Cork was in great shape...The wine looks brick colored. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like violet, black pepper, forest floor and tobacco. The body is medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. The wine could still has some age left in it...could go another 10 years

At Noize, with FC and AW. Slightly ferrous nose, touch of saline too, underlying dark fruit. Medium bodied, attrative black fruit on the palate, touch of iron and blood, soft/resolved tannins, quite composed, some smokey earth appearing on good length finish. Excellent, drinking well, no hurry.

Coravin fun - Haut Bailly (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Dark hued fruit resolves to blackcurrant and brambles, meaty notes, a little savoury spice, touch of tobacco leaf and cigar box, gets a little metallic note with time is joined by some dried orange peel. Juicy, fleshy, fresh, silky drying tannins rasp the mid palate, slightly dried out black fruits are joined by a little red currant, leathery, long, a little peppery note on the finish. Nice. In a good spot.

Unripe blackberry, cigar box, gravel, leather, relatively classic mature nose with muted fruit; elegant, balanced, graceful yet firm, clearly fading and little fruit remaining, but with an intact presence, refinement, and nobility

Drinking wonderfully - still fresh, but a touch to tertiary to reach for a higher score. Complex, long, elegantly styled Bordeaux. One of my favourite Bdx Chateaux.

Brownish in the glass, moderate nose. The wine itself is relatively light, perfectly in balance, with a bit of fruit and some tertiary aromes. One of us thought to discern a touch of cork. Remaining bottles should be drunk up.

Dyp rødbrun, tobakk, kirsebær blomster, forførende. Mere struktur i munn enn de Bouscaut og de Fieuzal fra 1989. Smaker kirsebær, steinfrukt, svartstein, tobakk. Laang. Utrolig bra for årgangen. (Smakt blindt) 92-93

Drank from a magnum. Dark garnet hue with maturing brownish rims. Subtle and elegant tobacco nose, along with cigar box, dried red fruits, red cherry and dried herbs. Smooth and mellow entry, exhibits red plum, dried cherry, blackcurrant, tobacco, earth and dried herbs. Long supple finish, nice and persistent with fine velvety tannins. Drinking beautifully now, mature nicely with good complexity.

Colour still quite deep and dark. Nice classic nose - curranty fruit, earthy-cedar, soft, a few tannins still poking through, medium weight and ageing very nicely. 86s were pretty brutal when young, but this has softened out and still has some fruit left.

dinner @ ann colgin's home. intially, this was decent, showing some gritty tannin but enough fruit to hold my attention, yet it had no real depth. after 30 minutes, it was gone.

"The Dinner" Featuring Six Bordeaux Luminaries (Ann Colgin's and Joe Wender's Home): Ruby color. Floral nose of black currants. Mature blackberry and cherry fruit with some charred oak, anise, and bell pepper notes. Medium bodied. Chewy tannins. Light acidity. Soft finish with some depth of fruit. Quickly fading in the glass. Drink now.

Rated this wine a 92 in March 2011 and rate it only slightly less 1 year later. Still well-balanced and good fruity flavor, perhaps just a touch lighter than last time, but drinking well with no flaws. Interestingly, Parker originally recommended that this wine be consumed by 2000.

A pleasant Graves nose does not follow through to the palate. It suffers the grittiness of the vintage. Not terrible and certainly correct. It just lacks a degree of charm.

Alcohol :: 12.5% Medium garnet core with brownish rim. A lots of funkiness at first but blew off in the glass. Earth, mushroom, leather notes emerged with sweet plum and blackberry in the core. While the wine is still alive, it is quite soft and lean on the palate. Some sweet dark fruits covered by lots of dried herbs, mushroom and some drying tannin that caused the bitterness in the medium length finish. On its way down but still pretty palatable.

Expressive alcohol nose. Eucalyptus, spice cedar, cinnamon with some sweet currants on the palate. Smooth, light weight with some considerable acidity and earthiness notes. Lacks of complexity & relative shorter than I thought for a 1986 bordeaux, which is one of the stronger and tannic vintage.

Tobacco, earth, smoke and root beer aromas open to a medium bodied, bright, cassis filled wine that is fully developed. 1986 remains the only vintage from the chateau produced exclusively from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

We have been drinking Haut Bailly since the excellent 1970 vintage and although there have been ups and downs we have found the '86 to consistently exceed our expectations. This bottle had a pleasant nose and was still full-bodied with generous amounts of fruit and good balance. No off-notes anywhere. Stood up well to filet mignon with a rich mushroom sauce. I think this wine still has some time to go.

Same tasting experience as last bottle a year ago... from 5/11/2009 - Medium body, bright perfume, red raspberry, black cherry fruit, earthy leather, lead and a hint of graphite on the finish. Lots of life and fruit left in this twenty-plus year old. Tasted from 375 ml.

beautiful elegant nose of red fruit with some sweetness and ceder. The palate is soft with a good finish. However, it lacks complexity to blow me away. Still, way better than the montrose'86 I had. I think Haut-Bailly is becoming one of my favorites.

Chateau Haut Bailly vertical 1929 to 2005 (Institute of Directors, London): First bottle - smelled tannic, medicinal, but enticingly so, but the tannins not at all rough and on the palate this was earthy and compelling - one of the most enjoyable '86s I've had. Some found it a bit bretty and so another bottle was opened
