  • 5 hour decant. Consumed with my parents, so no formal notes, I was too busy enjoying their company, conversation and sporadic reactions to this wine.

My dad was so-so (he is a structured Cab man) my mom was blown away by the nose. The note I remember most clearly was fennel. Fascinating. We philosophized and solved most pertinent societal problems and character assassinated many prominent media personalities while consuming this wine. Ah, the power of wine and hubris! We had a fabulous time.

Purposely drank this young as an experiment. Needed the decant. More importantly, needs a handful more years in the cellar. Still enjoyable, but, honestly, I love my Rhone Grenache more. I promised Mom and Dad a CdP the next time we’re together. Can’t wait to see what global issues we work out then.

  • I'm baffled by the praise for this wine. Massively extracted cola flavors and alcoholic heat. This epitomizes inelegance and imbalance. I love Grenache from the southern Rhone and Spain, but not this.

  • Love this wine!

  • 4 hour decant, doesn't drink like a 15.9 wine, it was big and soft at the same time with little heat on the finish.

  • Tasting: I see the high scores but I do not agree.
This is my seventh time with a wine from SQN and this is the lowest score to date - this wine is simply far too young. Had a 2012 some months ago, which was okey with a 24 hour decant. In other words; patience required.

  • Ski trip - Four wino familes; 2/17/2023-2/20/2023 (WISP Resort): Expressive nose displaying intense red fruit, cherry pie, Chambord, roasted meat, milk chocolate, sweet spices and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense sweet red fruit, rich and warm, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a long concentrated ripe red fruit driven finish. This is a classic SQN Grenache hence YMMV.

  • Super dark and dense for grenache (not unexpected). Really hits the mark with both savory and fruit forward notes. Still very young, but shows great promise for the next several years. A nice balance between a wine to ponder and a hedonistic wine.

  • Much like 7 months ago ( Papies 95) we had our arm twisted into trying this young beauty. Had this side by side with its brother the Syrah ( Papies 94)which was a lot tighter albeit as special as this Grenache. Just Grenache is the early blossoming of the pair and has that extra charm in its youth (and also ages less in our view) . Much like the Syrah one wonders where this ends up in 5yrs time and how much better it will get. As always a vey elevated across wine , rich wine big all elements however with a harmonious side and never losing its elegance. Impressive in a way only SQN can be. 95

  • Oh - my - god!! This performed beyond belief at a tasting last friday! Double decanted 7-8 hours in advance, this was apparently spot on! An insanely intense, rich concuction of rich, liquorous red fruit from the Grenache, dark berries, crushed berry compote, syrah-like blueberries, warm spices; cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, rich, syrah-like notes of pine roast, bacon, hung meats and then the secondary wine maker notes from oak and malo; chocolate, espresso roast, vanilla and whiffs of cream. With all of this going on, you might think that it is too much and over the top, but it isn't!! It keeps everything in check, is balanced, juicy, alcohol super well integrated. How the heck is that possible?! What a masterpiece!

  • Kleur: Diep donkerrood. Algemeen / potentieel: Dik, geconcentreerd, boterzacht, verleidelijk, verdomd lekker. Maar nu nog VEEL te jong! 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 95/100

Colour: Deep dark red. Aroma / bouquet: Sparkling expressive bouquet, an explosion of sweetish red and ripe dark fruit in combination with ripe notes such as bitter chocolate, Tia Maria (coffee liqueur), Taste / Aftertaste: Typical SQN. A somewhat limited acidity but an ultimate and creamy power. Thick juice, concentrated, brimming with buttery tannins. At this stage, this wine is food and drink at the same time. General / potential: Thick, concentrated, buttery smooth, seductive, damn tasty. But still WAY too young! 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / Bouquet: 13 + Taste / Aftertaste: 18 + General / Potential: 9 = 95/100

  • Decanted for good 6-8 hours.

A whopper on the nose, a whopper in the glass!

I knew it was a gamble popping her already at this infant stage, but master RomanS had put some noise out there about its massiveness, and I agree fully.

But frankly my other 11 bottles will remain in the cellar a few years more, it is still a bit too chunky and unstructured to be Manfred perfect yet....

  • Needs about 3-4 hours in a decanter to really open but when it does, it is full throttle :-)
An absolutely iconic wine packed with dark raspberry flavor and spices. Lovely structure but not harsh in any way.
There is a very lovely acidity that provides a great balance! Amazing wine that I simply adored!

  • First SQN. The best way I can describe it is that it's like somebody took the most luxurious berry crumble imaginable, laden with spices, and liquefied it. It's honestly amazing that you can squeeze this much flavor into wine. Surprisingly approachable for its youth but at the same time kind of hard to pair with food, at least in its current form. No idea how this will age.

  • Similar to my previous bottle; this was very smooth, flavorful, and enjoyable.

