine on the nose and initially quite tight but showing almost reminiscent to an extremely youthful bottle of Clos du Mont-Olivet or other "classic" Chateaunuef...think herbaceous, somewhat green notes interspersed with notes of raspberry and cherry. For lack of a better comparison, the green notes are quite evocative of fresh fruit stems. A savory note of broth or stock appears as this warms in glass, along with a subtle spice note. Medium to medium-plus body. Much more elegant in profile than a Cayuse Syrah. The flavors in mouth are again more reminiscent of refrained, "traditional" CdP than most any other new world Grenache this taster has experienced and show lively, almost racy berry fruits accompanied by spice and the herbaceous. The tannins are a touch astringent on the moderate to moderate-plus close. What a young wine. Although still enjoyable, it was hard to not to feel a sense of regret in opening this now...highly recommend aging for the winery recommended 5 years or at least decanting for 1-2 days if you just can't resist popping the cork on one.

fragrant nose of flowers, cola, root beer, roasted meat, coffee, clove mouth - realtively restrained berry attack which then broadens out considerably on midpalate and the long finish featuring concentrated root beer, licorice, roasted meat, and other spiced savory flavors. quite an interesting wine, reminds me of some of the bolder extracted pinots I have had. It would interesting to see if the barrel flavors will mellow out and yield to the fruit more over the next several years. -- Addendum: just read this was raised in neutral oak puncheons! Amazing that they can get these sorts of flavors without oak. goes to show you what i know.

Cracked this one open with P Wals, DBrown and the boys after the Orange win. Nose was the typical Cayuse barnyard funk, always a highlight of any Cayuse wine. Meat, bloody meat, and bacon were the consensus tasting note for this wine. Have some more bottles left, drank this one a bit too young, will keep the remaining bottles for 3-4 more years.

Took this to a wine dinner. This showed better than I anticipated at this early stage and much more funk than at the barrel tasting. Nose was strong with funk, black and green olive, mixed raspberry, ash, and a little spice. Palate showed more ash, funk, mixed raspberry, a little cherry, olive brine, and spice. The finish was long and the wine seemed more medium bodied than I recalled, but that could of been due to the other two wines which were quite larger. Also there was good acidity present, like I said earlier a very good early showing.

Going Away Dinner @ Ripple (Ripple - Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.): Typical Cayuse funk on the nose that is lots of fun. Reminds me of Pegau...anyways, this was dark, rich and downright elegant....not the adjective I usually use with Grenache! There were dark spices, dark floral scents, and beautiful meat tones on the palate. This is truly exotic and I think it has an exciting upside!

Barrel sample. As with previous vintages, very red in color. Pretty nose of crushed wild strawberries, pomegranate, and herbs de provence. Very silky mouthfeel with light references to red cherry fruit and red raspberries. Not as much funk as the 05 and 06 and it renders this the lightest feeling of the three GOK's. Needs some time to develop. 92-94 pts.

Barrel sample at Private Release Weekend. I'm beginning to realize that I do not enjoy this wine when it is very young. This tasting had tart raspberry and strawberry flavors with some spice notes, and just a little funk. The 05 GOK has been my favorite vintage, although I did enjoy the 06 much more the last time that I tasted it. Maybe they just need time in the bottle to develop - but others sure seemed to enjoy this more than I did.

Fantastic GOK. It's all there: Bacon, iodine, smoked meat, Cayuse funk, seductive fruit. 2 hour decant and then drunk over several hours. I don't see any upside to further aging, but there's also years of life left here.

It would interesting to see if the barrel flavors will mellow out and yield to the fruit more over the next several years.

Maybe they just need time in the bottle to develop - but others sure seemed to enjoy this more than I did.

quick 2011 release note - Darker fruit than previous vintages. Dense on the palate but focused. Not the red notes of prior vintages but still has that cool ash note.