  • Saturday get-together: Similar notes to my last recent sampling. I’ll just add that this displayed a cocktail cassis element that I was hoping would blow off a little faster than it did. This took some time to get into a glide and was advertising that it truly needs time to fully come together. All that said, the purity of fruit, and the ripe, delicious presentation of flavor is certainly on the right track. As mentioned in my previous note earlier this month, it is surging with flavor, but they haven’t found a way to integrate in full harmony just yet (to no surprise; it’s a 2019 SQN!). I’ll wait another 7+ years for the more savory and meatier notes to emerge. Right now, it’s kinda brawny and slightly angular on the finish. I like the wildness of the red berry fruit, but I’m gonna hold off for the dance party to settle down a bit… I am getting older these days, ya know…

  • New friends, new wines in Novato: First time trying a SQN. For my palate, this was probably the best Grenache based wine I have ever had but given my lack of experience with this varietal, I will not score this wine. I hope to get more experience with SQN.

  • An evening with good food, great people and amazing wine (Where the silence is longed for): Soft red and blue fruits on the nose with a fun and flamboyant extravagance to it. Same on the palate, with red ripe fruit, clean oak, a touch of earth and dark minerals. Decant or give this more time in cellar.

This is gonna make NO sense, but this Grenache and the Andremily I had before seem to have this touch of neon glow to it - think Tron and/or Blade Runner. Maybe it's just me.

  • Party with some 100 pointers: A bit less gushing than the Profuga and a bit more muted on the finish (gently clipped by some unresolved wood and acid – which I personally don’t mind for the purpose of cradling the ripe and somewhat candied red and red/black berry fruit), the Distenta Grenache gives a solid performance. It has a nice bite of power without overwhelming the sense in any way. Even slightly chewy, the mid-palate surges with black raspberry, wild red cherry, and spice. There is a saturating and almost creamy effect that unfolds on the back end, but then on the final tail it ends up finishing with a ramp-up of grip and frame.

Once the Distenta integrates, I suspect this will be a little more graceful than the meatier Profuga. There is a bit less Zoomba here and instead more cerebral elegance, eventually with some cellar time. Hold for another 6-7 years.

  • It’s good but I need to lay off these for a couple years, it’s no anywhere close to its peak.

  • Matt's review nails it. The candy-berry is outstanding and the viscosity has a a greater magnitude than the previous vintage. Beautiful pairing with barbequed meats and vegetables. A wine that enhances the flavor of grilled vegetables esp. carrots along with the rose like no other.

  • An excellence as expected by SQN . Big wine of course, proper muscle here but also with a balance and a proper elegance just elevated across like SQN delivers. We actually argued that SQN Grenache is superb this young ( unlike Syrah) and actually a wine to open when it’s youthful and primary as the nose is properly intoxicating and the balance will suffer once the freshness of Grenache goes while the secondary side will add little. But who knows. A medication wine for sure . 95-96

  • Unbelievably smooth with soft tannins, a long finish, and red fruits, we had this as a pop and pour, and it didn’t stay around long enough to find out what some more time in the glass or the bottle might do. I had waited 9 years to get on the list for these wines, and it appears to have been well worth the wait!

  • Opened for my wife’s bday, really good as per the previous bottles. Drinking well right now with a short decant.

  • Decanted for five hours. With focus and tension, this unfolds wonderfully displaying stunning fruit. Composed, yet decadent, yet fresh. Dark raspberries, Dr. Pepper, blackberries, pipe tobacco, smoky river rock, chicory and garrigue. Exceptionally long, there’s feathery tannins that remain. A true joy and a soulful persona. Although this is beyond enjoyable today, the ability to age is quite evident. Almost transparent, but the colour is close to opaque with a ruby rim. Dense and light at the same time. Drink 2025 - 2037.

  • Tasting of 2019 Sine Qua Non Distenta 1 - both Grenache and Syrah.
These are the real deal! Oh boy. Very similar in quality, I felt my heart was eventually gravitating towards the Syrah. Double decanted at 3pm, my friend and I started tasting them at around 8pm. They benefitted from even more air after this. Initially, when also quite cool in temp, I felt the luxurious caressing of the Grenache gave it the notch over the Syrah, but already on the second glass the Syrah took it up a level and the tannins and acidity melted away in ultimate Cali-Syrah goodness. I’m in love! Probably around 97P-ish on both on the day, with further upside and a huge ageing potential. Maybe I should give an additional point for my emotional connection with these and my personal taste, I just love these wines. There’s not much to improve already at this stage.
Conservatively, I guess 10-15+ years on the Grenache and easily 15-20+ on the Syrah for ageing potential with probable upside all the way

  • First bottle tried from this shipment. After reading CT comments that the Grenache was drinking better than the Syrah, I grabbed it and took it to a restaurant. It was poured into and served from a decanter. No formal notes other than general impressions: This is a really nice wine. Great bouquet, and good fruit on the palate. I usually age these for a few years, but this is drinking really well right now. Happy I opened this one.

  • Surprisingly read to go as a PnP, but rounded out more after 3 hours in bottle. Intense black and blue fruits, violets, anise, nutmeg, cocoa, milk chocolate, pure velvet and perfect balance. Great as usual.

  • Decanted for 3 plus hours. Initially it was very sharp and alcoholic with tannins that grip to your teeth. Time open helped curb this and really continued to soften and ripen as the hours went by. Dark cherry, raspberry, anise, vanilla extract, black pepper and herbaceousness (that becomes less dominate with time open). Young but nice balance. Uniquely not like anything out there as always. Potential for a better score in several years. Favorite vintage of this bottling along with Gorgeous Victim.
